I just read two Yahoo! articles that are too good for me not to share here. I think there is something that we all can learn from here. Please take time out to read them. Below are the links….
Dementia is a scary disease. It breaks the heart of a love one and may even break families.
I have a friend whose mother had dementia. At first, it manifested as a slight change in attitude, the person gets moodier, little by little she started forgetting where she put things. She lost their cordless phone at home, only to find out later that she had put it inside the freezer. Then, she almost burned their house, because she was cooking dinner, went upstairs and forgot that she was cooking. One time, she forgot the name of her husband and soon she forgot how to open a door. They were told that she has an early onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
According to my friend, the worst part of the disease is not that they have to take care of her. It’s not even the change in attitude, she being moody, although it was really bad and really painful its still not the worst. The worst is when his mother started forgetting about them, forgetting about herself, forgetting about life.
It was so bad, that my friend’s father who is unable to cope with the pain, started looking for the caring, loving, thoughtful wife she had elsewhere. He started having affairs in the hope that he’ll find his wife again. The sister of my friend so hated this that to this day, she still doesn’t talk to her father.
My friend’s mom had since passed away, but the pain still lingers. Dementia, Alzheimer’s, whatever you call it, its a scary cruel disease that brings pain.
I will not attempt to talk about the nature of the disease in detail, there are a lot of websites that can do that better. But I want to write about it because I saw how it affected my friend’s family.
Also want to share with you how you can cut the risk of dementia. Yahoo! had an article about it. Please read through it by clicking here.
