The Feng Shui of Food: Incorporate More Color on Your Diet!

One of the less talk about Feng Shui is Feng Shui of eating. It is actually one of the simplest way to enhanced your Feng Shui, albeit the effect doesn’t last really long, but doing it regularly should have at least about 5% to 10% increase in your good Feng Shui.

Feng Shui eating is simple, incorporate a lot of yang energy by putting in more color to your food. You do this by eating less meat and eating more vegetables and fruits. The key is to incorporate various yang colors. So, you don’t just eat green vegetables, but incorporate other colorful vegetables like red beans or red bell peppers, yellow bell peppers, carrots, purple lettuce or purple cabbage etc. The same goes with fruits, make it a “happy meal” of colors. And you know what, in the Feng Shui of food, it’s the sour fruit that brings in more chi. These are kiwis, lemon, or other citrus fruits.fruits and beggies

Please note that Buddhists believe that eating meat and any other sentient being like oysters, fish, shrimps, etc., is actually a mortal sin. But in Feng Shui, meat and these meats from sentient beings are considered as Yin food or food with negative energies.

Why It Is Better to Be Vegetarian or Vegan in Feng Shui?

Vegetarian-Vegan-Diet-Heart-HealthThere are several religions that advocate for vegetarianism or even going completely vegan. This is because they believe that eating other forms of sentient beings is a sin because it harms other sentient being for humans to simply be able to satisfy their taste buds and stomach.

Is there any other reason not to eat meat and become Vegan or Vegetarian?

In Feng Shui, although it is not discussed much it is actually better to become vegetarian because plants do not carry sentient chi. You see, when a sentient being like animals or fishes are slaughtered for meat, they go through a tremendous amount of negative emotions, and yes, science has proven a long time ago that animals have emotions and can feel. While it is their karma to suffer that kind of death, it doesn’t mean that we should participate with it, and the truth is we human being when we eat, it means we encourage and participate the violent death of these animals. vegan-vs-vegetarian

Those negative emotions become negative chi and are retained in their meat, and when we eat them we definitely are ingesting a lot of negative chi also.

Christians may argue that it should be okay for them. Remember that the Ten Commandments say: THOU SHALL NOT KILL. It doesn’t say thou shall not kill another human being, it simply says thou shall not kill. It’s encompassing any forms of killing.

By eating meat, we encourage more killing and this create some negative karma for us, more than that, eating the actual meat that is believed to have retained the negative chi will also make us absorbed those negative chi. Remember energy is neither created nor destroyed, but it can be transferred.vegan-pyramid-web-big

Chant – A – Mantra (3b): Daily Mantras to Chant – The 4 Main Bodhisattvas of Chinese Buddhism!

In the preceding post, I briefly talked about the importance of chanting mantras daily. Sometimes, chanting mantras takes getting used to and the more we do it, the more we get used to it, the more it is easier for us to learn new mantras. But more than that, chanting mantras should be considered like taking vitamins, we have to take it everyday for us to build resistance, and in this case resistance to negative chi. Furthermore, aside from building resistance to negative chi or negative energies, chanting mantras daily makes us more attuned to the cosmic energy of the Buddhas or Bodhisattvas whose mantra we are chanting, not to mention it makes more attuned to the cosmic energy in general.

While we won’t be able to recite the entire mantras daily, because some of them are long and there are really a lot of mantras available for us. Chanting daily mantras of selected Buddhas or Bodhisattvas will also make us, as mentioned earlier, more attuned with the cosmic energy, to the divine cosmic energy of the world of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, in such a manner that when we have to chant a specific mantra for a specific purpose, because we already have a ‘relationship’ with the divine cosmic energy, it is easier for us to be attuned to the energy of the new mantra we are chanting, even this is for only a specific purpose.

Yesterday, I shared with you the initial list of the mantras I chant daily. Namely of the 3 main Buddhas of our time and they are Amitabha Buddha, Shakyamuni Buddha (Sakyamuni Buddha) and the only celestial Buddha among the three, Medicine Buddha.

Note: Medicine Buddha is the simplified name. Medicine Buddha’s formal name is Bhaisajya – guru – vaidūrya – prabhā – raja or King of Medicine Master and Lapis Lazuli Light. His Tibetan common name is Bhaisajyaguru.

Today, allow me to share with you the other mantras that I chant everyday. They are 4 Main Buddha of Chinese Buddhism, especially for Pure Land Buddhism and Zen Buddhism.

Note: Zen Buddhism although has Japanese name actually started in China. It’s the English-speaking world that ‘popularized’ Zen Buddhism, but in reality it is called Chan Buddhism.

THE 4 MAIN BODHISATTVAS WHOSE MANTRAS I CHANT EVERYDAY ARE THE FOLLOWING:kuan Yin3 white

  1. NAMO DA PEI KWAN SHI YIN PU SA & OM MANI PADME HUM (Mantra of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Kuan Yin) – Kuan Yin (also known as Avalokitesvara, Kannon, and also spelled as Guan Yin, Kwan Yin, Gwan Yin) is more popularly known as the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Sometime people also refer to her as the Buddha of Compassion (although she is not a Buddha) or Goddess of Mercy (although she is also not a Goddess). I have written about Kuan Yin Bodhisattva many times, so I will put the link to those articles below. But it should be noted that perhaps Kuan Yin Bodhisattva is perhaps the most famous and most revered Bodhisattva in all lineage and school of Buddhism. She has become so famous that even the Taoist has adopted her as one of their Goddess.   • NAMO DA YUAN DI ZHANG WANG PU SA and OM AH KSTIGARBHA THALENG HUM and OM PRA MANI DANI SOHA (Mantra of the Bodhisattva of Great Vow, Ksitigarbha) – Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva is known to have committed to the Buddha that he will not enter Buddhahood unless he has freed all sentient beings from hell or from being a hungry ghost. This is his great vow. Chanting his mantra will help ensure that we are freed from suffering and help ensure a good rebirth.   1. NAMO DA XING PU XIAN PU SA and OM AH HUM AH A KAR SA LE OD A YANG OM DU (Mantra of the Bodhisattva of Great Conduct, Samantabhadra) – Samantabhadra Bodhisattva is a Bodhisattva known for her great conduct. She is also known as the Bodhisattva of Truth, because it is her sincerest desire the real truth be exposed does she has the famous TEN GREAT VOWS OF BODHISATTVA SAMANTABHADRA, where in each item of those vows has something to do with the permanent truth of Buddhism.

    Manjushri is a disciple of Sakyamuni Buddha. He is also a great Bodhisattva.

  1. NAMO DA ZHI WUN SHU SHI LI PU SA and OM A RA PA CHA NA DHI (Mantra of the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, Manjushri) – Manjushri Bodhisattva (also spelled as Manjushree) is a Bodhisattva known for his commitment to make all sentient beings attained the perfect wisdom or full enlightenment. He is usually depicted holding a sword and a sutra book. The sword represents the slashing of false knowledge, and the sutra book represents that we are only able to attained perfect wisdom with the help of the sutra or words of the Historical Buddha, Shakyamuni. Chanting the mantra of Bodhisattva Manjushri will help us attain wisdom and guide us in making our daily decisions.

So you see, aside from the mantras of the 3 main Buddhas of our time, I also chant the mantras of the 4 main Bodhisattvas of Chinese Buddhism. But that’s not all, in my succeeding posts, I will share with you the other mantras I chant everyday.

What to Do When One Sees A Dead Animal?

In my previous post, I talked about the story of Mahakassapa (also spelled as Mahakasyapa) and Ananda. In that particular post I talked about reincarnation, which I have talked about before, and subtly introduced a Buddhist accepted belief that I have never fully talked about here on this blog. This belief is about the accepted Buddhist teachings that all sentient beings reincarnate and has a consciousness and that we may have come from animals or insects and can be reborn as such.

In Buddhist temples, Mahakasyapa (Mahakassapa) is usually on the Buddha's left side (from our point of view - right side) and Ananda is on the Buddha's right side.

Hope to be able to talk more about it in my future blog articles. However, today I would like to talk about what one should do if one sees a dead animal. In my previous post, I mentioned that Mahakassapa prayed over the dead cat and buried the cat. The question is what we can do for the dead animal these days.

Like Mahakassapa, it would be great if we can pray over a body of a dead animal or insect by reading a sutra over it. The Medicine Buddha Sutra and/or the Past Vows of the Earth Store Bodhisattva Sutra (Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Sutra) and then bury the dead animal or insect. If this is not possible or it may take time, you can do either of the following, put a printed copy of the sutra or a mantra on top of the body of the dead animal. If you can bury it, please do.

Still if this is not possible, chant the Medicine Buddha mantra (TADYATHA OM BHEKANDZYE BHEKANDZYE MAHA BHEKANDZYE RADZA SAMUGATE SOHA), or the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Mantra (OM AH KSITIGARBHA THALENG HUM) or the Mantra of the Bodhisattva of Compassion (OM MANI PADME HUM) and the Amitabha Mantra (OM AMI DEWA HRIH or NAMO AMITOFO) as many times as you can then blow over the dead body of the animal or insect. If possible bury or cremate the body.

Some Buddhist Temples would conduct a collective prayers for all animals being slaughtered for human consumption. Compassion and respect for this animals as sentient beings is the primary reason why a lot of Buddhists are vegetarian.

Still if this is not possible and you have the Vajrapani Ruel, which is a very powerful Buddhist amulet, you can simple place the Vajrapani Ruel near the body of the dead sentient being and then chant OM VAJRAPANI HUM three times or seven times.

Doing this out of great compassion is the best reason and it will earn you some tremendous amount of good karma. Doing this because of wanting to earn some good karma merit will work as well. But it may not as big as simply doing it because of great compassion.

Mahakasyapa and Ananda: A Lesson About Karma and Great Compassion

Some people, especially those who are not Buddhist or Taoist might find this post a little extreme because of the belief or teaching about reincarnation and that we humans could be reborn as animals, or insects, or could have come from either animals or insects. Nevertheless, no matter how shocking it is, and some may even consider it ridiculously degrading, the truth is this is a widely accepted belief in Buddhism and Taoism, and thus it is important to be kind and compassionate to all sentient beings.

Today, allow me to share the story of Mahakasyapa (also spelled as Mahakassapa) and Ananda. Mahakasyapa and Ananda are just two of the Sakyamuni Buddha’s (also spelled as Shakyamuni) disciple. Mahakasyapa is an old disciple, and Ananda, who is of the royal family before he became a disciple of Buddha and a monk, is young and famous not just for his astounding memory but also for being handsome.

One day, while they were out on a walk, the Buddha instructed Ananda to ask a fruit vendor for a watermelon. Ananda, confidently walked over to the lady who sells watermelon and begged for a watermelon. Remember, during those days it is traditional for monks to beg, and lay people even vendors would be very willing to donate food or whatever they can to the monks. However, much to Ananda’s surprise, the fruit lady not only denied him a watermelon, but also she rudely drove her away.

Ananda went back to the Buddha to report what happened. The Buddha then instructed Mahakasyapa to beg for a watermelon. Both Mahakasyapa and Ananda and other members of the sangha didn’t believe that Mahakasyapa will have better luck, but even before Mahakasyapa got to the fruit lady, the fruit lady ran towards him and offered him a watermelon to quench his thirst from the hot weather.

Needless to say, all the Buddha’s disciples were surprised. Then the Buddha explained to them what happened.

In one of their previous lives, Ananda and Mahakasyapa had come across the fruit lady. However, at that time the fruit lady was a cat. The cat died on the street, and when Ananda (in his previous life) saw the dead cat, he veered away because he didn’t like the smell of the rotting flesh and also he didn’t care about the dead cat. On the other hand, Mahakasyapa (in his previous life) when he saw the dead cat, he prayed for it, and picked it up to give the cat a proper burial. Mahakasyapa with his simple act of compassion and kindness towards the dead cat earned a lot of good karma affinity with the dead cat that now happens to be the fruit lady.

That simple act of compassion that Mahakasyapa did, which didn’t even cost him single money, earned him some good karma. Needless to say, Mahakasyapa did the good act of compassion and not for wanting good merits.

Help All the Sentient Beings Suffering from the Devastating Earthquake in Nepal!

Nepal EarthquakeI’m TEMPORARILY breaking my vow to take a break for blogging for an important post. As of this writing the official number of people who died because of the earthquake has reached 5,500! And the minister of Nepal has announced that the death toll could reach 10,000! I certainly hope that he is wrong. But please let us not forget that some parts of India and Tibet were also severely affected, and because the Chinese government doesn’t are much for the people of Tibet, help will definitely be scarce and foreign aid will not be allowed to enter or if they do their movements will be severely restricted.

They need our help now. You can send financial supports through the different agencies, but I think UN or Red Cross are the more active ones.

Anybody who requests for the Four Dharmakaya Relic Mantras amulets from today to the end of the year, will instead be donating the money to Nepal or Tibet instead of the food for the monks. Also, the full amount for the remaining Vajrapani Ruel will likewise all go to helping the people of Tibet.

But equally important are our prayers. Technically any mantras dedicated to all SENTIENT BEINGS in Nepal will help, but my Guru Lama has requested the following mantras to be chanted for them:

TADYATHA OM BHEKANDZYE BHEKANDZYE MAHA BHEKANDZYE RADZA SAMUGATE SOHA

OM AH KSITIGARBHA THALENG HUM

OM MANI PADME HUM

OM AMI DEWA HRIH

Please say as many as you can or at least 108 of each. Please note to dedicate the merits of the chanting of the mantras to all SENTIENT BEINGS! This means it includes the dogs, cats, and other living beings that are affected by the killer quake.

One can also read or chant the MEDICINE BUDDHA SUTRA and the EARTH STORE BODHISATTVA (KSITIGARBHA BODHISATTVA) SUTRA and likewise dedicate all the merits to all the SENTIENT BEINGS OF NEPAL, TIBET AND INDIA WHO WERE AFFECTED BY THE KILLER EARTHQUAKE!

Basic Buddhism 2: The Three Jewels – Buddha, Dharma, Sangha

three jewelsThe word buddha means ‘The Awakened One’, this refers to being awakened to the ultimate reality, to the true nature of the mind; being one who understands the world and all sentient beings without delusion, one who is perfect in wisdom and compassion. The Buddha is also sometimes called as the ‘Thus Come One’ or Tathagata, or the ‘World – Honored One’ or Bhagavat.

The Buddha is a historical being, and enjoys more evidence and historical facts than Jesus Christ that he actually existed. He is a Indian prince whose given name is Siddhartha. I will try to write more about Buddha extensively in future posts, but allow me to share briefly some of the highlights of his life now.

After years of diligent practice, Siddhartha, sitting under a Bodhi tree reach supreme enlightenment. Please note that the Bodhi tree was not called Bodhi tree then, it came after. When Siddhartha reached enlightenment, it is said that his very first words are, “Wonder of wonders! All sentient beings are inherently complete and perfect! But they do not realize it because of their delusions and cravings.”

When he reached enlightenment, he became known as Sakyamuni or Gautama Buddha. Gautama is from his name Siddharta Gautama, he then also embarked on an endless but untiring journey to teach living beings how to see the reality, how to gain true wisdom, and how to free themselves and attain true peace and joy.

Sakyamuni Buddha’s teachings are called Dharma.

Sakyamuni Buddha also gained several followers who renounced their home life to devote their lives to the practice of  Dharma, and to teach other sentient beings. They formed the ordained community of Buddhist monks and nuns and is called as the Sangha.

Sangha means ‘harmony’ or ‘harmonious assembly’. They are responsible for preserving and propagating the Dharma.

Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha are collectively called as the Three Jewels, because they are considered as the true treasures of the World.
