“The Diamond of Perfect Wisdom Sutra” is One of the Holiest and Powerful Sutra Amulet That You Can Keep: A Special Recite – A – Sutra Article.

In the preceding post I talked about how a sutra is also used an amulet. This can be a traditional sutra or a miniature sutra. Each of these sutras will definitely be a protective amulet, but more than that they also have different peripheral blessings that they bestow to anyone who has them.

These are just one copy each of the very limited copies sent to me by my Guru Lama of the THE SUTRA OF THE PAST VOWS OF THE KSITIGARBHA BODHISATTVA, THE DIAMOND OF PERFECT WISDOM SUTRA and THE MEDICINE BUDDHA SUTRA. Sutras are also used as very powerful amulets, that is why you will often old Buddhist Chinese houses has a copy of the Sutra on their altar though they might not be reciting the sutra itself.

All sutras offers some blessings when one read it, but when use as a sutra some are more powerful than others, only because the Buddha himself has made it as such. Don’t get me wrong all are powerful but the Buddha himself has indirectly assigned specific additional blessings in some of these sutras. These additional blessings are mentioned in the actual teachings of the Buddha as stated in the sutra itself.

Some of these sutras that are considered really powerful are THE DIAMOND OF PERFECT WISDOM SUTRA, THE MEDICINE BUDDHA SUTRA, THE GOLDEN LIGHT SUTRA and THE SUTRA OF THE PAST VOWS OF EARTH STORE (KSITIGARBHA) BODHISATTVA.

As I said one of the most powerful sutra is “THE DIAMOND OF PERFECT WISDOM SUTRA”, (also called “The Vajra Cutter Perfection of Wisdom Sutra” or “The Vajra Sutra” or “The Vajra Cutter Sutra” or “The Diamond Sutra). According to the Buddha, as stated in the said sutra when one recites and comprehends the said sutra one’s merits or blessings will exceed that of person who fills a trichiliocosm with the seven jewels and gives them away in charity. It will be difficult for me to explain a trichiliocosm but that should be tremendous amount of merits.

Paragraph 11: “Subhuti, what do you think? If a person fills a trichiliocosm with the seven jewels and gives them away in charity, wouldn’t the merit attained by this person be great?” Subhuti said, “Extremely great, World Honored One. Why? The nature of merit is empty; therefore the Tathagata says that this merit is great.” The Buddha said: “But if a person comprehends and follows even a four-line verse of this sutra, and teaches it to others, this person’s merit would exceed that of the former example. Why? Subhuti, all buddhas and all of their teachings on unsurpassed complete enlightenment originate from this sutra.

Paragraph 19: “Subhuti, what do you think? If there were as many Ganges Rivers as the grains of sand in the Ganges, wouldn’t the amount of sand contained in all those Ganges Rivers be great?” Subhuti said, “Extremely great, World Honored One. If even the number of the Ganges Rivers is innumerable, how much more so their grains of sand?” “Subhuti, now I tell you truthfully: If a good man or good woman fills as many trichiliocosms as the grains of sand in all those Ganges Rivers with the seven jewels, and gives them away in charity, wouldn’t this merit be great?” “Extremely great, World Honored One.” The Buddha said to Subhuti: “If a good man or good woman is able to comprehend and follow a four-line verse of this sutra and teach it to others, their merit will be far greater.”

You might be wondering what has merits to do with protection and blessings. A merit is another term for good karma, so simply reciting and understanding THE DIAMOND SUTRA creates unbelievable merits for us.

Allow me to share a short story about somebody who has greatly benefited from THE DIAMOND SUTRA as shared by my Guru Lama. This is the story of an illiterate Tibetan who was born in exile in India. Kunchen is the second son of a family who left Tibet for India at that time China was attempting to assassinate the Dalai Lama. His family supposedly left Tibet 2 years after the Dalai Lama left.

I won’t go into details how difficult it is for Tibetans to live in a country whose climate is totally different from them, or at least, where they were assigned by the Indian Government, which is in Dharamsala. Kunchen’s older brother, who was born in Tibet, was put in a monastery so that he can become a monk, something that is quite a common practice amongst Tibetan Buddhists.

Kunchen became the eldest, and all he remembers that his father has to go to a different place to work, so it was left to his mom and Kunchen to run the house. Kunchen has 2 more younger siblings. Kunchen had a difficult life and so when he reached 18 he decided to leave his family and took his to get work in other parts of India.

Kunchen, found himself working from one employer to another. He seems to be a skilled worker and can easily learn new things, however, it seems his biggest problem that he seems to have a deep-seated anger that he was born poor and somehow without any particular reasons he has detested all his employers.

Soon Kunchen got married and had sons and daughters of his own. He and wife both had to work to make ends meet, and still Kunchen can’t hold a job for more than three years. Although he still considered himself as Buddhist, most Tibetans are and can’t see themselves otherwise, he has never practiced his faith.

Kunchen seems to unable stop problems from arising also. His eldest son had an accident and became bedridden, and then her daughter was sexually molested by an Indian neighbor and she became a mother at 15 years of age. On top of that, money seems to be always a problem, and while Kunchen has always been drinking liquor, these two incidents made him more dependent in alcohol.

It was at this time that Kunchen’s wife tried to look for her mother – in – law whom she has never met. You have to understand the mentality of the Tibetan women or wives, once they got married if they have a problem they normally will seek out the parents of their husbands and not their own mothers. And this is what Kunchen’s wife deed. It took a long time for her to track down her in – laws because Kunchen has stopped communicating with them.

When Kunchen’s mom got the letter she immediately decided to go and pay visit Kunchen a visit. One of her grandsons went with her, but at that time Kunchen’s father had already passed away.

After the initial emotions of seeing each other for a long time, Kunchen’s mother encouraged them to go home with her. She is still in Dharamsala but their life is so much better now, but maybe out of shame for abandoning his family, Kunchen wouldn’t hear of any of it. Because she cannot do anything for them other than to give them some monetary help, she talked to the wife of Kunchen and confirmed that they are still basically Buddhist. She then left with them a book, a traditional sutra, and told them to place it on their altar. The daughter then claimed that both she and Kunchen are unable to read. The mother then informed her that it doesn’t matter and to just put the book on their altar. That book, Kunchen and her wife alter found out is a copy in a traditional sutra form of THE DIAMOND OF PERFECT WISDOM SUTRA.

This is a copy of the big and small THE DIAMOND OF PERFECT WISDOM SUTRA (traditional sutra amulet and sutra amulet) that my Guru Lama sent me. They are quite limited. I only have 10 of the big ones, and 7 of the small ones.

According to my Guru Lama, Kunchen claimed that as soon as he received the traditional sutra, things started to get better. Now, at the age of more than 60, and even he still can’t read, Kunchen and his wife owns several businesses. His grandson from her daughter who bore the child at 15 was the one who helped them run their business. Kunchen made sure all his grandchildren are able to go to school, and they help him with reading the documents but Kunchen and his wife makes the decisions. Of course, now that his grandchildren are older they get to make decisions also.

Kunchen swears that it was THE DIAMOND OF PERFECT WISDOM SUTRA left in the house by his mother who started all the good luck. In fact, Kunchen claims that the atmosphere seems altogether became different. Is this feeling psychological?

I think not, because THE DIAMOND SUTRA itself stated that wherever the sutra is, it is as if the Buddha and Buddha’s revered disciples were also present. And who are the Buddha’s revered disciples, they are the Bodhisattvas or Pratyekabuddhas! This means the place itself becomes holy. In fact, if one recites the sutra, that place should be venerated as a Buddha – shrine. That’s how powerful THE DIAMOND SUTRA is. And remember Kunchen nor his wife could have not read this because they are both illiterate.

Paragraph 20: “Furthermore, Subhuti, wherever one teaches or recites so much as a four-line verse of this sutra, that place should be venerated as a Buddha-shrine by heavenly beings, human beings, and asuras in this world. How much more so is the case where one can completely remember, comprehend, and follow this sutra! Subhuti, you should know that such a person has achieved the highest, rarest of accomplishments. Wherever this sutra is present, it is as if the Buddha and the Buddha’s revered disciples were also present.”

This is indeed one of the most powerful sutra and simply having this will definitely shower upon the holder/owner not only great protection but also wonderful blessings of wealth, health, harmony, and peace.

Paragraph 29: “Subhuti, if a good man or good woman renounces their life for charity in the morning as many times as there are grains of sand in the Ganges, and does likewise at noon and in the evening, continuing thus for immeasurable hundreds of thousands of millions of kalpas; and if someone else hears this teaching and gives rise to unwavering faith, the merit of the latter would far exceed that of the former. How much more the merits of those who transcribe, recite, remember, follow, and explain this sutra to others!

In fact, if you have this sutra, the Buddha has instructed that heavenly beings and asuras, aside from human being should come and make offerings. That shows how holy and powerful and important this sutra is. That is also the reason why it should be put on the altar or on a high clean dry place. It should never be put on the floor, or chair, or bed, or dining table.

Paragraph 30 Sentence 5: Subhuti, wherever this sutra is present, all the heavenly and human beings and asuras in all the worlds should come and make offerings. You should know that its presence is equivalent to a pagoda that all should venerate and pay homage to, by circumambulating or scattering flowers and incense around its grounds.”

Paragraph 43: “Subhuti, if a person accumulates the seven jewels into mounds equivalent to all Mt. Sumerus in the worlds of a trichiliocosm and gives them away in charity, and another person recites, remembers, followed, and teaches this prajna paramita sutra or even a four-line verse of this sutra to others, the merit of the former would not be a hundredth, or even a billionth, of that of the latter. In fact, the merit of the latter would be so great that no comparison, by calculation or by analogy, could possibly be made.”

Recite A Sutra (1): Create Harmony and Peace Thru The Powerful Sutra Called “The Heart of Prajna Paramita Sutra”!

In my preceding post, I talked about the importance and the amazing benefit of reciting a sutra. Regular readers of this blog, already knows that chanting a mantra is a powerful way of tapping into the power of a Buddha or Bodhisattva, but as mentioned in the post – INVITE WONDERFUL BLESSINGS IN YOUR LIFE BY RECITING A SUTRA – reciting a sutra brings in even more wonderful blessings.

When I say reciting a sutra, it means that you will have to read it aloud. If you can memorize the sutra then recite it from memory, then the blessings are multiplied hundred times. In the succeeding posts, I will share with you the different sutras that I personally recite, some everyday and some once a week. Some are quite short and some are really long.

Today, let me start off with the shortest but one of the most revered sutra in the world, and that is THE HEART OF PRAJNA PARAMITA SUTRA. It’s called THE HEART OF PRAJNA PARAMITA SUTRA because even though it is quite short it captures the essence of the PRAJNA PARAMITA sutras, which consist of several different sutras that talks about the Prajna Paramita or Perfect Wisdom.

THE HEART OF PRAJNA PARAMITA SUTRA is short but is also one of the hardest sutra to understand. It is also more often called as THE HEART SUTRA. The Tibetan Buddhists believes that THE HEART SUTRA is a sutra that was spoken by Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, but Zen Buddhists and Pure Land Buddhists believes that Shakyamuni Buddha himself spoke it. I tend to believe that it was indeed spoken by Buddha Shakyamuni.

Reciting THE HEART SUTRA will help create the blessing of harmony and peace. So people who are affected by the #3 Flying Star (also called Argumentative Star), and people who are in a hostile environment, and people who are engage in a legal case will do well to recite THE HEART SUTRA everyday, maybe even several times a day will do. Wearing the whole sutra as an amulet will also help bring about these blessings but wearing it and reciting is the most ideal situation.

Furthermore, when one totally understands THE HEART OF PRAJNA PARAMITA SUTRA, one can enter into Samadhi. This is easier said than done because even though this sutra is really short it’s quite difficult to understand it.

I personally love this sutra and believe in its power so much that I highly recommend people wear this sutra. In fact, the past 2 or 3 years I have recommended wearing the image of Kuan Yin with Heart Sutra gold pendant. Partnering this sutra with the Vajrapani Ruel also creates tremendous amount of winning edge with attracting a lot of hostile energies. Since the sutra is short, instead of a link to it, I will put it here from memory in its entirety.

Please don’t be surprised that the English translation of these sutras might slightly differ from each other. This is simply a matter of translation. But I will always share with you the English version that I use and believes is easier to understand. If you can recite it in the Tibetan language or Chinese language, which are more accurate. Sometimes, I will recite them in both Chinese and English or English and Tibetan.

 

THE HEART OF PRAJNA PARAMITA SUTRA

Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara,

While deeply immersed in prajna paramita,

Clearly perceived the empty nature of the five skandha,

And transcended all suffering.

Sariputra! Form is not different from emptiness,

Emptiness is not different from form.

Form is emptiness, emptiness is form.

So it is with feeling, conception, volition, and consciousness.

Sariputra! All dharmas are empty in character;

Neither arising nor ceasing,

Neither impure nor pure,

Neither increasing nor decreasing.

Therefore, in emptiness, there is no form;

There is no feeling, conception, volition, or consciousness;

No eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind;

No form, sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharmas;

No realm of vision, and so forth,

Up to no realm of mind – consciousness;

No ignorance or ending of ignorance, and so forth,

Up to no aging and death or ending of aging and death.

There is no suffering, no cause, no extinction, no path.

There is no wisdom and no attainment.

There is nothing to be attained.

By way of prajna paramita,

The bodhisattva’s mind is free from hindrances.

With no hindrances, there is no fear;

Freed from all distortion and delusion,

Ultimate nirvana is reached.

By way of prajna paramita,

Buddhas of the past, present, and future

Attain anuttara – samyak – sambodhi.

Therefore, prajna paramita

Is the great powerful mantra,

The great enlightening mantra,

The supreme and peerless mantra.

It can remove all suffering.

This the truth beyond all doubt.

And the prajna paramita mantra is spoken thus:

Gate Gate Paragate Parasamgate Bodhi Svaha (Soha).

Sentient Objects (2): What To Do If A Spirit or Otherwordly Entity Inhabits Your Jewelry?

jewerlyIn my preceding post called – SENTIENT OBJECTS: JEWELRIES OR OTHER OBJECTS INHABITED BY SPIRITS! I talked about Sentient Objects. Today, allow me to share with you as to what you can do if you suspect your jewelry or other things such as dolls is inhabited by a spirit or otherworldly entity.

But first allow me to explain that although more often than not it is only the hungry ghost or otherworldly entities that will inhabit or possess an object thus making it a Sentient Object, good entities are also known to do this. In Taoism, Taoist Gods or Deities that are properly blessed are all considered Sentient Objects, it is believe that once an object is blessed, a portion of the consciousness of that particular deity or god will inhabit the said image. Thus it should be treated with reverence because it is considered a Sentient Object carrying the essence or energy or a portion of the Taoist Deity or Taoist God.

In Buddhism, this is more of controversy and there are some arguments about this. All schools and lineage of Buddhism believes that simply making an image of Buddha or a Bodhisattva or a Deity makes the image holy because it will definitely carry the energy of the said Buddha, Bodhisattva, or Deity. However, some believes school and lineages believes that having the images blessed will make it holier. However, some schools and lineages like the Pure Land Buddhism (Pureland Buddhism) believes that blessing the said images will make it a Sentient Object in a sense that the said image will start to carry some energy of the Buddha, Bodhisattva or Deity. In Tibetan Buddhism this subject is a little bit unclear, but I can surmise that it is accepted concept because Tibetan Buddhist believes that a certain item consecrated under the energies of a certain Buddha or Bodhisattva or Deity should be treated like it’s the Buddha, Bodhisattva or Deity itself. Although, the claim that it becomes a sentient object is not explicit, it always said that the item, which after consecration has become an amulet, is considered as an extension of the Buddha, Bodhisattva or Deity. This is especially true with the Kalachakra and Vajrapani Ruel. With the Surangama Mantra Amulet, it is a little different because a consecrated (The term I used in writing about the Surangama Mantra Amulet is blessed, but really it should be consecrated not just blessed. I will discuss the difference in a future post.) Surangama Mantra Amulet is believed to attract Heavenly Beings that has an affinity with the wearer. But nevertheless, as mentioned the Pure Land Buddhist believes that a blessed or consecrated image becomes a Sentient Object.

Going back to the topic. Positive Sentient Objects, aside from the Taoist and Buddhist images mentioned, although possible are very rare. I would say sentient objects, with the exception of those that were consecrated on a temple, are 95% that of a hungry ghost or otherworldly entity of negative origin.

It will difficult to identify a sentient object unless you’re sensitive to these kinds of energies. However, some signs will be if you’re house is haunted and the energies are stronger at the area where you put your jewelries. You notice that some bad things, or bad emotions, or a fight happens whenever you wear a particular jewelry, especially if they are made up of diamonds, pearls, rubies, sapphires, or emeralds set in gold. But let me issue a caveat now and clarify that with the exception of pearls and diamonds, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t get these stones. You can continue to use ruby, sapphire, emerald, and gold because the benefit from wearing them far outweighs the possibility of it becoming a sentient object.

To harvest the pearl, you have to kill the oyster, an shellfish considered to have consciousness.

I said with the exception of pearls and diamonds. Why? Because most diamonds around 85% to 90% of it are blood diamond, meaning it’s a diamond mined with total suffering and hardship maybe even death of those who mined them. In the case of the pearls, pearls are animate beings. Being the are living things that has consciousness, so in effect, when you get a pearl you either kills the shellfish (oyster)or you hurt them, and carrying a pearl is technically dead animate being so the energy is yin. These two, the diamond and pearl, by virtue of it’s history carries some yin psychic impression, and while they are yang energy objects (especially the diamond) with their yin psychic impression, hungry ghosts and otherworldly entities will natural be attracted to them and may inhabit them.

Vajrapani Ruel

The Vajrapani Ruel looks simple, maybe even rustic, but this simple amulet is packed with a special talisman paper inside, with various ingredients, which includes Namtso Salt, soil, various herbs and plants, crystal, and a relic from a high lama. It’s important to put the ruel inside a amulet holder or something sturdy as to not ruin it. If the cloth had tear which exposes or spill the ingredients inside, the ruel becomes useless. The Vajrapani Ruel itself is only about 1 to 2 inches and it varies from one ruel to another.

If you suspect that your jewelries have turned into a sentient object, I suggest you bring them to a Taoist Priest or a Buddhist Monk who are familiar with exorcising these objects. Depending on how strong the energy is it might take from a month to 3 months to fully cleanse these sentient objects of the negative energy or spirit or entity.

To prevent them from becoming a sentient object you can put a powerful amulet amongst your jewelry. The Vajrapani Ruel or Surangama Mantra Amulet will do. However, if they are already possessed with spirits or entities, they really have to be cleansed by a Taoist Priest or a Buddhist Monk.

Pure Land Buddhists believes that when you wear a Surangama Mantra Amulet, heavenly beings that has an affinity with you will hover over you.

Continue wearing a jewelry that has turned into a sentient object is bad because you might imbibe (permanently) the energy and personality of the spirit or entity. Furthermore, it may bring in some bad luck in your life and worst it might affect your relationships!

USHNISHA SITATAPUTRA – A Protector Against All Danger, Better Known as The White Umbrella Goddess

Ushnisha Sitataputra, better known as the White Umbrella Goddess, is one of the female manifestations of Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. It should be noted that Ushnisha Sitataputra, although she has similar traits with Kuan Yin, is not Kuan Yin. Kuan Yin is literally Avalokitesvara as female Bodhisattva. To understand this better I suggest you read my earlier post entitled – UNDERSTANDING MERCY AND COMPASSION: THE TRANSFORMATION OF AVALOKITESVARA TO KUAN YIN.

However, Ushnisha Sitataputra is a female manifestation of Avalokitesvara, the difference is Kuan Yin has retained all the exact character traits of Avalokitesvara, while a Ushnisha Sitataputra or The While Umbrella Goddess serves a slightly different purpose.

Ushnisha Sitataputra directly translates as the ‘The Victorious Goddess of White Parasol’, and she does signify victory over all harm and danger, especially those of supernatural causes. According to Lama Zopa Rinpoche, reciting the mantra of Ushnisha Sitataputra will help illnesses, bring auspicious luck, prevent harm from happening, and drive away evil and negative energies. The Tibetan Buddhists regard Ushnisha Sitataputra or The White Umbrella Goddess as one of the most powerful deity.

The famous image of Ushnisha Sitataputra is the one where has a thousand face, thousand arms, and a thousand legs. Each of the face has three eyes, and she also has one eye in each of the palm of her hands and sole of her feet. This is to represent that she watches and protects all sentient beings. Her body as in her central faces glows in white, her right faces are yellow, her rear faces are red, and green is the color of her faces on her left. At the top of her head is another tier of blue faces. Her right hands hold the Dharma chakra, while her left hands hold arrows. She also has a white parasol on her left, which symbolizes the blessing of protection. This particular image of The White Umbrella Goddess can be likened to the Thousand-Hand Kuan Yin or Thousand Hand Avalokitesvara.

This is similar to the Thousand-Hand Kuan Yin we have at home.

Another image of Ushnisha Sitataputra or The White Umbrella Goddess is the simpler and can be likened to the White Tara.

In this subdued image of Ushnisha Sitataputra, she has 7 eyes, very much like the White Tara. Also white in color, she has one face with three eyes, two hands with one eye each on each palm, and 2 legs with one eye each on each sole. Her right hand is in the mudra of supreme generosity and also holds a Dharma chakra, while on her left she holds the famous White Parasol or White Umbrella of protection. However, in this version, the parasol is adorned with various jewel and ornaments.
