Bodhisattva Wishfulling and Master Protection Amulet Pendant (2): Getting Reacquainted with Bodhisattva Guan Yin!

Published Nobyembre 9, 2018 by jptan2012

Kuan YinKuan Yin, also spelled as Quan Yin or Guan Yin, is a Bodhisattva of Compassion. A lot of people refer to her as the Buddha of Compassion, which is technically wrong in terms of terminology, but absolutely right when refers to her true being.

The truth is Quan Yin or Kuan Yin is a Bodhisattva who refuses to enter Buddhahood because of her desire to help all sentient beings to achieve nirvana or the Buddhist equivalent of heaven.

Kuan Yin (also spelled as Quan Yin, Kwan Yin, Guan Yin, Gwan Yin) is  of mercy and compassion. It is said, that her compassion towards sentient beings exceeds that of all the other Bodhisattvas combined. She is considered to be a source of unconditional love and a savior of sentient beings. When talking about Kuan Yin’s love for us, mankind is usually not used, because it is said that it is an underestimation of her compassion. Sentient beings is generally use because this also refers to other beings, other than just us humans, it refers to all living creatures that includes insects.

As a Bodhisattva, Kuan Yin pledges to response to all the cries and please of all beings, in fact, it is aid that even before you utter your plea, Kuan Yin would already have heard you and responded to your plea. Naturally, devotion to her will help hasten this, but you need not believe in her for her to reply to your pleas. The sutras that talked about Kuan Yin as a savior of both the spiritual and physical realm and when a person with deep negative karma call upon her, she will have cleanse and help this person from his karmic burden.

I don’t think that it’s an exaggeration to say that Kuan Yin’s popularity amongst Chinese Buddhist exceeds that of other Buddha and Bodhisattva. She is extremely popular and revered that Taoism has also ‘adopted’ her thus making her one of the most revered Taoist deities. It is not surprising to see Taoist temples having her image.

She is also extremely popular as being a merciful deity that some people wrongly address her as Goddess of Mercy.

There are a lot of miracles that are attributed to Kuan Yin. These miracles may range from the simple things like wanting to get a job, wanting to have a child to something really big and may seem like impossible.

My personal treasure trove of stories about Kuan Yin’s blessings and/or miracles is simply amazing. Not to mention stories shared with me by my friends, relatives, and acquaintances. You simply have to search the net and you’ll see a lot of stories about Kuan Yin’s miracles.

I’m not going to share a personal story because that will be a little self-serving. Instead, let me share with you a story of a woman who goes to the same temple that I go to. Let’s just call her A. A is a 40 something housewife. She said that she’s a devotee of Kuan Yin just like her mother. In fact, I’ll often see her make some offerings to Kuan Yin even if there’s no occasion such as the Kuan Yin feast day. I talked to her about her devotion to Kuan Yin and she clarified that while there are other small miracles that she can attribute to Kuan Yin, she believes that 2 of the important thing that happened in her life is due to Kuan Yin’s blessing. The first one is when she had her first child. It was a difficult pregnancy not only because it was her first child, but it was also a complicated pregnancy that almost got aborted several times. The worst part of the pregnancy happened on the 7th month. She had a severe case of bleeding that they thought she’d go into premature labor. On the way to the hospital, while her husband is driving, she and her mom just kept on calling Kuan Yin’s name while they mentally pray that Kuan Yin save her baby.kuan yin 4b

She was stabilized at the hospital but they can’t say the same were true for her baby. They are unable to detect the heartbeat of the baby and the ultrasound shows that the baby isn’t moving at all! After a while, the OB informed them that if another 15 minutes passed by with a heartbeat and/or a movement they would have to operate on her. By this time, she was almost hysterical, out of desperation; her mom took of her Kuan Yin pendant and gave it to A. A didn’t wear pendant but she ‘hold on’ to Kuan Yin, about 5 minutes after she ‘hold on’ to the pendant, the doctor got an heartbeat from the baby and the ultrasound also showed some movements! The baby who is now an 11-year-old boy is an honor student in Xavier.

Another story that she shared with me is about her husband. A’s husband owns a restaurant and there are times that her husband will have to stay out late to check on the operations of the restaurant. One night, when he was about get on the car, he suddenly had a very strong urge to go back and check on the Kuan Yin altar that A insisted be installed in his office. He just had this nagging feeling that he left something inside, it almost feels like he was being called to go back in by an unseen ‘force’. He thought to himself he might have left incense lighted, which might cause some fire. So he decided to go back in the restaurant. As soon as he stepped inside the restaurant he heard a very loud crashing noise, so loud, that some of the diners ducked down!

When A’s husband looked as to what happened, he saw that a large truck and another car crushed his own car! What happened was a drunk truck driver lost control of his truck, hit a car, which also hit A’s husband’s car. The whole driver side of A’s car was flattened! If he were in the car he would have died already or seriously injured. A said that when she saw the car she cried because she knew that if her husband was in the car he would have died already.

After the incident, that’s when A’s husband realized that he didn’t even light an incense, because he was really not in the habit of lighting an incense in the evening. It is simply not safe.

According to A both she and her husband believes that he was ‘called’ by Kuan Yin so that he wouldn’t have to be in the car when the accident happened.

A and her family always wears the image of Kuan Yin as pendant. This is just two stories from a single person; however, there are a lot more Kuan Yin miracle stories that can be shared.

Kuan Yin1

People who have read my earlier posts knows of my devotion to the ‘Great Sage, Equal of Heaven’ the Monkey God or Monkey King called Sun Wukong. Sun Wukong is a Taoist celestial being who became really wild whom the Buddha pacified. However, it was really Kuan Yin who paved the way for Sun Wukong to be a Buddha. She did this out of her extreme compassion for Sun Wukong who at that time was already condemned for an eternal imprisonment. Kuan Yin did this not just for Sun Wukong but also for other immortals. Westerners largely look at this story as some sort of fantasy, but to Taoist and Chinese Buddhist they have high regard for the said story and believe it actually happened in the celestial world. However, the point here is not whether the story is true or not, but it hopes to illustrate the depth of Kuan Yin’s mercy and compassion that she was able to subdue one of the most powerful Taoist Immortal/Deity. It should be noted that it was implied in the story mentioned above that should Kuan Yin had to ‘fight’ with Sun Wukong, her power would not have match that of Sun Wukong. However, her real power is not with her strength as a Bodhisattva, although, I must clarify, she is very powerful, but more than her physical and celestial strength, is the power of her mercy and compassion that is said to be infinite!kuan-yin21

However, Kuan Yin or Kuan Shi Yin (Guan Shi Yin) which means ‘The One Who Hears the Cries of the World” has a very unique transformation. Kuan Yin is Avalokitesvara in India and Cherezig in Tibet. Nevertheless, Kuan Yin is the female transformation of the said Bodhisattva. I need not talk about who Avalokitesvara in detail now because Kuan Yin is Avalokitesvara (also spelled as Avalokiteshvara), Avalokitesvara is Chenrezig, Chenrezig is Kuan Yin, they may have different names, and in the case of Kuan Yin she may have a different image but they’re one and the same. All the attributes of Kuan Yin are that of Avalokitesvara and Chenrezig, all the attributes of Avalokitesvara and Chenrezig is that of Kuan Yin!

Nevertheless, allow me to state that Kuan Yin in the form of Avalokitesvara first started in India, the land where Buddhism really started. He/She is a Bodhisattva, which is traditionally considered a little less important compared to the Buddhas. However, Avalokitesvara gained reverence equal to that of Buddhas and to some extent, specially amongst Chinese Buddhist, exceeds that of the Buddhas because as the Historical Buddha Sakyamuni himself shared through various sutras, Avalokitesvara should have been a Buddha already, however, he refused Buddhahood and wished to remain a Bodhisattva for the welfare of all sentient beings.

The transformation of Avalokitesvara to Kuan Yin is in itself a very interesting story. There are various stories about how Avalokitesvara became Kuan Yin.Kuan Yin2

One story is that in relation to Tripitaka Monk Xuan Zang who traveled to India to get some Buddhist texts that he can share with his countrymen. When he wrote about his journey he always refers to the Bodhisattva of Compassion as a female Kuan Yin, some people believes that this is one of the first time that Avalokitesvara is addressed as Kuan Shi Yin, which later was shortened into Kuan Yin. In his account of the manifestations of Kuan Yin she always appear as a miraculous being and always under miraculous circumstances.

Another story is that of Princess Miao Shan. I’ll skip the story at the moment, and I’ll share her story as written in Wikipedia at the bottom of this post.

Still, another story about Avalokitesvara’s transformation to Kuan Yin is quite simple and not as popular because it lacks the theatrical and flair of the other stories.

When Buddhism was first introduced to China, the religion is largely Taoism, which has Immortals or Deities that are very powerful and ‘masculine’. The compassionate deities and immortals are mostly female deities. Because of this the Chinese had difficulty in fully comprehending the attributes of Avalokitesvara.

Buddhist monks prayed to Kuan Yin to ask for her guidance. Some text says that Kuan Yin spoke to some Buddhist monks through their dreams and instructed them to introduce him as Kuan Yin with a female form. Other text states that they were able to divine this through an Avalokitesvara/Kuan Yin oracle. Whether it was through a dream or through an oracle, it was clear that the Buddhist monks who brought Buddhism to China started the female manifestation of Avalokitesvara. As we know this image became popularly known as Kuan Yin.

This raises the question as to why when experiencing Avalokitesvara’s miracle or vision, people see her as Kuan Yin. According to the explanation of a Chinese Buddhist monk, this is because Avalokitesvara will always appear in the form that people will understand or easily relate to.

I personally believe that the last story is the real reason why Avalokitesvara became Kuan Yin. It is because they need to put an image of mercy and compassion, and because of this Avalokitesvara transformed into Kuan Yin.

Avalokitesvara as Kuan Yin became so popular that even Tibetan Buddhist who is extremely familiar with Avalokitesvara, as a male Bodhisattva would still mention Kuan Yin. In fact, the biggest image of Avalokitesvara in the world is that of Kuan Yin which is found China.

This also answers why some images of Kuan Yin depicts her as a flat-chested handsome young prince.

kuanyin1

One of the semi-masculine form of Kuan Yin.

If you’re interested to know about the Legend of Princess Miao Shan please read on the following that was lifted from Wikipedia.

Another story from the Precious Scroll of Fragrant Mountain describes an incarnation of Guanyin as the daughter of a cruel king who wanted her to marry a wealthy but uncaring man. The story is usually ascribed to the research of the Buddhist monk Chiang Chih-ch’i during the 11th century CE. The story is likely to have a Taoist origin. Chiang Chih-ch’i, when he penned the work, believed that the Guanyin we know today was actually a Buddhist princess called Miaoshan (妙善), who had a religious following on Fragrant Mountain. Despite this there are many variants of the story in Chinese mythology.

According to the story, after the king asked his daughter Miao Shan to marry the wealthy man, she told him that she would obey his command, so long as the marriage eased three misfortunes.

The king asked his daughter what were the three misfortunes that the marriage should ease. Miaoshan explained that the first misfortune the marriage should ease was the suffering people endure as they age. The second misfortune it should ease was the suffering people endure when they fall ill. The third misfortune it should ease was the suffering caused by death. If the marriage could not ease any of the above, then she would rather retire to a life of religion forever.

When her father asked who could ease all the above, Miao Shan pointed out that a doctor was able to do all of these.

Her father grew angry as he wanted her to marry a person of power and wealth, not a healer. He forced her into hard labor and reduced her food and drink but this did not cause her to yield.

Every day she begged to be able to enter a temple and become a nun instead of marrying. Her father eventually allowed her to work in the temple, but asked the monks to give her the toughest chores in order to discourage her. The monks forced Miao Shan to work all day and all night, while others slept, in order to finish her work. However, she was such a good person that the animals living around the temple began to help her with her chores. Her father, seeing this, became so frustrated that he attempted to burn down the temple. Miao Shan put out the fire with her bare hands and suffered no burns. Now struck with fear, her father ordered her to be put to death.

In one version of this legend, when Guanyin was executed, a supernatural tiger took her to one of the more hell-like realms of the dead. However, instead of being punished by demons like the other inmates, Guanyin played music, and flowers blossomed around her. This completely surprised the head demon. The story says that Guanyin, by merely being in that hell, turned it into a paradise.

A variant of the legend says that Miao Shan allowed herself to die at the hand of the executioner. According to this legend, as the executioner tried to carry out her father’s orders, his axe shattered into a thousand pieces. He then tried a sword which likewise shattered. He tried to shoot Miao Shan down with arrows but they all veered off.

Finally in desperation he used his hands. Miao Shan, realising the fate that the executioner would meet at her father’s hand should she fail to let herself die, forgave the executioner for attempting to kill her. It is said that she voluntarily took on the massive karmic guilt the executioner generated for killing her, thus leaving him guiltless. It is because of this that she descended into the Hell-like realms. While there, she witnessed first-hand the suffering and horrors that the beings there must endure, and was overwhelmed with grief. Filled with compassion, she released all the good karma she had accumulated through her many lifetimes, thus freeing many suffering souls back into Heaven and Earth. In the process, that Hell-like realm became a paradise. It is said that Yanluo, King of Hell, sent her back to Earth to prevent the utter destruction of his realm, and that upon her return she appeared on Fragrant Mountain.

Another tale says that Miao Shan never died, but was in fact transported by a supernatural tiger, believed to be the Deity of the Place, to Fragrant Mountain.

The Legend of Miao Shan usually ends with Miao Chuang Yen, Miao Shan’s father, falling ill with jaundice. No physician was able to cure him. Then a monk appeared saying that the jaundice could be cured by making a medicine out of the arm and eye of one without anger. The monk further suggested that such a person could be found on Fragrant Mountain. When asked, Miao Shan willingly offered up her eyes and arms. Miao Chuang Yen was cured of his illness and went to the Fragrant Mountain to give thanks to the person. When he discovered that his own daughter had made the sacrifice, he begged for forgiveness. The story concludes with Miaoshan being transformed into the Thousand Armed Guanyin, and the king, queen and her two sisters building a temple on the mountain for her. She began her journey to heaven and was about to cross over into heaven when she heard a cry of suffering from the world below. She turned around and saw the massive suffering endured by the people of the world. Filled with compassion, she returned to Earth, vowing never to leave till such time as all suffering has ended.

After her return to Earth, Guanyin was said to have stayed for a few years on the island of Mount Putuo where she practised meditation and helped the sailors and fishermen who got stranded. Guanyin is frequently worshipped as patron of sailors and fishermen due to this. She is said to frequently becalm the sea when boats are threatened with rocks. After some decades Guanyin returned to Fragrant Mountain to continue her meditation.

Receive Wonderful Blessings of Wealth, Peace, and Protection from the Four Dharmakaya Relic Mantras and Lama Atisha Combined Amulet (2): A Focus on Lama Atisha Amulet!

Published Pebrero 6, 2018 by jptan2012

In my previous post, I introduced you the FOUR DHARMAKAYA RELIC MANTRAS, now allow me to introduce you to another very powerful Buddhist amulet called – LAMA ATISHA PROTECTION AMULET.

This is said to be one of the most powerful protection amulet in Buddhism. According to Lama Zopa Rinpoche, simply seeing or touching a copy of the said amulet will bring a person tremendous protection against physical harm.

It functions like that of the scapular for Catholics. If a person has this on his body at that time of his or her death, it is guaranteed that he or she will have a good rebirth and will be saved from the lower realms. If displayed inside the house or office, one will be saved from bad influences of other people and it will help create harmony. It is also very good to have this amulet if one is in the hospital, to protect a person from the yin chi of the hospital, and it will also prevent you from getting the attention of the lost souls. Thus, it is also a very good amulet to have to wear when one is going to a funeral or cemetery.

I don’t have a personal story or story that I heard first hand about the LAMA ATISHA PROTECTION AMULET, but one of the most popular story associated by the LAMA ATISHA PROTECTION AMULET, and is widely accepted by the different Buddhist traditions is a story that happened fairly recently. It was suppose to have happened to a young Tibetan man and his family.

As you all know, China has invaded Tibet and a lot of people they are either doing some ethnic cleansing or is slowly erasing the cultures and traditions of the Tibetan who are still in Tibet. The man’s name is Tenzin Choejor ( the truth is Tenzin is a fairly common Tibetan boy’s name because it means ‘holder of Buddhist doctrines’, and the current Dalai Lama’s name himself is Tenzin. I was told that Choezor is not a family name but it is a second name, which means Dharma Wealth. From the name of the man, it can be concluded that his parents are devout Buddhist, but this is not unique because most Tibetans are devout Buddhist.)

Tenzin Choejor’s family is one of the many Tibetans who’ve experienced oppression in Tibet. He was born after the 14th Dalai Lama has fled to Tibet to escape the Chinese oppression, so it can be said that he has never experienced true freedom. He has always long for to escape the Chinese oppression of Tibet but has not dared to do it because all his family are in Tibet. However, his perspective changed when he got married and started to have his own family.

It is said that Tenzin Choejor has planned to escape with his parents, but in a country ruled by oppression and where paranoia is really high, the government soon found out about his plan to escape. It is said that it was possible that another relative or a friend squealed on him. Like most Tibetans who plan to escape or oppose the Chinese government, he was tortured and separated from his family and was put to hard labor for several years. Upon his release, he find it hard to start a new life, because he was considered as an ‘ex-convict’ and even fellow Tibetans who took pity on him will not hire him because they’re afraid that they might earn the ire of the Chinese government. This is when he realized and decided that the only way for him to survive and take care of his family is if they escape Tibet. This time, however, Tenzin Choejor is more careful and he only confided to his father, who told him to ask for the blessing of his grandfather, his father’s uncle, for a blessing because it will be a long journey, a very difficult one, and if caught they might be killed on the spot or if they’re not caught they might die of freezing in the mountains. His father also cautioned him to think again of his plans because Tenzin Choejor’s children then aged 10 and 7 might not survive the trip. However, Tenzin Choejor knew that’s the only way for them to have a better life, and he thought it is better to risk their lives that forever live under the Chinese oppression.

Tenzin Choejor great uncle is one of the few monks left in Tibet who has personally met the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, and because he is monk in a place under Chinese rule, it is expected that he is very poor. So he has nothing to offer Tenzin Choejor but the blessing that Tenzin Choejor seeks from him. He performed some Buddhist protection ritual, which was improvised to adjust to their situation, but then took Tenzin Choejor aside to tell him that there is one thing that he would like to give Tenzin Choejor.

He told Tenzin Choejor that he believe that the only reason he was able to escape the Chinese’s physical oppression, unlike most monks, is because of an amulet that he has kept for a long time. He told Tenzin Choejor that he believes that the amulet is one of the reasons that he remained alive under the hands of the Chinese communist government. He then gave Tenzin Choejor a leather cloth where the image of LAMA ATISHA PROTECTION AMULET is printed. He told Tenzin Choejor that the amulet would keep his family safe. It is said that Tenzin Choejor initially refused to accept the amulet, but his great uncle insisted and told him that he has no need for the amulet because of his old age and that he is ready to part with his body.

Tenzin Choejor then proceeded to escape Tibet. It must be noted that after the initial exodus of Tibetans from Tibet, the Chinese communist government has intensified border security, making it harder for all Tibetan planning to go to exile to leave Tibet. There is no exact statistics as to how many people have been killed or captured and tortured just because the seek a better life. Tenzin Choejor armed with determination and faith in his ‘religion’ decided to set out on an escape with his wife and two young children.

On his way to India, Tenzin Choejor encountered several problems, but somehow they manage to get away with it. Among these two things are an encounter with a Chinese soldiers and a fight against nature.

First, on their escape, they literally came across some Chinese soldiers, and because of fatigue and coldness because of the freezing snow, he and his wife noticed them a little too late. They came across two drunken Chinese soldiers, and was almost apprehended, in fact, a gun was already pointed at them. Should the soldiers decided to shoot at them, the soldiers won’t get reprimanded because there is a standing order to shoot to kill all people who are trying to escape. Fearing for the life of his family, Tenzin Choejor used his body to block his wife and kids, and instinctively touched the LAMA ATISHA PROTECTION AMULET given to him by his great uncle and started to call on the Buddhas. According to their testimony, Tenzin Choejor’s wife didn’t know where he mustered her courage to talk to the soldiers.

Tenzin Choejor’s wife knows how to speak Chinese, being born and raised under the Chinese communist government; Chinese has been her second language. Tenzin Choejor knows the language also but because he grew up in the countryside he understands it better than he can speak. His wife on the other hand knows how to speak it but not fluently either. But she managed to address the soldiers and pretend that she is Chinese, and when asked why Tenzin Choejor’s himself doesn’t speak she told them that her husband is deaf – mute. There are many loopholes to her cover, like how can she explain their looks and what are they doing in the mountain, but because it was dark and maybe because the Chinese soldiers were drunk they let them go. Tenzin Choejor believes that it is because of LAMA ATISHA PROTECTION AMULET.

The second ordeal was when they were in the mountain, Tenzin Choejor’s second child got really ill. Without medicine all Tenzin Choejor and his wife can do are to call on the help of the Buddhas. Tenzin Choejor decided to take off the amulet and placed it on top of his son’s body. Needless to say, the son got healed.

After weeks of travelling in the mountain they finally got to the border of Tibet and India, where they plan to go in exile and seeks the Dalai Lama’s protection. But little did they know that India besieged by thousands and thousand of Tibetan exiles and without a place to put them has made it harder for Tibetans to go inside their country. Though they don’t understand each other, Tenzin Choejor understands the problem with their facial and body language. He started to touch the amulet again and hope for the best. Soon they were met by a Tibetan who took their story. Three days after they were put on a holding area, luckily with food, they were told that they could stay in India.

According to Tenzin Choejor, and these were acknowledge by the highest ranking lamas, it was because of the LAMA ATISHA PROTECTION AMULET that Tenzin Choejor and his family survived the ordeal.

But who is LAMA ATISHA?

For that allow me to share his story using Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s own words. The following was lifted from the archive of FPMT.

Having a little bit of understanding of the life story of Atisha is very beneficial for our mind, so we can try to understand the teaching he wrote. By understanding Atisha’s life story and how he practiced Dharma and achieved realizations, devotion arises and we can feel that his teaching is most precious and pure. 1

Actually it is a very long life story, and it is divided into three parts. In order to have some idea about the great bodhisattva Atisha and how he benefited sentient beings, there are stories about his birth, his home, his birthplace and his early life. The stories explain how he achieved great knowledge and realizations with that holy body. Then after achieving the knowledge and realizations of the path, he benefited the teachings and helped sentient beings— he led the disciples and sentient beings to happiness.

Atisha’s birthplace was in Bengal, India. He was born as a prince and his family was extremely wealthy. He was surrounded by servants and workers, and there were 100,000 people just in his palace. The palace had thirteen golden roofs and 25,000 golden banners on the top, and there were also many pools, like in the West. At the palace there were 25,000 pools and beautiful parks, gardens of beautiful flowers that people could enjoy, seven bridges, and special trees that only grow in India.

When Atisha was three, he became an expert in general education—in astrology, letters, the brahmas, these things. He also became expert in discriminating the inner and outer being, so his parents wanted him very badly to take the place of the king. They tried very hard, but after some time he left with 300 horses, disguised as an army going to fight.

Many people went into the forest with Atisha to seek the guru. He took many teachings on refuge and bodhicitta, and then the guru sent him home to check up and try to understand the suffering of life. This happened three times. He came back, the guru sent him to another guru, and that guru sent him home to check up on the shortcomings of worldly life. His parents tried very hard to have him marry and take the place of a king. They invited all the beautiful women of the country to a party, and let them all dance around, but it didn’t work.

Atisha explained, “ There is no difference for my mind between this palace and a prison. There is no difference between beautiful, expensive clothes and the torn cloth in the garbage. There is no difference between delicious food and dog meat and pus. There is no difference between princesses and mara women—devil women.” Why devil women? Because they transform into beautiful bodies and cheat us. His parents listened to him.

Atisha followed 157 gurus perfectly and received many teachings, initiations and Vajrayana teachings. Once, while he was at home, Tara, the female aspect of Buddha, instructed him in a dream not to be attached to the samsaric happiness of worldly life. After this, Atisha went to see his guru. Then one day, after receiving many initiations, he thought, “There is no Vajrayana teaching left that I don’t know. I have become the most learned.” He felt a little bit of pride. That night, he had a dream that many female dakinis— transformations of buddhas who have high realizations of tantra—showed him many Vajrayana texts that he had never seen before. This made him lose his feelings of pride.

Atisha wanted to receive Mahamudra realization in his lifetime, by living in Vajrayana conduct. One of his gurus, Rahula, suddenly realized with his psychic power that Atisha was thinking this. Without any resistance, Rahula appeared in front of Atisha and instructed him, “What are you doing, forgetting all the sentient beings by leaving them? Take ordination and do great work for the teachings. This will be greatly beneficial for the teachings.” So, Atisha took ordination when he was twenty-nine years old. He was persuaded to do so by his guru and also by the buddha’s female aspect, Tara, Guru Shakyamuni Buddha, Maitreya Buddha and many other buddhas and Vajrayana deities such as Heruka, in his dreams.

After some time, when he was going around the Bodhgaya stupa—the temple in India, the most holy place where Guru Shakyamuni Buddha received enlightenment— above the stupa, in space, he saw the transformation of a young woman asking an old woman a question. At that time Atisha was concerned with quickly receiving enlightenment, and in space the young woman was asking the old woman, “What path should we practice in order to quickly receive enlightenment?” The old woman said, “Train the mind in love and compassion, in bodhicitta.”

Again, when Atisha was going around the stupa, there were paintings on the walls that talked to each other. One painting asked the other what path we should follow to reach enlightenment quickly, and the other answered, “Train the mind in love and compassion, and bodhicitta.”

Again, when Atisha was going around near Nagarjuna’s caves, he saw the statues of Buddha communicating, saying, “Train the mind in love and the compassionate thought, bodhicitta.” There was one ivory statue, and it said, “Yogi, if you want to quickly receive enlightenment, train the mind in love and compassion, and the thought of bodhicitta.” Many statues spoke like this.

Atisha went to see Guru Serlingpa, and he spent about twelve years taking the complete teachings on bodhicitta. In the presence of Guru Serlingpa, he received the actual realization of bodhicitta. Then Lama Serlingpa predicted that he should go to Tibet, the northern snow land.

At that time, there was a lot of degeneration of the teachings in Tibet. The people did not know how to practice the teachings, and they were confused about the practice of sutra and tantra together. The king of Tibet, Lha Lama Yeshe Ö, sent twenty-one boys to India to study Dharma and all of them except two died from the heat. These two came back to Tibet and told the king that everyone was talking about Atisha, the pandit, and that they should invite him to Tibet to help. These two translators’ names were Rinchen Sangpo and Legshey.

As soon as Lha Lama Yeshe Ö, the king of Tibet, heard the name of Atisha, incredible devotion arose in his mind, and he decided to invite Atisha to Tibet. He sent many gold offerings to India to invite Atisha, but it didn’t work. Then afterwards, he went himself to find gold for Atisha, and he was captured and put in the prison by an irreligious king who didn’t want the spread of Dharma in Tibet.

King Lha Lama Yeshe Ö’s nephew, Jangchub Ö, came to see him in prison. The irreligious king told Jangchub Ö, “I won’t free your uncle until you find gold the size of his body.” So, Jangchub Ö found enough gold to reach up to his neck, but still the irreligious king was not satisfied. He said, “If you don’t bring gold the size of his head, I won’t let him be free from prison.” Again, Jangchub Ö went to his uncle, the king of Tibet, and explained all these things.

The imprisoned king of Tibet, Lha Lama Yeshe Ö, explained to his nephew that since a lot of gold was offered to the irreligious king and he was still not satisfied, Jangchub Ö should not offer this king even one handful of gold. King Lha Lama Yeshe Ö said he was now very old and did not have long to live, and it would be more beneficial for his nephew, Jangchub Ö, to take the gold. He said to Jangchub Ö, “I don’t care if I die in prison. Take all this gold and ask Atisha to come to Tibet and spread the Dharma.” Then the king sent a message to Atisha through his nephew, saying, “I gave up my life to invite you to Tibet. Please guide me with your compassion. What I have in my mind is only for you to come to Tibet and spread the teachings.”

The imprisoned king sent the message with Jangchub Ö with a suffering, frantic voice, and then he passed away in prison. His nephew sent a translator with many gold offerings to invite Atisha, but the kings and abbots of India wanted Atisha to stay there. Finally, Atisha received permission and he came secretly to Tibet and helped spread the Dharma there. According to his teachings, he wrote the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment there.

Atisha spread the pure Mahayana teaching like the rising sun, and all conflict, ignorance, and wrong conceptions were destroyed. His text was translated into English by some Tibetan lamas and other translators. I am reading the translation of this teaching because it is extremely beneficial. It is so short. Atisha did great work and brought so much benefit to India and Tibet. In India he destroyed many followers of other religions, wrong paths and wrong conceptions. He did great work.

These days, many young people from the West have the chance to hear the teachings and to understand and practice these meditations on the gradual path to enlightenment. They can find satisfaction in their lives, and they can make their lives meaningful and happy. They integrate it in their own mind, and they understand that there is a chance to make their lives meaningful. All these things are due to the kindness of Atisha, the great bodhisattva.

This great bodhisattva, Atisha, lived in discipline, and had the realization of moral conduct. He kept the 253 precepts purely, and on the basis of that, the bodhisattva’s precepts, the moral conduct precepts and the Vajrayana precepts. He had unshakeable, firm, one-pointed concentration that could last for years—even if hundreds of rockets were flying nearby they couldn’t disturb or shake his meditation. He had perfect realization of shunyata, the absolute nature, and he achieved high tantric realizations, seeing himself in the form of deities.

Atisha had high tantric realization without projections, and he did not see ordinary places—we see an ordinary house built of mud or cement, an impure place, but Atisha had only pure projections and pure view, and he always saw the view of the mandala of the deities. He had high Vajrayana realizations and he was able to transform even kaka into nectar and poison into medicine.

We can meditate like this to increase devotion to Atisha’s teachings. We can do checking meditation according to that. We may find it difficult at the beginning of the subject, and it may take time to understand, but by checking and understanding more and more the various meditations and teachings, gradually it will become clear within our mind.

Please note that Choejor is also spelled as Choezor and that the story from the archive of FPMT is part of Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s teaching of the life and work of Lama Atisha at 9th Kopan Course in 1976.

A Business Deal That Brings in a Huge Financial Miracle and Improves Physical Health: A Personal Miraculous Testimony of A Reader About the Traditional Sutra Amulet!

Published Marso 24, 2017 by jptan2012
sutra-amulets

These are just one copy each of the very limited copies sent to me by my Guru Lama of the THE SUTRA OF THE PAST VOWS OF THE KSITIGARBHA BODHISATTVA, THE DIAMOND OF PERFECT WISDOM SUTRA and THE MEDICINE BUDDHA SUTRA. Sutras are also used as very powerful amulets, that is why you will often old Buddhist Chinese houses has a copy of the Sutra on their altar though they might not be reciting the sutra itself.

A lot of people are in search for miracles or a miracle, but the truth is miracles happen more often than we realized, sometimes it is simply a matter of really opening ourselves up to it.

Today, allow me to share another wonderful story about a miracles experienced by a reader about the Traditional Sutra Amulet. Daniel or Niel is a 46 – year – old husband and businessman. He contacted me about 2 months ago and requested for the Traditional Sutra Amulet (TSA).

According to Niel, he needs the TSA because he is at the crossroad of his business. For it to survive, he needs to be able to expand and land bigger projects. However, he is still relatively known to focus on a certain industry, and while this has become his greatest strength, it is also his biggest weakness, because he is unable to expand to other industry. In this case to the sector of servicing the malls.

But aside from this, he also mentioned to me about his son who had a freak accident in school and became paralyzed. The doctor said that his son still has a chance to walk again but that it will be a long tedious process. He will need therapy everyday. The sad thing his son doesn’t seem to be responding well to the therapy.

And so he got the TSA, in his case he got the Avatamsaka Sutra Amulet, and that was about 2 months ago.

avatamsaka-sutra

One of 5 copies of the Avatamsaka Sutra (Kuan Yin Bodhisattva Chapter) that’s available here in the Philippines. Note: I have since received a few more copies of the Avatamsaka Sutra.

And I just got an email from him. You can read what he has to say about his miraculous experience about the TSA. Putting it here verbatim, I just put a translation at the parts where he wrote in Filipino.

Dear JP!

Do you still remember why I got the Sutra amulet from you?

I was wishing that I’d get to land an important business deal worth millions of money. You see I got it this morning! Siyempre ikaw una kong naisip at naisip ko agad na talagang miracle ito because ang laki ng kalaban namin dito. (OF COURSE, YOU’RE THE FIRST PERSON I THOUGHT ABOUT AND I ALSO KNEW RIGHT AWAY THAT THIS IS A MIRACLE BECAUSE WE ARE UP AGAINST A BIG COMPANY.) But my company was chosen and more than that the bigger miracle is our accreditation to this company was fast tracked so we can work on the project right away. Alam mo naman mahigpit ang ** so dapat matinding accreditation process (AS YOU KNOW [NAME OF COMPANY – WHICH I DELETED) HAS STRICT GUIDELINES SO WE HAVE TO GO THROUGH SOME STRICT GUIDELINES), pero (BUT) was told it was (NAME OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE COMPANY – I PURPOSELY DELETED HER NAME) herself who said that we should be fast tracked so we can work on everything ASAP.

I have told you before that this is a project that I need to help me survive in the industry and also to help for the expenses for my son’s therapy. Malaki ito (THIS IS BIG) and I’m so happy that I got it. On top of that, my son’s response to his therapy sessions is so much better since we got the sutra amulet. Sabi yan ng doctor and therapist niya. Hindi naman nila alam na may amulet kami (THAT’S ACCORDING TO HIS DOCTOR AND THERAPIST AND THEY DON’T EVEN KNOW THAT WE HAVE AN AMULET). I initially found the sutra amulet to be quite expensive, but I now know that it is nothing compared to the blessing that I got.

Thank you talaga. Let’s have lunch soon, my treat para mapasalamatan ka naman namin mag asawa ng maayos(SO WE CAN THANK YOU PROPERLY).

If you don’t think this is a miracle then I don’t know what is.

Chant – A – Mantra 8: Creating An Auric Amulet (1000 Days of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Mantra for a Good Prosperous Life and Ultimate Protection)

Published Nobyembre 29, 2016 by jptan2012

One of the most common question people ask me is whether we all really need an amulet. What if we don’t have one does that mean success and luck and protection is going to be more elusive?

The answer to this is that amulets are simply but tools for us to continuously tap into the energies or blessings or power of the Buddha or Bodhisattva or Deity to which an amulet is made from. And it is an effective means of tapping into said power. In fact, His Holiness the  Dalai Lama when escaping the Chinese oppression and flee Tibet to India is said to have carried a powerful amulet and a Kalachakra with him. The current and acknowledged 17th Karmapa is said to have a Vajrapani Ruel with him, also another Tibetan Monk who was sent to hard labor and was considered as a political prisoner was also believed to have been given a Vajrapani Ruel to pave the way for his release. You can read the last two stories in a post entitled – VAJRAPANI RUEL STORIES: THE 17TH KARMAPA’S RELATIVELY EASY ESCAPE; THE MIRACULOUS RELEASE OF A TIBETAN MONK FROM CHINESE PRISON AND LABOR CAMP; AND THE WEALTH LUCK BESTOWED UPON THE PRODIGAL SON. So we cannot deny the importance and relevance of carrying or wearing an amulet. However, the truth is the best amulets are those that are aurically created. Something that is not physically tangible but is strong enough to give us physical and psychically protect us and also gives us some of our heart’s wishes.

KsitigarbhaThere are many ways to ‘make’ such an amulet, however, it takes times and some are quite difficult to create and requires a very strong inner chi and deep knowledge of the spiritual esoteric practices or rituals.

Nevertheless, on THE SUTRA ON THE PAST VOWS OF EARTH STORE BODHISATTVA (Earth Store Bodhisattva is also known as Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva) Shakyamuni Buddha (also spelled as Sakyamuni Buddha and also called as Historical Buddha) shared with us one way to make auric amulet. An amulet that is not physically tangible. It does take time to make an amulet but according to my Guru Lama it is one of the most powerful amulet one can have. In fact, according to my Guru Lama when done properly one can also experience an abundance of wealth and financial luck as well as happy life. He is not taking this simply base on the said sutra, but rather he has recommended this to a Singaporean vendor several years ago and who after doing this went to become a very successful and rich businessman.

How to make this auric amulet?

First, it will be easier to do this is you have an image of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha OR A copy of THE SUTRA OF THE PAST VOWS OF EARTH STORE BODHISATTVA. Light an incense and chant mantra NAMO DA YUAN DI ZHANG WANG PU SA 1000 times a day for 1000 days (which is a little more than 3 years). By doing this, Lord Brahma and Lord Shakra, will always protect you and no harm will come to you and your family, on top of that they will be channel of auspicious blessings that will come your way.

earth-store-bodhisattva-sutra-traditional

This is a copy of the traditional SUTRA OF THE PAST VOWS OF BODHISATTVA KSITIGARBHA that my Guru Lama sent me.

NOTE: It has to be the mantra NAMO DA YUAN DI ZHANG WANG PU SA and not the other forms of mantra for this ritual to be effective.

Note: Will write about Lord Brahma and Lord Shakra in future articles.

I know it’s quite long but technically speaking it is not long for something so powerful. According to my Guru Lama doing this will give you an auric amulet that may even be more powerful than the Vajrapani Ruel. And the Vajrapani Ruel is considered as one of the most powerful amulet in the Buddhist pantheon, in fact, a lot of those who requested for it has shared their wonderful personal testimonies.

Remember this has to be done everyday; you miss a day you have to start all over again.

To avoid confusion, you can simply chant 10 full malas, which is equivalent to 1080 a day. My Guru Lama said chanting more than 1000 of the Earth Store Bodhisattva mantra is fine as long as it is not less than 1000 a day.

To know more about Ksitigarbha Bodhisatta / Earth Store Bodhisattva you read the post written about him entitled – Ksitigarbha Buddha is a Bodhisattva Who Vowed to Help Those Who Suffer in This World and In Hell.

2013 – Year of the Water Snake Chinese Animal Zodiac Feng Shui Forecast: Rat and Ox (Part 2)

FIRST, THE RAT…

Will generally have a good year. You’ll find that your career will be great and you will be quite successful. Wealth luck might be good also. I say might, because while you have the potential to have this luck, it might be dampen a little by the Black Sky Star, which is found through the use of the Purple Flower Star Astrology or Purple Star Astrology. Nevertheless, this year you’ll find yourself surrounded by helpful people and it’s up to you to utilize them.

However, you’ll also find yourself a little overwhelmed with the possible work ahead of you. Remember you can only get your wealth luck if you work for it and being swallowed by the task ahead will set you back.

You have to be careful though with your health luck. This is also due to the presence of the Black Sky Star. While this won’t bring about any serious illness, having this star might set you back a little because of a bad cold or a fever.

When it comes to relationships, this is quite a bad year for both the single and partnered rat.

The Black Sky Star is further aggravated by the two clashing pillars of the year.

Feng Shui Recommendations:

Wear an image of a Protective God (Sun Wukong or Kuan Kong (Guan Gong) or Amitabha Buddha) to protect yourself from the Black Sky Star.

Amitabha Buddha is a very powerful protector Buddha.

Amitabha Buddha is a very powerful protector Buddha.

Wear or carry an image the Victory Banner.

Wear a Holy Gourd or a Medicine Buddha Pendant, preferably with Mantra.

Carry or wear the Double Happiness symbol.

Wear the Lung – Ta (also known as the Wind Horse) to avoid the slight bump brought about by the two clashing pillars of the year. You don’t need this if you have the complete elements in your Bazi. But wearing one won’t do any harm but it will continue to bless you with continued success. This is especially true for people born in the year of the RAT, TIGER, DRAGON, SNAKE, SHEEP/GOAT, MONKEY, ROOSTER, and PIG.

Since the Five Yellow Star is in the Center this year. It is also advisable that all of us safeguard ourselves from this star. We don’t know when we’re going to be in the center of a house, or building, etc. It is advisable for all us to wear the Five Element Pagoda.

SECOND, THE OX…

Will have a very good year for both personal and professional life. Your life palace shows that you have the Wealth Star and this means that money will easily come to you this year. However, note that you have the tendency to get into a lot of argument, so just simply watch out for that. This is further strengthened by the Excellent Seal Star, which is shown by using the Purple Flower Star Astrology.

The Ox born in 1973 should watch out for the Snake born in September of 1965. For some reason, which started last year, the two signs, which are normally friendly to each other, will find themselves clashing. The Ox seems to be at the loosing end, but the Snake seems to be at the wrong. However, this is not generalizing but seems to be what is indicated in the chart. While this particularly true between the Ox born in the year 1973 and Snake born in the year 1965 with focus on the month of September, all Ox born people must be careful in getting into arguments which might lead to a long term disagreement or fight.

The Purple Star Astrology shows that there are a number of minor namely the Goat Horn Star and the Brown Flag Star, which might cause some accidents and/or aggravate the possibility of an argument.

Feng Shui Recommendations:

Wear as a pendant an image of the Wealth Deity/God like Sun Wukong or Kuan Kong. This is if you want to further enhance your wealth luck. They will also act as a protector from the effects of the Goat Horn Star and the Brown Flag Star.

Wear or carry the Ksitigarbha Fireball.

TENTH, THE ROOSTER…

Will have very good financial wealth luck this year. However, the presence of the violent star in your life palace indicates that you have to be careful about losing your money. Be careful also for possible violent incidents this year.

Career wise it will also be very good for you. However, the presence of Crooked Star as indicated by the Purple Star Astrology indicates that you might have some reputation problem towards the middle of the year.

However, you will also notice that you will seldom get recognized by your efforts and that other people might get credit from your hard work. Because of this, success in terms of recognition might not be attained.

However, be happy that the Purple Flower Star Astrology or Purple Star Astrology also indicates the presence of General Power Star and the Land Relief Star. The General Power Star indicates that if you get into a problem, you will find solutions easily if you focus on your own strength, also the Land Relief Star will also give you the resources that you need to attain whatever you wish for.

Feng Shui Recommendations:

Wear an image of Sun Wukong or Kuan Kong to protect you from the violent star.

Wear an image of the Maitreya Buddha (also fondly and popularly called as the Happy Fat Buddha) to cure the effects of the Crooked Star.

Wear or carry a Victory Banner to help you become always victorious.

The back side of the WISH FULFILLING AND BUDDHA MANTRA BLESSING PENDANT has the images of the Victory Banner, Lung-Ta or Windhorse, the seed syllable of the Goddess Tara - TAM, and the symbolic script of the MEDICINE BUDDHA MANTRA, WISH FULFILLING MANTRA, and the NEGATIVE KARMA CLEANSING MANTRA.

ELEVENTH, THE DOG…

Will have a good year even if wealth luck is not very high. You have the Heaven’s Luck or Blessing star in your life palace and you’ll find yourself being bless in a lot of ways, especially when it comes to your personal life. While wealth luck is not very high, it is neither bad. In fact, you’ll still see some improvement.

The Purple Star Astrology indicates the presence of two other stars. First, the Death Amulet Star, which means that there is a possibility of death or serious illness not with the Dog itself but may be with an elderly family member.

The other star is the Haul Paddle Star, which indicates that there is going to be a big professional change in your life this year.

Feng Shui Recommendations:

Wear a 3-Legged Toad pendant or an image of the Yellow Dzambhala as a pendant to enhance your career luck.

Put an image of Kuan Yin (The Goddess of Mercy), or the Medicine Buddha to counter the effects of the Death Amulet Star.

To ensure that the Haul Paddle Star enters smoothly wear an image of the Goddess Tara or the seed syllable of the Goddess Tara, which is TAM. The WISH FULFILLING AND BUDDHA’S BLESSING MANTRA PENDANT also has the seed syllable TAM.

This is a jade Goddess Tara pendant from my personal collection.

Wear the Lung – Ta (also known as the Wind Horse) to avoid the slight bump brought about by the two clashing pillars of the year. You don’t need this if you have the complete elements in your Bazi. TWELFTH, THE BOAR/PIG…

Is in direct conflict with the Tai Sue and this might pose some of the difficulties in attaining your personal luck and your heaven’s luck.

Wealth luck is average, however, since your life palace is flank by a Violent Star, you will have to be careful that you don’t lose this through robbery. Be careful also that you don’t get into unnecessary expenditures also.

Personal luck should be better, unless you’re unable to appease the Tai Suey.

Feng Shui Recommendations:

Carry or wear a Piyao (also spelled or called as Pi Yao, Pi Xiu, Pixiu).

Wear a Sun Wukong or Kuan Kong (also spelled as Guan Gong) to protect you from the Violent Star.

Kuan Kong

Kuan Kong

Wear an image of the Yellow Dzambhala or a 3-Legged Toad pendant to help enhance your wealth luck.

Wear the Lung – Ta (also known as the Wind Horse) to avoid the slight bump brought about by the two clashing pillars of the year. You don’t need this if you have the complete elements in your Bazi. SEVENTH, THE HORSE…

Will have not have very ideal wealth luck this year. However, career luck might be on the swing. Meaning, this is a year where employed people born in the year of the Horse will be luckier than the one’s who are in business. The employed horse will have a more stable financial luck than the entrepreneur horse.

Also the Purple Flower Star Astrology also known as the Purple Star Astrology indicates that you have Bad Chi Star, which will have an effect on your overall luck and pull you down a little. But the Purple Star Astrology also indicates that you have the Sun Star, which is a very good star to have. This together with the Flying Star #9 (Future or Multiplying Luck Star) indicates that you somehow your inner being will indicate whether you will have a good life or a bad one.

Feng Shui Recommendations:

Wear an image of the Yellow Dzambhala to help you with your wealth luck.

Wear a Ruyi or an image of Sun Wukong or Kuan Kong (Guan Gong) to help you with your business. Wearing an image of Sun Wukong or wearing a Kalachakra Pendant will also help you deal with the Bad Chi Star.

The Kalachakra symbol is one of the most powerful protection symbol in Buddhism. It actually consists of ten syllable mantra, with it symbolic script condensed into one. The mantra itself is HO HAM KSHAMALA VARAYA HUM PHAT. However, the mantra of the Kalachakra is never chanted without the mantra OM AH HUM. Making the complete mantra of Kalachakra - OM AH HUM HO HAM KSHAMALA VARAYA HUM PHAT. This is the reason why I decided to put the symbolic script of the mantra OM AH HUM on top of the Kalachakra symbol. As mentioned this is a very powerful protection symbol and can be likened to the Scapular of the Catholics. In fact, you'll seldom see a Tibetan Monk with wearing the symbol of the Kalachakra on their body. It may be hidden but most likely they have it somewhere on their body. But you'll never see them have the symbolic scripts tattooed because it is considered extremely bad luck to have a mantra tattooed on your body.

Wear or carry the Wish Fulfilling and the Negative Karma Cleansing Mantra to help you enhance your good karma and clear out all your negative karma.

Wear the Lung – Ta (also known as the Wind Horse) to avoid the slight bump brought about by the two clashing pillars of the year. You don’t need this if you have the complete elements in your Bazi. EIGHTH, THE SHEEP/GOAT…

Will have to be very careful about their health luck. You’ll find yourself sicklier or more prone in getting into accidents.

Wealth luck is not very ideal either, and you have to be very careful in getting into big business transactions.

There is also no significant good change in your career life, and you have to be very careful about being complacent because a simple mistake can be detrimental.

What’s worst is that the illness star that flies into your life palace is further aggravated by the negative stars that are indicated by the Purple Star Astrology. There are several of these stars, and they are the Flying Chaste Star, which may make you more prone to accidents. Also you have in your life palace the Earth Death Star and the Earth Door Star, this star indicates that they may be death of a loved one and a possibility of grave illness.

Front side of the Wealth and Master Protection Pendant

NINTH, THE MONKEY…

Will see an easing from arguments and relationship problems. However, I’m afraid that all is not well because this time the Monkey will take a beating with their health luck.

Wealth luck is also going to be a bit of a challenge. It will feel like that ‘you’re swimming against the current’ and it will exhaust putting more toll against your health.

While there will be lesser arguments, you still need to watch out for your relationships with the people you work with. Do have less talk and more action. Do not just bark you have to bite a little.

Monkeys who are married to a snake, especially Monkeys born in 1968 should face the reality that they are married to a person who might not be totally honest with them. Love and respect your husband but take a look at what’s your worth so that your spouse won’t feel that they can get away with their infidelity with you.

The Hanged Spirit Star as indicated by the Purple Star Astrology might make you feel insecure further aggravating your relationship problems. You have to remember that you can share your feelings with your family members. An Ox family member may be especially helpful.

Be careful also of the Painful Knot Star also indicated by the Purple flower Star Astrology, which may bring in a lot of gossips and might put you in a compromising situation.

However, the Country Wealth Star of the Purple Star Astrology and the Multiplying Star of the Flying Star method indicates that you will get some of the help you will need.

Feng Shui Recommendations:

Wear an image of the Medicine Buddha with mantra or a jade Wulou pendant.

Wear an image of the Yellow Dzambhala or the 3-Legged Toad as a pendant to help you with your wealth luck.

A married Monkey should tie an amethyst geode on the foot of their bed and wear a double happiness symbol pendant.

Wear the Ruyi to give you more authority.

Wear an image of Sun Wukong to help you in your business pursuits.

To counter the effects of the Hanged Spirit Star wear an image of the Maitreya Buddha (also popularly and fondly called as the Happy Fat Buddha).

This is from my personal collection. I wear this pendant everyday. In choosing an image of the Happy Fat Buddha to be worn as a pendant, always look for the face. Make sure that it has happy jolly face.

To counter the Purple Knot Star wear a Kalachakra pendant.

For over-all protection and luck enhancement wear an image of the Chundi Avalokitesvara or the Thousand Hand Kuan Yin.

2013 – Year of the Water Snake Chinese Animal Zodiac Feng Shui Forecast: Dragon & Snake (Part 4)

Published Disyembre 22, 2012 by jptan2012

FIFTH, THE DRAGON…

Will have a generally good year. It is also a year where in scholastic pursuit or scholastic approach to things will help you reap success and wealth. You’re also flank by the Flying Star #9 meaning what you sow is what you will also reap. Do more good things and you will also be rewarded with more blessing.

Money or wealth luck will be smooth but you have to more open to advice coming from your family. Do not dupe yourself into thinking that you know everything.

Romance luck may be good for single dragons; however, those who are partnered should safeguard themselves from a possible third party. Whether you’re a single dragon or a married or partner dragon you should be thankful for the presence Crimson Chamber Star, as indicated by the Purple Flower Star Astrology, because this star will enhance the positive effects of the Romance Star but at the same time it will help safe guard the relationship of the dragons who are already in a relationship.

You are also partially affected by the Argumentative Star thus it will be good to take control of your temper.

The 37, 63 and 71 years old Dragon should be careful with their health.

The Tai Suey is also in the same sector of the sector of your life palace. You’ll have to be careful not to offend the Tai Suey.

Feng Shui Recommendations:

Wear an image of the 3-legged toad or of the Yellow Dzambhala to enhance your wealth luck.

For single dragons wear a pair of mandarin ducks or the symbol of double happiness pendant.

Wear the Ksitigarbha Fireball as a pendant.

Wear a jade wu lou or holy gourd or an image of the Medicine Buddha pendant. You can also wear the symbolic script of the Medicine Buddha.

This is a sample of a Medicine Buddha pendant. This is similar to the one released by Lillian Too. Photo lifted in Google images.

Wear a Piyao either as a bracelet or as a pendant to appease the Tai Suey.

Wear the Lung – Ta (also known as the Wind Horse) to avoid the slight bump brought about by the two clashing pillars of the year. You don’t need this if you have the complete elements in your Bazi. But wearing one won’t do any harm but it will continue to bless you with continued success. SIXTH, THE SNAKE…

Will have to remember that you have a turbulent but potentially a good year. The stars are in your favor, however, the presence of the Tai Suey in your life palace will have to be taken care. You do this by sincerely being good and nice. You can also avoid the wrath of the Tai Suey by carrying or wearing an image of the Piyao (also spelled or called Pi Yao, Pixiu, Pi Xiu).

Also, some of the Snakes had very financially rewarding 2012. However, most of these are indirect wealth in the sense that they had this because of the big help or big influence of other people. You might still have that, however, the Snake that forgot and become swell headed will see themselves taking a financial dip this year. That is simply the law of Karma working as indicated by the future blessing’s star.

The Snake born in the year 1965 will have to learn to be humble, among all the other people born in the snake year, it is the one born in 1965 that has the highest potential to have good luck, but also has the highest potential to have bad luck, this is because you are greatly affected by the multiplying star thus making whatever you do or think multiply several fold.

All snake should be careful with their health and do watch out for possible accidents.

The Purple Flower Star Astrology or Purple Star Astrology also indicates that you have the Hidden Death Star. Despite of the name of the star, the star no effect on death, however, it has something to do with your family relationship. This star might lead to frequent arguments. Also, if you’re a married snake and are living with your in-laws, remember that you have to be humble in your manner in dealing with them. You have to be careful also because you have the potential to get into infidelity, worse you might set your eyes with one of your in-laws. Remember that this is a disgraceful act!!!

Again, for the Snake born in 1965, you will have the tendency to have a big fight with an Ox born in 1973. Without generalizing, the stars indicate that most likely it’s the Snake who is at fault. Remember that the Ox is only defending his/her family.

Feng Shui Recommendations:

Piyao worn as a bracelet or pendant.

Always get a Pi Yao pendant that has an active stance.

Wear an image of Kuan Yin or Green Tara or Ji Gong to help you remain humble. Wearing a prayer wheel pendant, and putting several prayer wheels in your office, room, and home will also help.

2013 – Year of the Water Snake Chinese Animal Zodiac Feng Shui Forecast: Tiger & Rabbit (Part 3)

Published Disyembre 22, 2012 by jptan2012

THIRD, THE TIGER…

Will have a complicated year brought about by a lot of the conflicting stars both found in the Flying Star and Purple Flower Star. Having said that, if I were to say whether it is a good year or not, I’d say that it is generally going to be a good year.

The Flying Star formula indicates that you have the wealth luck this year, however, this calls for some strict discipline and vigilance on your end, because you are also somehow affected by the Flying Star #7, which is the Violent Star or what some people will call as the Robbery Star. Because of this your wealth luck will tend to be average, and you will see that you have to work harder for you to get the wealth that you aspire for. It can be ‘dangling’ in front of you but not easily attainable. But look on the bright side and all you have to do is enhance it and then cure the negative star.

Career luck is also a little promising, however, you’ll find yourself in a lonely path to success. Meaning you won’t be able to rely others except on your own hard work. As I said it’ll be a complicated year, you’ll find yourself on your own when it comes to success, however, when facing some trouble you’ll find helpful people, but their involvement can be a little fleeting.

Your Purple Flower Star Astrology indicates that you have the Six Danger Star. The 6 Danger star despite of the name doesn’t mean that there are six different kinds of danger. However, it is still that one should be wary of because it is a star that may bring about feelings of loneliness and depression. The star at the very least will make you ill tempered or moody.

Feng Shui Recommendations:

Carry or wear the 3-Legged Toad as a pendant. This is a very powerful Feng Shui enhancer or cure for people who are unable to attain the wealth luck that is already at hand.

The pendant that gave my friend is similar to this one. Wearing a three-legged toad pendant is also very auspicious.

Wear the image of Sun Wukong or Kuan Kong (Guan Gong) to protect you from the Violent Star or from any harm. Both Sun Wukong and Kuan Kong can also help you achieve better career. To know more about this you can read my post about Sun Wukong and Kuan Kong.

'The Great Sage, Equal of Heaven' Monkey King called Sun Wukong is a very powerful wealth and protector god that's both highly revered in Taoism and Buddhism.

Wear the image of Kuan Yin or Goddess Tara or the symbolic scripts – OM AH HUM, Medicine Buddha Mantra, or the seed syllable TAM to counter the negative effects of the Six Danger Star.

This is from my personal collection. The reason I love this pendants so much is because it has a inscription of the Heart Sutra at the back. I wear the smaller one everyday.

FOURTH, THE RABBIT…

Is in charge of his/her luck this 2013 – year of the Water Snake. This is the year when you need to a little scholastic in dealing with your wealth and career. Meaning, you have to study everything that you get into for you to be able to achieve success and wealth luck. The appearance of the Jade Hall Star as shown by the Purple Flower Star Astrology indicates that your scholastic luck is further enhanced. Rabbits who are in the field of education will find themselves ‘shining’ in their field.

The sad thing is the Flying Star #3, which is the Argumentative Star, is in your life palace now. This means you’ll find yourself getting into a lot of arguments and fight. If you are not careful, this might escalate into a legal problem. You will need to think twice before you act or react.

The Purple Flower Star Astrology also indicates that you have the Deferred Guest Star. This star is harmless unless activated by the person who has this star in his or her life palace. The Rabbit has this star so it is best not to activate this star. How does one activate this star? This star is activated when one goes into a highly Yin place such as a funeral or a cemetery. When the Deferred Guest Star is activated it will absorb all the negative energies that are present in the highly Yin place and it may create havoc in your life.

A Rabbit will also have a balance romantic luck. It will be positive but not too great that they have to worry about third party involvement.

Feng Shui Recommendations:

Ruyi to enhance career luck and wear an image of Yellow Dzambhala to enhance wealth luck.

Yellow Dzambhala

Yellow Dzambhala

If you’re single and want to look for a partner, you can enhance the romantic luck by wearing a double happiness symbol or a pair of mandarin ducks pendant.

To counter the Argumentative Star carry or wear an image of the Ksitigarbha Fireball.

Again the best way to avoid activating the Deferred Guest Star is to avoid going to highly Yin places like the funeral house, hospital or cemetery. However, if this totally unavoidable wear the symbol of the Kalachakra as pendant. Truth be told, if you have this star it is good to simply wear the symbol of Kalachakra because you’ll never know when you’ll get yourself into a Yin place, especially when you travel a lot.

Wear the Lung – Ta (also known as the Wind Horse) to avoid the slight bump brought about by the two clashing pillars of the year. You don’t need this if you have the complete elements in your Bazi. But wearing one won’t do any harm but it will continue to bless you with continued success. 2013 – Year of the Water Snake Chinese Animal Zodiac Feng Shui Forceast: An Introduction (Part 1)

In the past two posts we talked about the general Feng Shui forecast of the year 2013, which is the Year of the Water Snake.

I’m sure a lot of you want to know about the Feng Shui Forecast base on your Chinese birth signs, which is base on an Animal Zodiac.

First, allow me to state once again, just like last year, that while this is helpful, an accurate forecast can only be possible if one is to have your Bazi/Paht Chee. Nevertheless, this general forecast will still give you a bird’s eye view of your general luck.

Also for this year, I’ve decided to push the accuracy of this general forecast a little further by incorporating another branch of the Feng Shui called Purple Flower Star Astrology also known as the Purple Star Astrology. Please note that in Bazi Reading, the more advanced Feng Shui consultants almost always incorporate this technique. However, this is much more complicated to discuss that most of the Feng Shui consultants will just skip mentioning it.

Last year, when I made my 2012 YEAR OF THE WATER DRAGON FORECAST, I didn’t include this method, thus I was able to write my forecast at an earlier date. However, I thought I’d include this now to have a more accurate forecast. Incorporating this took a longer time for me to calculate everything but I think it is also better than just solely relying on the Flying Star with 8 Mansions method because the truth there are a lot of other stars that affects our luck.

I’ve decided to mention this now, because you’ll see that my forecast here will be a little different with the other more famous or commercially available forecast. That is most of them will solely use the Flying Star with the 8 Mansions method to do a general forecast.

The question is are they wrong in not including the Purple Flower Star Astrology method? The answer is NO. It works and it’ll give you a guide, but I just thought to incorporate this because it will give a more accurate forecast. Having said that, it is still a general guideline or overview of one’s luck. An accurate forecast can only be achieved with an accurate and methodological analysis of one’s Bazi or Paht Chee. But just the same, a basic guideline is better than none at all…

I have to warn you though that some of the name of the stars in the Purple Flower Star Astrology / Purple Star Astrology might sound funny, ridiculous or weird, that is because of the limitations of a good translation. One other thing that you’ll notice is that unlike the Flying Star Method wherein a single star can affect two or three different animal zodiac, the Purple Star Astrology is life palace specific and therefore a single star won’t affect more than one animal zodiac.

Reading through the forecast, some of you will wonder whether how you’re suppose to wear all the recommended Feng Shui charms/amulets. That was also my dilemma before, because some people will laugh at me how much pendant I have to wear because it looks like I have a very small tit at the middle of my chest or it looks like I might break my neck because of the heavy Feng Shui charm. It is also irritating how some will recommend a different Feng Shui cure or enhancers every year, which become an endless cycle of buying different Feng Shui charms/amulets every year. Because of this, I decided to design and make my own Feng Shui pendant that incorporates most of the cures or enhancers that I know we will need every year. These are the WEALTH AND MASTER PROTECTION PENDANT and the WISH FULFILLING AND BUDDHA’S BLESSING MANTRA PENDANT.

Front image of the WEALTH AND MASTER PROTECTION PENDANT is that of - THE GREAT SAGE, EQUAL OF HEAVEN SUN WUKONG.

Front image of the WEALTH AND MASTER PROTECTION PENDANT is that of – THE GREAT SAGE, EQUAL OF HEAVEN SUN WUKONG.

At the back of the Wealth and Master Protection Pendant is the Chinese character for the GREAT SAGE, EQUAL OF HEAVEN, and the image of the 3 Celestial Guardians (namely the Fu Dog, Piyao, and Chilin), at the bottom are the Five Element Pagoda and the Ksitigarbha Fireball. This is the only pendant that you'll get that has all the essential Feng Shui cures. I decided to just put them all in one pendant so that you don't have to wear a lot and spend a lot of money.

Wearing the 2 pendants has been a lot of help and now I really don’t feel like I have to break my neck wearing a lot of different stuff just to cure the bad stars and enhance the good stars. While the pendant that I designed is already ideal, admittedly, some of you will still need to have more than just the two pendants that I designed. Note that I first made these pendants for myself and my family until friends started ordering them also and when I started my blog, several of you, my readers has also ordered it. These pendants are made to order, and the biggest problem that I have now with them is how to make them more affordable by making it thinner. I’m still constantly looking for a jeweler who can make it more affordable by making it lighter.

2013 – Year of the Water Snake Bazi and Flying Star Feng Shui Forecast: A Balance Year with Fresh Energies (Part 2)

Published Disyembre 22, 2012 by jptan2012

In my last post, I wrote about what’s install for 2013 Year of the Water Snake, mostly base on its Bazi or Paht Chee chart. Although, I also mentioned about the Flying Star flying on its original position in the Lo Shu, which happens every 9 years, I wasn’t able to expound on it. I will discuss about it now.

If you’ve read my 2012 YEAR OF THE WATER DRAGON FENG SHUI FLYING STAR FORECAST, you’ll know that these stars basically will have the same effect in whatever location they may fly. So, what one can do is just familiarize themselves with the effects in whatever location they fly into. However, for this year, since they are flying back into their original position, which is a positive thing, some of the stars might have a slightly different effect. It will still retain its intrinsic effect but for some signs it might have some added or lesser degree of effect.

First, what are Flying Stars? Flying Stars or Xuan Xong is basically a discipline or branch of Feng Shui that studies the annual movement ‘stars’ or chi of a location that may affect your profession, health, career, finance/wealth, physical energy, psychological energy, spiritual energy. In Feng Shui the energy of your house and of your workplace is as important as your animal sign. The truth is Flying Star is also applied to the village, town, barangay, municipal, city, country and for the really good ones they can actually foretell the ‘fortune’ of the country by applying the Flying Stars concept in the world map.

The founder of Flying Stars assigned a specific number to each of this energy, and succeeding generation assigned a name depending on the effects of this energy. The name may vary a little from one Feng Shui consultant to another but they’re basically the same. It is also important to understand that the Tai Sui (Tai Suey) God and the 3 Killings are not part of the Flying Star concept. However, in discussing and determining the Flying Star of the house we include both the Tai Suey and the Three Killings in the equation because they also occupy the one of the nine squares in the Lo Shu Square.

This is the Flying Star Chart of the year. Image was lifted from Google Images.

The nine Lo Shu Square are – EAST, WEST, NORTH, SOUTH, SOUTHEAST, SOUTHWEST, NORTHEAST, NORTHWEST, CENTER.

To understand more about the Flying Star, I suggest check out Wikipedia. They offer a brief but clear explanation of the Flying Star. They’re also a lot of books that solely deal with Flying Stars Feng Shui.

THE EAST HAS THE FLYING STAR #3 (ARGUMENTATIVE STAR)

Effects: May cause relationship problems, numerous bickering, litigation, quarrels and problems/conflicts with people in authority. This will also affect the eldest son, and whether his room is one east side or not, you will see the eldest son to be impatient. This year the Rabbit is also greatly affected by this star.

Feng Shui Cure: Ksitigarbha Fireball (place this is in the East section of the house or room). For the people born under the sign of the Rabbit or the eldest son or if your room is in the East section of the house you can wear or carry the Ksitigarbha Fireball pendant/key chain. Wearing a Maitreya Buddha or Happy Fat Buddha pendant will also help.

The WEALTH AND MASTER PROTECTION PENDANT that I design also has the Ksitigarbha Fireball.

The Ksitigarbha Fireball is a pearl on the hand of Ksitigarbha Buddha that fires up when there are negative energies.

THE SOUTHEAST HAS THE FLYING STAR #4 (ROMANCE AND SCHOLASTIC STAR)

Effects: Romance luck is heightened if your room is on this side of the house. For single people, you might have the possibility of finding love. For partnered people, you might find your love getting more ‘fragrant’. However, for married couple the effect might be two fold. First, you might find yourself loving each other more deeply, but there might also be the possibility of a third party getting involved. It is also called Scholastic Star because it also has a good effect on the scholastic pursuits of a person. Meaning, students may become more studious, and professionals might find that it’s easier to understand documents. This star affects both the Dragons and the Snake.

Feng Shui Enhancer: For single person you can put a Rose Quartz Mandarin Ducks on your bedside. For married couple, you can hang the Double Happiness on your headboard. To safeguard yourself from a third party, tie an Amethyst Geode with Red String on the foot of your bed.

Additional Feng Shui Tip: Do not put any water feature on this side of the house because it might create a sexual scandal or infidelity problem. A water drainage is considered as a water feature.

THE SOUTH HAS THE FLYING STAR #9 (MULTIPLYING AND FUTURE PROSPERITY STAR)

Effects: Technically speaking, this is neither a good or bad star. The power of this star is to let you reap whatever you sow. This star basically multiplies whatever karma you accumulate. If you do more good things you’ll have more good luck in the future, but if you continue to do a lot of bad things, you multiply your negative karma as well. The Horse is also affected by this star thus it will be good if he/she can be more conscious of the things he/she does.

THE SOUTHWEST HAS THE FLYING STAR #2 (ILLNESS STAR)

Effects: As the name implies, this star causes illness and to some extent it can be fatal or terminal. Sometime, this star can also cause some accident that may render you invalid for a long time if not permanently.  For this year, this star also affects people born under the sign of the Monkey and Sheep.

Feng Shui Cure: Wulou (also spelled as Wu Lou) or Holy Gourd or Image of the Medicine Buddha. For people who stays in this section of the house or office, and for the middle sons and people born under the sign of the Monkey or Sheep it is advisable for them to wear a Jade Wu Lou pendant and/or a Medicine Buddha pendant (preferably with Mantra).

Just want to share that the WISH FULFILLING AND BUDDHA’S BLESSING MANTRA PENDANT has the image of the Medicine Buddha on the front and the Medicine Buddha’s Mantra at the back. This pendant was not available at that time I wrote about the 2012 Feng Shui forecast.

THE WEST HAS THE FLYING STAR #7 (VIOLENT STAR)

Effects: This star brings hostility and loss through robbery, theft, or even manipulation. This year it will also affect people born under the sing of the Rooster.

Feng Shui Cure: One of the following items – Image of Sun Wukong (aka Monkey God), Image of Kuan Kong (also known as Kuan Ti, Guan Ti, Kuan Te Ya, Guan Te Ya, Guan Gong), Image Elephant with Rhinoceros. For people who are staying on this side have the house or office, or for people born under the sign of the Rooster, it is advisable to wear an image of Sun Wukong, Kuan Kong, or a Mantra Pendant. The WEALTH AND MASTER PROTECTION PENDANT that has the image of THE GREAT SAGE, EQUAL OF HEAVEN – SUN WUKONG, and the WISH FULFILLING AND BUDDHA’S BLESSING MANTRA PENDANT that has the image of Kuan Kong are also advisable.

THE NORTHWEST HAS THE FLYING STAR #6 (HEAVEN’S BLESSING AND MENTOR STAR)

Effects: This star helps set the ‘tone’ of the year for people whose office, or room are in the Northwest side o the house or building. Meaning, if you continuously do more good the more blessed you’re going to be. This also means that if you’re Animal Zodiac luck is not so good like the Goat, you will continuously have help from Heaven (Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Deities, Immortals, or Saints). This also means that you’ll be lucky enough to have people who will help you achieve your goal.

Feng Shui Enhancers: Crystal Balls/ 6 White Jade tied with a Red String / Invite an image of Buddha or Bodhisattva or Deity or Immortal. People born under the sign of Dog or Pig who are affected by this star can enhance it by wearing an image of Buddha or Bodhisattva or Deity or Immortal.

THE NORTH HAS THE FLYING STAR #1 (WHITE VICTORY STAR)

Effects: This star or chi brings luck to your endeavors.

Feng Shui Enhancers: Victory Banner / Lung – Ta or Wind Horse / Water Feature in the North side unless its in the bedroom.

Note that the WISH FULFILLING AND BUDDHA’S BLESSING MANTRA PENDANT has the images of both the Victory Banner and Lung – Ta or Wind Horse.

THE NORTHEAST HAS THE FLYING STAR #8 (WEALTH STAR)

Effects:  It gives you abundance and to some a ‘bottomless’ pocket filled with money. This star is not just about money wealth but this is also about abundance.  This year people born under the sign of the Ox and Tiger are blessed by this star.

Feng Shui Enhancers: Faux Gold Coins or Bars or Ingots, Wealth Deity (Maitreya Buddha or Kuan Kong or Sun Wukong). The WEALTH AND MASTER PROTECTION PENDANT has the image of Sun Wukong, and the WISH FULFILLING AND BUDDHA’S BLESSING MANTRA PENDANT has the image of Kuan Kong.

This is from my personal collection. I wear this pendant everyday. In choosing an image of the Happy Fat Buddha to be worn as a pendant, always look for the face. Make sure that it has happy jolly face.

THE CENTER HAS THE FLYING STAR #5 (FIVE YELLOW STAR)

Effects: The 5-Yellow Star is the worst of all negative stars! It is said to bring 5 different kinds of misfortunes! What’s bad it runs in the center of the house or building.

Feng Shui Cure: AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE MOVE OUT FROM THIS SECTION OR DON’T USE THIS SECTION. You can also use the Five Element Pagoda (5-Element Pagoda), Kalachakra. For people who stays in this section of the house or building, as mentioned, please move out or if that is not possible, please wear the Five Element Pagoda pendant or a Kalachakra pendant. I just would like to share that THE WEALTH AND MASTER PROTECTION has the image of 5 – ELEMENT PAGODA, while the WISH FULFILLING AND BUDDHA’S BLESSING MANTRA PENDANT has the image of the KALACHAKRA.

There are different versions of the 5-Element Pagoda. However, personally the original version and a small one, I believe, is okay and powerful enough to counter the effects of the 5-Yellow Star.

The Kalachakra Symbol is a powerful protection symbol. It is actually ten syllable mantra compressed into one symbol. The mantra is HO HAM KSHAMALA VARAYA HUM PHAT. However, it is usually chanted with OM AH HUM thus making the complete mantra as OM AH HUM HO HAM KSHAMALA VARAYA HUM PHAT. It is because off this that I decided to put the symbolic script OM AH HUM on top of Kalachakra Symbol.

Additional note on the Flying Star #5 aka Five Yellow Star, while it’s the most dreadful star of all the negative star, for this year, because all the stars are in their original position, the Flying Star #5 will not have any bad effect on some signs, on the contrary, they will bring some wealth benefit to these animals signs.

They are the following:

MALE: 1941 and 1977 Snake, 1950 and 1986 Tiger, 1959 and 1995 Pig, 1968 and 2004 Monkey.

FEMALE: 1936, 1972 and 2008 Rat, 1945 and 1981 Rooster, 1954 and 1990 Horse, 1963 and 1999 Rabbit

In Feng Shui, enhancing the auspicious stars really encouraged, however, consultants and experts will stress that it’s more important to subdue the negative stars of the Flying Stars. If you’re on a tight budget, you need to subdue the negative stars first before enhancing the auspicious ones.

Other than the 9 Flying Stars, we also must take note and watch out for the Tai Suey (also spelled as Tai Sui) and the Three Killings, which is a directly translation of the Chinese words (Saam Sat or Saam Sart).

Technically speaking, they are not part of the Flying Stars, but we always take note of their position in relation to the Flying Stars because they are also very important in determining the luck of a person or place and it affects the outcome of the Flying Stars. Take for example this year. The SouthEast has the auspicious Flying Star #4, however, because of the Tai Suey, it might make it harder to get the luck of the said Flying Star, or it might even totally negate it.

Who is General Xu Dan?General Xu Dan is an historical person who became a Taoist immortal. He was in during the Han Dynasty in Ping Ling, Shaanxi, China. He is said to be a courageous, patriotic, generous and revered general who is skilled in martial arts. He is just one of the 60 Tai Suey Gods.

Who is General Xu Dan?
General Xu Dan is an historical person who became a Taoist immortal. He was in during the Han Dynasty in Ping Ling, Shaanxi, China. He is said to be a courageous, patriotic, generous and revered general who is skilled in martial arts. He is just one of the 60 Tai Suey Gods.

First, the Tai Suey. Taoists, where most of how we do Feng Shui originated, believes that a year is ruled by a certain God called Tai Suey or Tai Sui or Grand Duke in English. This year’s Tai Suey God is General Xu Dan. However, you have to understand a little about Taoist Gods for you to be able to understand why we have to be careful in dealing with the Tai Suey.

Taoist Gods are like humans with supernatural powers. They have magical and godly powers but they may also have human temperament and they also have characters and personalities. Meaning, they can get angry with our acts, they can be disturbed and get angry with us and thus render a punishment to us, or maybe the simple act of them getting irritated with us might create some misfortune. However, they can also be appease and happy with us and render us some good blessings, or again, the simple act of the Tai Suey getting happy with us will create some good fortune.

This year the Tai Suey is in the SouthEast. To be specific it flies in the SE3 section, but let us not bother ourselves with the specific degree, it’s enough to know that the Tai Suey is in the SE because it’s power will directly affect all the SE section. Be it either the SE section of the room, house, office, building, city, state, province, country, or world. If you notice the year 2012 brought a lot of tension in the China – Philippines relationship. That is because we are in the SE, and the disputed islands are in the SE, not to mention about the other countries involve in the disputed islands. This happened because the year the Tai Suey and the Five Yellow Star are in the SE. Having said that in the year 2012 might see some easing up of the tension because the Five Yellow is no longer in the SE, however, it might also create a war if the Tai Suey, who is still is the SouthEast is not appease.

In the same manner, everybody who is in the SE section of his or her house, room, office, or building will have to take some precaution. It’s very important that you don’t do any any renovations in this sector. If possible, do vacate this section. However, if that is not possible you can always put an image of a pair of Pi Yao in that section. For those who stay in that section of the house, or office, or building, it is also advisable to wear an image of the Piyao (also spelled or called as Pi Yao, Pixiu or Pi Xiu). This is because the Pi Yao or Pi Xiu appeases the Tai Sui or the Grand Duke.

Piyao4However, for this year I would like to stress that the Philippines is in a compromising situation because we are in the Southeast section of Asia. This implies that we might face some turbulent year. This might come in the form of war, political unrest, or natural calamities. Having the romance and scholastic star when taken in the perspective of the country might not be very good, because this might imply political extra – marital affairs, which means it can mean that the president might not know who are his real people and that some people in the cabinet or elected official might create some chaos. Also, some people might think that they are the best person for a certain position thus it might create political unrest or chaos because power grabbing. Furthermore,  the center portion of the country must take extra precaution because of the Five Yellow Star. As mentioned this is the worst star to have. Obviously, the center of the country is Visayas (Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao), this can mean that Visayas might be besieged by some natural calamities. While it’s difficult to say what are the natural calamities because Feng Shui is unable to determine the specific problem that might occur. However, if you look at the year’s Bazi or Paht Chee, although it’s a balanced chart, the strong elements are Earth, Water, and Wood. This MIGHT mean that the calamity might have something to do with these three elements. Meaning the natural calamity can be a drought, or a typhoon, or earthquake. I really can’t be sure which one but these three might be the possible effects of the combined effect of the Tai Suey or Tai Sui and the 5 Yellow Star.

Next is the Three Killings. Unlike the Tai Suey or the Five Yellow Star, which we must avoid, the 3 Killings is something that we must confront. Meaning, the best way to deal with it is to face the Three Killings and not turn our back against it. If the 3 Killings is not confronted then it can wreak three kinds if misfortunes to a person. The three misfortunes are accident, financial loss, and illness.

You can protect yourself from the Three Killings by facing the direction of the Three Killings that is in the East or staying in the East section of the house, this means, the people who are in the West are the ones who are directly affected by the 3 Killings. Another best way to deal and subdue the Three Killings is to place the image of the Three Celestial Guardians in the East section of the room, house, office, and building. Those who are staying in the West, East section of their house, office, building, room must wear the image of Three Celestial Guardians to protect themselves from the effects of the 3 Killings.

The 3 Celestials Guardians are the Fu Dog, Chi Lin (also spelled as Qi Lin or Chilin), and the Piyao (also called or spelled as Pi Yao, Pi Xiu, Pixiu).

Personally, I just wear my WEALTH AND MASTER PROTECTION PENDANT, which has the image of Sun Wukong. I’ve extensively talked about The Great Sage, Equal of Heaven, Sun Wukong. However, given that we don’t have enough time at that time I didn’t discuss one another aspect of Sun Wukong. The Monkey God, Sun Wukong, before he was subdued by Kuan Yin (Quan Yin), The Goddess of Mercy and by Shakyamuni Buddha was the only immortal who won a fight against all the Tai Suey. Thus aside from having the image of the Piyao, which is incorporated in the 3 Celestial Guardians, Sun Wukong is also a very good protector from the possible wrath of the Tai Suey. The WEALTH AND MASTER PROTECTION PENDANT is a pendant that has the image of Sun Wukong, a protector and wealth immortal/god, which is also a good cure against the Flying Star#7, and it also has the Piyao which is incorporated in the Three Celestial Guardians and it also has the image of the 5-Element Pagoda which is really good for the deadliest Flying Star the Five Yellow Star, and it also has the Ksitigarbha Fireball which is a cure against the Flying Star #3.

Medicine Buddha: A Healer, Provider, and Protector of Both the Spiritual and Physical Realm

Published Pebrero 20, 2012 by jptan2012

I’ve been debating whether I’m really ready to write about the Medicine Buddha, it feels like it’s such a heavy responsibility to write about the Medicine Buddha. Although I’ve been a devotee, worshiper, follower, and an indirect disciple of the Buddha of Medicine for many years now, I still discover new things about the Buddha of Medicine everyday!

One reason I included the Medicine Buddha in the WISH FULFILLING AND BUDDHA’S BLESSING MANTRA PENDANT is because I know how powerful the Medicine Buddha is. In fact, it is said that simply seeing the image of the Buddha of Medicine and His Mantra showers us with blessings. On top of that simply hearing Medicine Buddha’s name will also have some healing effect on the people who heard his name.

The Buddha of Medicine’s formal name is Bhaisajyaguru Vaidurya Prabharaja, which means Master of Healing, Azure Radiance or Master of Medicine and King of Lapis Lazuli Light. He is commonly called by Tibetan Buddhist as Bhaisajyaguru, which means Medicine Buddha.

Medicine Buddha is a fully enlightened being that’s devoid of any form of biased against living beings. Like Avalokitesvara or Kuan Yin, the Medicine Buddha is a Buddha filled with unlimited compassion towards us. The Medicine Buddha protects all living beings from attachment; hatred; and ignorance, which Buddhists text indicates are the main cause of illness. But more than that, the Buddha of Medicine also protect us from danger and negative energies or beings.

There are some slight differences in how the Medicine Buddha is depicted in Tibetan Buddhism and Chinese Buddhism, however, he is usually pictured as seated on top of a lotus wearing a traditional Buddha robe, his left hand holds a lapis lazuli colored jar of medicine nectar, while his right hand holds a stem of Arura (sometimes called Aruna – a special mystical plant that is said to bloom only once in every 3,000 years) while it’s resting on his knee.  In THE SUTRA OF THE MASTER OF HEALING or commonly called as the MEDICINE BUDDHA SUTRA He is also described as having a lapis lazuli-colored aura. It is because of this that he is also usually depicted in Tibetan Buddhism to be a blue or lapis lazuli-colored Buddha.

The Sutra of the Master of Healing also states that when the Medicine Buddha became a Bodhisattva, “he made Twelve Great Vows to grant all beings with whatever they pray for.”

In essence the 12 great vows indicates that Bhaisajyaguru or Medicine Buddha is a Buddha that heals us from physical, mental, and spiritual illness. Furthermore, it also indicates that the Medicine Buddha is a Buddha of Protection and Provider Buddha. In fact, the 3rd Vow specifically indicates material wealth.

Furthermore, if one is to fervently say the Medicine Buddha mantra and do the Medicine Buddha rituals, one is to be saved from the nine violent deaths. Again, in essence, the nine violent deaths refer to any form of death that may bring about extreme hardship.

The Medicine Buddha’s short mantra is TADYATHA OM BHEKANDZYE BHAKANDZYE MAHA BHEKANDZYE BHEKANDZE RADZA SAMUGATE SOHA.

Don’t be surprise to see or hear a slight variation of this mantra, which is TADYATHA OM BHEKANDZYE BHEKANDZYE MAHA BHEKANDZYE RADZA SAMUGATE SOHA.

Saying the Medicine Buddha Mantra is a very powerful tool to open ourselves to the blessings of the Buddha of Medicine. However, it is better if you can say 5 full mala (108 times per full mala) in a day. It will be more ‘potent’ if you are able to say the Medicine Buddha’s long mantra.

The Medicine Buddha’s long mantra is: OM NAMO BHAGWATE BHEKANDZYE / GURU BEDURYA PRABHA RADZAYA TATAGATAYA / ARHATE SAMYAKSAM BUDDHAYA / TADYATHA OM BHEKANDZYE BHEKANDZYE / MAHA BHEKANDZYE BHEKANDZYE / RADZA SAMUGATE SOHA.

Image of Medicine Buddha with Mantra. Seeing the image and symbolic script of the Medicine Buddha has the power to bestow upon us blessings from the Buddha of Medicine.

Like any mantra, seeing the symbolic script of the Medicine Buddha’s mantra is enough to grant some blessings to us from the Buddha of Medicine.

Inviting the image of the Medicine Buddha inside our home will bestows upon us the blessings stated in His vows.

Wearing His image and the symbolic script of the Buddha of Medicine’s mantra is like paying homage to the Medicine Buddha and also constantly tapping into His blessing. This is the primary reason why I included both His image and symbolic script in the WISH FULFILLING AND BUDDHA’S BLESSING MANTRA PENDANT,which incidentally has become quite popular amongst my readers because of the pendant’s effectiveness. I’ve been receiving a lot of emails how it helped them and I’ve blog about several of the personal testimonies.(Revised on Dec. 1, 2013).

Remember though that while the Medicine Buddha’s image and mantra has the power to grant us so much blessing from Him. It will be more auspicious if one can read His sutra everyday.

This is another version of the image of the Buddha of Medicine. Notice while He is not pictured year as a lapiz lazuli-colored Buddha, He still has the Buddha robe, the jar, and the plant.

Allow me to briefly discuss what is a sutra. Sutras are mostly canonical Buddhist scriptures of which are mostly recorded oral teachings of the Historical Buddha Sakyamuni or Gautama Buddha. A Sutra is like the Christian Bible, but the difference is for Buddhist, they believe that simply carrying a copy of a Sutra bestows upon us the blessings of the Buddha referred in the specific Sutra. Furthermore, reading a Sutra is like praying to the Buddha.

I always make it a point to read the Medicine Buddha Sutra at least once a day. I have a copy of the Medicine Buddha Sutra in my bag, in my car, and in my bedroom.

You can read the Medicine Buddha Sutra in English, but do try to get a miniature copy of the Sutra and carry it with you everyday.

Writing about the Medicine Buddha, His miracles, what He stands for without sharing His sutra is unacceptable. So please do allow me to share with you the Medicine Buddha Sutra as translated during the Torng Dynasty by Tripitaka Master Yiun-Tzorng.

THE MEDICINE BUDDHA SUTRA

Also Called: THE SUTRA OF THE MASTER OF HEALING

Full Title: SUTRA OF THE MERIT AND VIRTUE OF THE PAST VOWS OF MEDICINE MASTER VAIDURYA LIGHT TATHAGATA

Thus I have heard. At one time the Bhagavan was travelling through various lands to teach living beings. He arrived at Vaisali [“City of Extensive Adornments”] and stayed beneath a tree from which music resounded. With him were eight thousand great Bhikshus and thirty-six thousand Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas; also kings, ministers, Brahmans, lay disciples; gods, dragons, and the rest of the eightfold division; beings both human and non-human. The immeasurable great multitude respectfully surrounded him, and he spoke Dharma for them.

At that time, the Dharma Prince Manjusri, receiving the awesome inspiration of the Buddha, rose from his seat, bared one of his shoulders, knelt on his right knee, and inclining his head and placing his palms together, said to the Bhagavan, “World Honored One! We wish you would speak about such Dharmas as the Buddhas’ names, the great vows they made in the past, and their supreme merit and virtue, so that those who hear them will be rid of their karmic hindrances. This request is also for the sake of bringing benefit and joy to sentient beings in the Dharma-Image Age.”

The Buddha then praised the Pure Youth Manjusri: “Good indeed! Good indeed, Manjusri. With great compassion you now request that I speak about the Buddhas’ names and the merit and virtue of their past vows, for the sake of rescuing sentient beings who are bound up by karmic obstacles, and for the purpose of bringing benefit, peace, and joy to beings who live in the Dharma-Image Age. Listen attentively to my words and reflect on them extremely well, for I will now answer you.”

Manjusri said, “Please do speak. We are glad to listen.”

The Buddha told Manjusri, “Passing from here to the east, beyond Buddhalands numerous as the sand grains in ten Ganges rivers, is a world called ‘Pure Vaidurya’. The Buddha there is named Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, Of Proper and Equal Enlightenment, Perfect in Understanding and Practice, Well Gone One, One who Understands the World, Supreme Lord, Regulating Hero, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Bhagavan. Manjusri, when that World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, was practicing the Bodhisattva path in the past, he made twelve great vows that enable all sentient beings to obtain what they seek.

“The first great vow: ‘I vow that in a future life, when I attain anuttarasamyaksambodhi, my body will shine with dazzling light that will illumine measureless, countless, boundless worlds. My body will be adorned with the thirty-two heroic features and the eighty subsidiary characteristics, and I will enable all beings to become as I am.’

“The second great vow: ‘I vow that in a future life when I attain Bodhi, my body will be as bright and clear as vaidurya, flawlessly pure, vastly radiant, majestic with merit and virtue, abiding at ease, adorned with blazing nets brighter than the sun and the moon. Beings dwelling in darkness will be illuminated and will succeed in all their endeavors.’

“The third great vow: ‘I vow that in a future life when I attain Bodhi, will by means of limitless, unbounded wisdom and skill-in-means, enable all sentient beings to obtain an inexhaustible supply of material necessities so they are without the slightest want.’

“The fourth great vow: ‘I vow that in a future life when I attain Bodhi, I shall lead those sentient beings who practice deviant paths to reside in the Way of Bodhi and those who travel on the vehicles of the Hearer or Pratyekabuddha to abide in the Great Vehicle.’

“The fifth great vow: ‘I vow that in a future life when I attain Bodhi I shall enable limitless and boundless numbers of sentient beings who cultivate Brahma conduct within my Dharma to perfectly uphold the three clusters of precepts without exception. Should there be any violation, upon hearing my name, they will regain their purity and not fall into the evil destinies.’

“The sixth great vow: ‘I vow that in a future life when I attain Bodhi, if there are sentient beings whose bodies are inferior and whose faculties are imperfect, who are ugly, dull, blind, deaf, mute, deformed, paralyzed, hunch-backed, or afflicted with skin disease, insanity or various other sicknesses and sufferings, upon hearing my name they shall all become endowed with upright features, keen intelligence, and perfect faculties, and they shall be free of sickness and suffering.’

“The seventh great vow: ‘I vow that in a future life when I attain Bodhi, I shall cause sentient beings who are oppressed by many illnesses and who are without aid, without a place to turn, without a doctor, without medicine, without relatives, and without a family, who are poverty-stricken and filled with suffering to be cured of their sicknesses upon having my name pass by their ear, so they are peaceful and happy in body and mind. They will have a family and relatives, and acquire an abundance of property and wealth, and even realize unsurpassed Bodhi.’

“The eighth great vow: ‘I vow that in a future life when I attain Bodhi, if there are women who give rise to a deep loathing for their female body and wish to renounce it because they are oppressed and disturbed by the myriad sufferings of being female, upon hearing my name, they will be able to turn from women into men who are replete with male features and ultimately realize unsurpassed Bodhi.’

“The ninth great vow: ‘I vow that in a future life when I attain Bodhi, I Shall liberate sentient beings from the nets of demons and the bonds of external sects. If they have fallen into the dense forests of evil views, I shall lead them to have proper views and to gradually cultivate the Practices of Bodhisattvas so they will quickly realize unsurpassed, proper and equal Bodhi.’

“The tenth great vow: ‘I vow that in a future life when I attain Bodhi, I shall cause sentient beings who fall into the hands of the law and are bound, interrogated, whipped, fettered, imprisoned, sentenced to execution, or subjected to endless disasters, hardships, abuse, and humiliation so that they are tom by grief and distress and suffering in body and mind, to obtain, upon hearing my name, liberation from all worry and suffering by means of my blessings, virtue, and awesome spiritual power.’

“The eleventh great vow: ‘I vow that in a future life when I attain Bodhi, I shall cause all sentient beings who are so plagued by hunger and thirst that they create all kinds of bad karma in their quest for food, upon hearing my name and single-mindedly accepting and maintaining it, to be filled with delicious food and drink and afterward, by means of the flavor of Dharma, to settle in ultimate peace and happiness.’

“The twelfth great vow: ‘I vow that in a future life when I attain Bodhi, if there are sentient beings who are poor and without clothes so that day and night they are troubled by mosquitoes and flies, and by cold and heat, upon hearing my name and single-mindedly accepting and maintaining it, they shall obtain all kinds of fine and wonderful garments that accord with their tastes, as well as a variety of precious adornments, flower garlands, fragrant balms, and the enjoyments of music and various kinds of talents, so that all their hearts, delights will be fulfilled.’

“Manjusri, these are the twelve sublime and wonderful vows that the World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, One of Proper and Equal Enlightenment, made while cultivating the Bodhisattva Way.

“Moreover, Manjusri, if I were to speak for an eon or more about the great vows made by the World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, when he practiced the Bodhisattva Way and about the merit, virtue, and adornments of his Buddhaland, I could not finish.

“That Buddhaland has always been completely pure; there are no women, no evil destinies, and no sounds of suffering. The ground is made of vaidurya, with golden cords lining the roads. The city walls, towers, palace pavilions, studios, windows, and latticework are all made of the seven treasures. The merit, virtue, and adornments of this land are identical to those of the Western Land of Ultimate miss.

“Residing in that land are two Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas; the first is called Universally Radiant Sunlight, and the second, Universally Radiant Moonlight. They are the leaders among the immeasurable, uncountable hosts of Bodhisattvas in that land and will be the successors to that Buddha. They are able to maintain the precious treasury of the proper Dharma of the World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata. Therefore, Manjusri, all good men and women who have faith should vow to be born in that Buddha’s land.”

At that time, the World Honored One again spoke to the Pure Youth Manjusri saying, “Manjusri, there are living beings who don’t distinguish good from evil, who indulge in greed and stinginess, and who know nothing of giving or its rewards. They are stupid, ignorant, and lack the foundation of faith. They accumulate much wealth and many treasures and ardently guard them. When they see a beggar coming, they feel displeased. When they have to practice an act of charity that does not benefit themselves, they feel as though they were cutting a piece of flesh from their body, and they suffer deep and painful regret.

“There are other innumerable avaricious and miserly living beings who hoard money and necessities that they don’t use even for themselves, how much less for their parents, wives, or servants, or for beggars! At the end of heir lives, such beings will be reborn among the hungry ghosts or animals. If they heard the name of that Buddha, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, in their former human existence, and they recall that Tathagata’s name for the briefest moment while they are in the evil destinies, they will immediately be reborn in the human realm. Moreover, they will remember their past lives and will dread the sufferings of the evil destinies. They will not delight in worldly pleasures, but will rejoice in giving and praise others who give. They will not begrudge giving whatever they have. Gradually, to those who come to beg, they will be able to give away their own head, eyes, hands, feet, and even their entire body, to say nothing of their money and property!

“Moreover, Manjusri, there are beings who, although they study under the Tathagata, nonetheless violate the sila. Others, although they do not violate the sila, nonetheless transgress the rules and regulations. Others, although they do not violate the sila or rules and regulations, nonetheless destroy their own proper views. Others, although they do not destroy their own proper views, nonetheless neglect learning, so they are unable to understand the profound meaning of the sutras that the Buddha speaks. Others, although they are learned, nonetheless give rise to overweening pride, Shadowed by overweening pride, they justify themselves and disparage others, slander the proper Dharma, and join the retinue of demons.

“Such fools act on their misguided views and further, a cause immeasurable minions of beings to fall into pits of great danger. These beings will drift endlessly in the realms of the hells, the animals, and the ghosts. But if they hear the name of Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, they will be able to renounce their evil practices and cultivate wholesome Dharma, and thereby avoid falling into the evil destinies. If those who have fallen into the evil destinies because they could not renounce their evil practices and cultivate wholesome Dharmas, by the awesome power of the past vows of that Tathagata, get to hear his name for only a moment, then after they pass out of that existence, they will be reborn again as human beings. They will hold proper views and will be ever vigorous. Their minds will be well regulated and joyful, enabling them to renounce their families and leave the householder’s life-They will take up and maintain study of the Tathagatas, Dharma without any violation. They will have proper views and erudition; they will understand profound meanings and yet be free from overweening pride. They will not slander the proper Dharma and will never join the ranks of demons. They will progressively cultivate the practices of Bodhisattvas and will soon bring them to perfection.

“Moreover, Manjusri, if there are sentient beings who harbor stinginess, greed, and jealousy who praise them- selves and disparage others, they will fallinto the three evil destinies for countless thousands of years where they will undergo intense suffering. After undergoing intense suffering, at the end of their lives they will be born in the world as oxen, horses, camels, and donkeys that are constantly beaten, afflicted by thirst and hunger, and made to carry heavy burdens along the roads. Or they may be reborn among lowly people, as slaves or servants who are always ordered around by others and who never for a moment feel at ease.

“If such beings, in their former lives as humans, heard the name of the World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, and by this good cause are able to remember it and sincerely take refuge with that Buddha, then, by means of the Buddha’s spiritual power, they will be liberated from all sufferings. They will be endowed with keen faculties, and they will be wise and erudite. They will always seek the supreme Dharmas and encounter good friends. They will eternally sever the nets of demons and smash the shell of ignorance. They will dry up the river of afflictions and be liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, anxiety, grief, suffering, and vexation.

“Moreover, Manjusri, there may be beings who delight in perversity and engage in legal disputes, bringing trouble to others as well as themselves. In their actions, speech, and thought, they create ever-increasing amounts of evil karma. Never willing to benefit and forgive others, they scheme to harm one another instead. They pray to the spirits of the mountain forests, trees, and graves. They kill living beings in order to make sacrifices of blood and flesh to the yaksa and raksasa ghosts. They write down the names of their enemies and make images of them, and then they hex those names and images with evil mantras. They summon paralysis ghosts, cast hexes, or command corpse-raising ghosts to kill or injure their enemies.

“However, if the victims hear the name of Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, then all those evil things will lose their power to do harm. The evildoers will become kind to one another. They will attain benefit, peace, and happiness and no longer cherish thoughts of malice, affliction, or enmity. Everyone will rejoice and feel content with what they have. Instead of encroaching upon each other, they will seek to benefit one another.

“Moreover, Manjusri, there may be those among the fourfold assembly of Bhikshus, Bhikshunis, Upasakas and Upasikas, as well as other good men and women of pure faith, who accept and uphold the eight precepts either for one year or for three months, practicing and studying them. with these good roots, they may vow to be born in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss where the Buddha of limitless Life dwells, to hear the Proper Dharma, but their resolve may not be firm. However, if they hear the name of the World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, then as the end of their lives draws near, before them will appear eight great Bodhisattvas, whose names are: Manjusri Bodhisattva, The Bodhisattva Who Observes the Sounds of the World, Great Strength Bodhisattva, Inexhaustible Intention Bodhisattva, Jewelled Udumbara Flower Bodhisattva, Medicine King Bodhisattva, Medicine Superior Bodhisattva, and Maitreya Bodhisattva. Those eight great Bodhisattvas will appear in space to show them the way, and they will naturally be born by transformation in that land, amid precious flowers of a myriad colors.

“Or they may be born in the heavens due to this cause. Although reborn in the heavens, their original good roots will not be exhausted and so they will not fall into the evildestinies again. when their life in the heavens ends, they will be born among people again. They may be wheel-turning kings, reigning over the four continents with awesome virtue and ease, bringing uncountable hundreds of thousands of living beings to abide in the practice of the ten good deeds. Or they may be born as Ksatriyas, Brahmans, laymen, or sons of honorable families. They will be wealthy, with storehouses filled to overflowing. Handsome in appearance, they will be surrounded by a great retinue of relatives. They will be intelligent and wise, courageous and valiant, like great and awesome knights. If a woman hears the name of the World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, and sincerely cherishes it, in the future she will never again be born as a female.

“Moreover, Manjusri, when Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata attained Bodhi, by the power of his past vows he contemplated all the sentient beings who were undergoing various kinds of sicknesses and sufferings. Some suffered from diseases such as emaciation, atrophy, severe thirst, or yellow fever; others were harmed by paralysis ghosts or by poisonous hexes; some died naturally when young, while others experienced untimely deaths. He wished to dispel all their sicknesses and sufferings, and to fulfill their wishes.”

At that time, the World Honored One entered a samadhi called “extinguishing the suffering and distress of all beings.” After he entered this samadhi, a great light came forth from his flesh-cowl. From amid that light he proclaimed this magnificent dharani

Namo Bhagavate bhaisajya guru vaidurya prabha rajaya
Tathagataya
Arhate
samyaksambuddhaya
tadyatha
Om bhaisajye bhaisajye bhaisajya samudgate Svaha

After he had spoken that mantra from amid the light, the earth trembled and emitted great light. All beings, sicknesses and sufferings were cast off, and they felt peaceful and happy.

“Manjusri, if you see a man (or a woman) who is ill you should single-mindedly and frequently clean and bathe him and rinse his mouth-Provide him with food, medicine, or water that is free of insects, over any of which the dharani has been recited 108 times. After the sick person has taken it, all his sicknesses and sufferings will be gone. I f this person has a wish, he should recite this mantra with utmost sincerity. Then he will obtain whatever he wished for, and his life will be prolonged and free from illness-At the end of his life, he will be reborn in that Buddha’s land. He will become irreversible and will ultimately attain Bodhi. Therefore, Manjusri, if there are men and women who, with utmost sincerity, diligently worship and make offerings to Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, they should always recite this mantra and never forget it.

“Moreover, Manjusri, men or women of pure faith, who have heard all the names of Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, One of proper and Equal Enlightenment should recite and uphold them. In the early morning, after brushing their teeth and bathing, they should make offerings of fragrant flowers, incense, perfumed balms, and various kinds of music before an image of that Buddha. They should personally write out this Sutra or ask others to do so, and they should single- mindedly and constantly recite it. If they listen to explanations of its meaning from a Dharma Master, they should make offerings to him of all necessities, so that he is without the slightest want. In this way, they will receive the mindful protection of the Buddhas. All of their wishes will be fulfilled, and they will ultimately attain Bodhi.”

At that time, the Pure youth Manjusri said to the Buddha, ‘World Honored One, I vow that in the Dharma- Image Age, using various expedient means, I shall enable good men and women of pure faith to hear the name of the World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata. Even during their sleep, I will awaken them with this Buddha’s name.

“World Honored One, there may be those who accept and uphold this Sutra, read and recite it, explain its meanings for others, write it out themselves, or tell others to write it out. They may revere it by making offerings of various flowers, paste incense, powdered incense, stick incense, flower garlands, necklaces, banners, canopies, and music. They may make bags of five-colored thread in which to keep the Sutra. They may sweep clean a place and arrange a high altar on which to place this Sutra. At that time, the Four Heavenly Kings with their retinues and other innumerable hundreds of thousands of gods will come to that place to worship and protect it.

“World Honored One, it should be known that if, in the places where this precious Sutra circulates, people can accept and uphold it, then due to the merit and virtue of the past vows of that World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, because they have heard his name, none of those people will meet with untimely death. In addition, none of them will be robbed of his vital energy by evil ghosts and spirits. Those people whose vital energies have already been robbed will have their health restored, and they will be happy and at peace in body and mind.”

The Buddha told Manjusri, “So it is, so it is! It is exactly as you say. Manjusri, if there are good men and women of pure faith who wish to make offerings to that world Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, they should first make an image of that Buddha and arrange a pure and clean dais on which to place the image. Then they should strew all kinds of flowers, burn various incenses, and adorn the place with a variety of banners and streamers. For seven days and seven nights they should hold the eight precepts and eat pure food. Having bathed until clean and fragrant, they should put on clean clothes. Their minds should be undefiled, without thoughts of anger and malice. Toward all sentient beings, they should cherish thoughts of benevolence, peace, kindness, compassion, joy, giving, and equanimity.

“Playing musical instruments and singing praises, they should circumambulate to the right of the Buddha’s image. Moreover, they should recall the merit and virtue of that Tathagata’s past vows. They should read and recite this Sutra, ponder its meaning, and lecture on and explain it. Then they will obtain whatever they seek: Those who seek long life will attain longevity; those who seek wealth will gain wealth; those who seek an official position will obtain it; and those who seek a son or a daughter will have one.

“Moreover, if a person who suddenly has nightmare, sees ill omens, notices strange birds flocking together, or perceives many uncanny events in his dwelling can worship and make offerings of many fine things to that World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, then the nightmares, ill omens, and inauspicious things will disappear and will no longer trouble him.

“When a person is endangered by water, fire, knives, or poison; or finds himself on a steep cliff or in a dangerous place; or faces fierce elephants, lions, tigers, wolves, bears, poisonous snakes, scorpions, centipedes, millipedes, mosquitoes, gnats, or other frightful things, if he can single-mindedly recollect, worship, and make offerings to that Buddha, he will be liberated from all those frightful things. When other countries invade or when there are thieves or riots, if a person can recollect and worship that Tathagata, then he will be free of all of these as well.

“Moreover, Manjusri, there may be good men and women of pure faith who, all their lives, do not worship other gods, but single-mindedly take refuge with the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. They accept and uphold precepts, such as the five precepts, the ten precepts, the four hundred precepts of a Bodhisattva, the two hundred and fifty precepts of a Bhikshu, or the five hundred precepts of a Bhikshuni. Perhaps they have violated some of the precepts they received and are afraid of falling into the evil destinies. If they concentrate on reciting that Buddha’s name and worship and make offerings to him, they definitely will not be reborn in the three evil destinies.

“If there is a woman about to give birth who suffers great pain, if she sincerely recites his name and worships, praises, venerates, and makes offerings to that Tathagata, her sufferings will be dispelled. The newborn child will be sound and healthy, and will have upright features. Seeing him will make people happy. He will be keen and intelligent, peaceful and secure, and with few ailments, and no evil spirit will come to rob him of his vitality.

At that time the World Honored One said to Ananda, “The merit and virtue of the World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, which I have just extolled, is the extremely profound practice of all Buddhas. It is difficult to fathom and to comprehend. Do you believe it or not?

Ananda said, “Greatly virtuous World Honored One, I have absolutely no doubts regarding the Sutras spoken by the Tathagata. why? Because all Buddhas’ karmas of body, speech, and mind are pure-World Honored One, the sun and moon could fall, wonderfully High, the king of mountains, could be toppled or shaken, but the words of the Buddhas never change.

“World Honored One, there are sentient beings deficient in faith who hear about the extremely profound practices of all Buddhas and think to themselves,’ How could one obtain such supreme merit and benefit merely by reciting the name of a single Buddha, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata? ‘Due to this lack of faith, they give rise to slander. During the long night they lose great benefit and joy and fall into the evil destinies, where they wander ceaselessly.”

The Buddha told Ananda, “If these sentient beings hear the name of the World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, and sincerely accept and uphold it without any doubts, they cannot possibly fall into the evil destinies.

“Ananda, this is the extremely profound practice of all Buddhas which is difficult to believe and to understand! you should know that your ability to accept this comes from the awesome power of the Tathagata Ananda, alI Hearers, Solitarily Enlightened Ones, and the Bodhisattvas who have not yet ascended to the Grounds are incapable of believing and understanding this Dharma as it really is. Only the Bodhisattvas who are destined in one life to attain Buddhahood are capable of understanding.

“Ananda, it is difficult to obtain a human body. It is also difficult to have faith in and to revere the Triple Jewel. It is even more difficult to be able to hear the name of the World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata. Ananda, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata possesses boundless Bodhisattva practices, limitless skillful expedients, and immeasurably vast, great vows. If I were to speak extensively of those for an eon or more, the eon would soon end, but that Buddha’s practices, vows, and skillful expedients have no end!”

At that time within the assembly, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva named One who Rescues and liberates arose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt with his right knee on the ground, leaned forward with his palms joined together, and said to the Buddha, “Greatly virtuous World Honored One! During the Dharma Image Age, there will be living beings afflicted with various diseases, emaciated front chronic illnesses, unable to eat or drink, their throats parched and their lips dry. Such a being sees darkness gathering all around him as the signs of death appear. While lying in bed, surrounded by his weeping parents, relatives, and friends, he sees the messengers of Yama leading his spirit before that king of justice. Every sentient being has spirits that stay with him throughout his life. They record his every deed, both good and evil, to present to Yama, the king of justice. At that time, King Yama interrogates this person in order to tally his karma and mete out judgement according to his good and evil deeds.

“At that time, if the sick person’s relatives and friends, on his behalf, can take refuge with the World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, and request members of the Sangha to recite this Sutra, to light seven layers of lamp, and to hang up the five colored banners for prolonging life, then it is possible for his spirit to return. As if in a dream, the person will see everything very clearly himself.

“If his spirit returns after seven, twenty-one, thirty five, or forty-nine days, he will feel as if awakened from a dream and will remember the retributions that he underwent for his good and bad karma. Having personally witnessed the retributions of his own karma, he will never again do any evil, even if his very life is endangered. Therefore, good men and women of pure faith should accept and uphold the name of Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata and, according to their capability, worship and make offerings to him.”

At that time, Ananda asked the Bodhisattva who Rescues and liberates, Good man, how should we worship and make offerings to the World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata? And how should we make the banners and lamps that prolong life?”

The Bodhisattva who Rescues and Liberates said, “Greatly Virtuous One, if there is a sick person who wishes to be freed from sickness and suffering, for his sake one should accept and uphold the eight precepts for seven days and seven nights, and make offerings to the Bhikshu Sangha of as many items of food, drink, and other necessities as are in his power to give.

“During the six periods of the day and night one should worship, practice the Way, and make offerings to the World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata. Read and recite this Sutra forty-nine times, light forty-nine lamps, and make seven images of that Tathagata. In front of each image place seven lamps, each as large as a cartwheel. These lamps must be kept burning continuously for forty-nine days. Hang up five- colored banners that are forty-nine spans long. Liberate a variety of living creatures, as many as forty-nine species. Then the sick one will be able to surmount the danger and will not suffer an untimely death or be held by evil ghosts.

“Furthermore, Ananda, in the case of ksatriya princes who are due to be anointed on the crowns of their heads, at a time when calamity arises, such as pestilence among the population, invasion by foreign countries, rebellion within their territories, unusual changes in the stars, a solar or lunar eclipse, unseasonal winds and rains, or prolonged drought, those ksatriya princes should bring forth an attitude of kindness and compassion toward all sentient beings and grant amnesty to all prisoners. They should follow the above-mentioned methods to make offerings to that World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata. Due to these good roots and the power of that Tathagata’s past vows, the country will be safe and peaceful, the winds and rains will be timely, the crops will ripen, and all sentient beings will be blissful and free of disease. Within this country there will be no violence, nor any yaksas or other spirits that harms sentient beings, and all evil omens will vanish.

“The ksatriya princes who are due to be anointed on the crowns of their heads will enjoy longer lives and good health, and they will be at ease and free from illness. Ananda, if the queens, the princes, the ministers or court counselors, the ladies of the palace, the provincial officials or the common people suffer from diseases or other difficulties, they should also hang up five-colored spiritual banners, light lamps and keep them burning, liberate living creatures, strew flowers of various colors, and burn precious incense. Then those people will be cured of their diseases and relieved of their difficulties.

Then Ananda asked the Bodhisattva who Rescues and Liberates, “Good man, how can a life that has come to an end be prolonged?”

The Bodhisattva who Rescues and Liberates answered, “Greatly Virtuous One, did you not hear the Tathagata say that there are nine kinds of untimely death? That is why people are exhorted to make life-prolonging banners and lamps and to cultivate all kinds of blessings. Through such cultivation of blessings, they will be freed from suffering and adversity for the rest of their lives.

Ananda asked, “What are the nine kinds of untimely death?”

The Bodhisattva who Rescues and liberates said, “There may be living beings who, although not seriously ill have neither medicine nor a doctor to treat them, or else they meet a doctor who gives them the wrong medicine; consequently, they meet with an untimely death. Some of them believe in worldly cults, whose deviant teachers frighten them with false prophecies. Unable to set their minds at ease, they consult oracles to find out what calamities are in store for them. In order to propitiate the spirits, they kill various creatures. They pray to wang liang ghosts for aid and protection. Although they wish to prolong their lives, their efforts are to no avail. They deludedly hold to wrong beliefs and perverse views. Thus they meet with an untimely death and fall into the hells, never to come out. This is the first kind of untimely death.

“The second kind of untimely death is to be executed at the hands of the law. The third kind is to hunt for sport, to indulge in drinking and lust, or to become excessively dissipated, and then to be waylaid by non-human beings that rob one’s essence and energy. The fourth is to be burned to death; the fifth is to drown; the sixth is to be devoured by wild beasts; the seventh is to fall from a steep cliff; the eighth is to be harmed by poison, voodoo, evil mantras, or corpse-raising ghosts; the ninth is to die from hunger and thirst. These are the nine kinds of untimely deaths generally spoken of by the Tathagata. There are also innumerable other kinds which cannot all be spoken of here.

“Moreover, Ananda, King Yama keeps track of the karmic records of all the inhabitants of the world. If there are beings who are not filial to their parents, who commit the Five Rebellious Acts, who revile the Triple Jewel, who destroy the laws of the country, or who violate the precept of truthfulness, then Yama, the king of justice, examines and punishes them according to the severity of their offenses. Therefore, I encourage people to light lamps and make banners, to liberate beings and cultivate blessings so that they can overcome suffering and peril and forestall all disasters.

At that time, twelve great yaksa generals were present in the assembly. They were: General Kimbhiro, General Vajra, General Mekhilo, General Antilo, General Anilo, General Santhilo, General Indalo, General Payilo, General Mahalo, General Cidalo, General Caundhulo, and General Vikalo.

These twelve great Yaksa generals, each with a retinue of seven thousand yaksas, simultaneously raised their voices and addressed the Buddha, “World Honored One! Today, by relying on the Buddha’s awesome power, we are able to hear the name of the World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata. As a result, we are no longer afraid of the evil destinies. All of us are of one mind to take refuge with the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha to the end of our lives. We vow to support all living beings and to benefit them, so that they may live in peace and happiness. In whatever cities, villages, countries, or secluded forests this Sutra circulates, or wherever people accept and uphold the name of Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata and venerate and make offerings to him, we, together with our retinues, will guard and protect them, deliver them from all distress, and fulfill all their wishes. If a person wishes to dispel illnesses and difficulties, he should read or recite this Sutra and tie a five-colored thread into knots, forming the letters of our names. He should untie the knots when his wishes have been fulfilled.

At that time, the World Honored One praised the great yaksa generals, saying, “Good indeed, good indeed, mighty yaksa generals! All of you who want to repay the kindness of the World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, should always benefit beings and bring peace and happiness to them in this way.

Then Ananda said to the Buddha, “World Honored One, what should we call this teaching? How should we uphold it?”

The Buddha told Ananda, “This teaching is called, ‘The Merit and Virtue of the Past Vows of Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata.’ It is also called ‘Twelve Spiritual Generals’ Vows to Use Spiritual Mantras to Benefit Living Beings.’ It is also called ‘Eradicating All Karmic Obstacles.’ You should uphold it in this way.

When the Bhagavan had finished speaking, all the Bodhisattvas, Mahasattvas, great Hearers, kings, minister, Brahmans, laypeople, gods, dragons, yaksas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans, and non-human beings, and all the great assembly, on hearing what the Buddha had said, were greatly delighted. They received it with faith and respectfully practiced it.
