Basic Buddhism 7: Buddha Dipankara – A Powerful Protector, A Wealth Enhancing and Wealth Protecting Buddha, Patron Protector Buddha for Sailors or Seamen, and the Buddha Who Predicted the Enlightenment of Sakyamuni Buddha!

Published Setyembre 22, 2016 by jptan2012

A lot of you, especially if you are a regular reader of this blog, may know Amitabha Buddha, Sakyamuni Buddha / Shakyamuni Buddha, and Medicine Buddha. But not many will know Dipankara Buddha (also spelled as Dipamkara Buddha), however, serious students will most likely have an inkling as to which Buddha Dipankara is and or at the very least would have read about Him in some of the sutras. In fact, if you follow one of my suggestions to recite – a – sutra, especially “The Diamond of Perfect Wisdom Sutra” (also called The Diamond Sutra, The Vajra Cutter Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, The Vajra Sutra, The Vajra Cutter Sutra) mentions Buddha Dipankara several times. In the said sutra, Buddha Sakyamuni told his followers that Dipankara Buddha was His teacher in a previous life.

Buddha Dipankara is a very powerful protector, and is considered as the patron protector Buddha for sailors. According to my Guru Lama, Dipamkara Buddha is also the patron protector Buddha of all seamen and sea women. Practically anybody who works on a ship or in the sea. You have to note that during early times major traders or major trading involves sailor and the sea, thus Buddha Dipankara is considered as a powerful wealth enhancing and wealth protecting Buddha. Not only will he protect your wealth, but he will also help enhance your wealth luck.

But who is Dipankara Buddha?dipamkara-buddha1

Dipankara / Dipamkara Buddha is called as on the Buddha of the Past. Most of you would know that there have been a lot of Buddha in the past, and Buddha of the Present is Sakyamuni Buddha, and the Buddha of the Future is going to be Bodhisattva Maitreya (otherwise known as “The Happy Fat Buddha”). Dipankara Buddha is one of the Buddha of the Past, but since he plays a prominent role in the life and eventual enlightenment of the Buddha of the Present, the Historical Buddha – Sakyamuni Buddha, Dipankara Buddha is considered as THE Buddha of the Past in the Buddhas of the Three Times.

The Buddhas of the Three Times are: Dipankara Buddha (Buddha of the Past), Sakyamuni Buddha (Buddha of the Present), and Maitreya Buddha (Buddha of the Future).

Dipankara Buddha in Chinese is called 燃燈佛 (pinyin Rándēng Fo).dipankara-buddha-2

In Buddhism, it is estimated that Dipankara Buddha lives on Earth about one hundred thousand years ago. While there no archeological proof of Buddha Dipankara’s existence, he was prominently mentioned by Shakyamuni Buddha himself in several of the sutras.

Dipankara means “Lamp Bearer”, and he was accorded this name because he was the one who showed and predicted that Sakyamuni Buddha is going to be a Buddha, and this happened even before Sakyamuni Buddha was born in his latest physical body as Siddhartha Gautama.

Dipamkara Buddha is usually depicted as a sitting Buddha, although there a few one’s that shows him as a standing Buddha these are usually found in Laos, Nepal, and some parts of China. The most common images of Dipankara Buddha depict him together with Bodhisattva Manjushri and Bodhisattva Vajrapani. This is because it is stated in the sutras that Vajrapani Bodhisattva is also one of the most powerful protector amongst the Bodhisattvas and Bodhisattva acts as his ‘assistant’ (for the lack of an appropriate term) when it comes to protecting people, and Manjushri Bodhisattva because we all need wisdom even when we are protected. Another image of Dipankara Buddha is with Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (also known as Kuan Yin Bodhisattva, Guan Yin Bodhisattva, Kuan Shi Yin Bodhisattva, Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva) and still Bodhisattva Vajrapani. Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara is to represent compassion. If you notice Bodhisattva Vajrapani is present at both times because Vajrapani Bodhisattva is one of the most powerful protective Bodhisattva, but like Buddha Dipankara he is also great wealth enhancing Bodhisattva.

Both Dipankara Bodhisattva and Vajrapani Bodhisattva have very similar qualities that they usually go together. In fact, in making with what is regarded as the most powerful amulet in the Buddhist pantheon, the Vajrapani Ruel, the high-ranking monks usually also call on Buddha Dipankara (this was shared with me by my Guru Lama).dipankara-buddha

The secondary depiction of Buddha Dipamkara is with Buddha Sakyamuni (Buddha Shakyamuni) and Buddha Maitreya. This is to represent their stature as the Buddha of the Three Times.

One of the greatest manifestation of Buddha Dipankara is when he predicted the enlightenment of Buddha Sakyamuni, furthermore, it is said that he also predicted that Mahakasyapa and Ananda would be Shakyamuni Buddha’s acolytes.

To be able to tap into the power or energies of Buddha Dipankara, you can wear his image, prominently display his image in your home or office, and more importantly honor him by chanting Namo Rándēng Fo or Namo Dipankara Buddha. Do it 108x under deep meditation.

According to my Guru Lama, chanting the Namo Rándēng Fo and Om Vajrapani Hum while holding the Vajrapani Ruel will make the ruel more powerful.

Use Ruby As An Amulet to Ward Off Negative Energies!

Published Setyembre 12, 2016 by jptan2012

It’s been since awhile since I posted something. I was really busy the past few weeks and barely had time to write. I usually have ‘bank’ stories good up to 2 – 3 weeks, but all that was used up because of the tremendous amount of work I have to deal with.

Anyway, I’m glad that I’m able to write again. Although, the time of writing is usually not the day of posting these stories. Also I usually write several first before I post.

ruby-cabuchon

In choosing a ruby make sure it’s gem quality but it need not be high grade. High grade gem quality ruby are quite expensive.

But I’m going off track. Today, I would like to teach you on how to make a gemstone, in particular a ruby into an amulet that you can use to ward of negative energies, especially evil spirits and sorcery.

All you will need is a gem quality ruby. Have it set in gold or silver as pendant or as ring. If being set as ring make sure you can wear it on your ring finger or on your pinky. Make sure also that the ‘back’ side of the ruby is not covered, whether it is set as a ring or as a pendant.ruby-cabuchon2

Once set, properly clean it and then light an incense. If you have a Buddhist altar do it in front of a Buddhist altar, if not just do make shift altar, and have it face a clean wall.

Light nine incense sticks and call the following: NAMO AMITOFO 3X.

Then place the incense sticks on an incense holder or a bowl with salt or rice grains.

Then chant OM AH HUM 108X after which you blow on the ruby. This process will clean the ruby of all the negative energies.

Then chant OM AMI DEWA HRIH 1000x then blow on the ruby. While chanting put the ruby on the altar.

After chanting OM AMI DEWA HRIH. Place the ruby pendant or ring on the altar and leave it there.

Do the process for 7 days. After seven days, use a fine needle or a fine – point pen and inscribed on the ruby the Sanskrit OM AH HUM. Please see photo below.

Note that the ruby is a hard precious stone, so it is impossible to leave a mark. What you are doing rather and psychically imprinting the Sanskrit into the auric field of the ruby.

After that you can start wearing your ruby. Note that you will have to clean your ruby every month. You can do this simply by putting it on top of a rock salt / sea salt / Pink Himalayan salt for 7 hours to overnight. Then repeat the process of lighting the incense but this time doing it only once a month.

Note that this is a powerful amulet using the power of Amitabha Buddha and having it captured by the ruby. Buddha Amitabha’s color is red that is why ruby is the perfect stone for it. But remember use the gem quality one. If you can get a ruby shaped into an image of Amitabha the better it is.

So does this thing work? I’m sure.

I first suggested this to a reader who has been experiencing such a terrible bad luck due to some negative energies and it worked for her. However, I think, its real power was manifested when a relative of one of my staff is believed to have been suffering from some sort of witchcraft.

EY, is a 40 something widow. Her husband and her mother – in – law was involved in a car accident and both died at the same day. Philippine law states, whether there is a will or not, a child will definitely inherit an inheritance from his/her parents. In this case, EY’s husband, upon the death of his mom will inherit one of her properties. The mom left no will, and it is believe that they both died about the same time. In this case, since EY’s husband also passed away, his inheritance will then be inherited by his son and his wife. However, 3 of 5 siblings of EY’s husband contested the inheritance and said that their brother might have died ahead of their mom, therefore EY and her son should not inherit anything. EY contested this because obviously their argument was flawed. The case went to court, and that’s when she started having nightmares, seeing a black entity visiting her. Soon after that she started getting sick and having some skin rashes. Some might argue that it is due to stress brought about by the case against some of her in – laws that’s causing all this. That is certainly an argument, and that’s what I thought so too, but EY said that she and her son are already secured and they just want the inheritance as a matter of principle because her son deserves to get it. Add to that, her doctors seem unable to find an accurate diagnosis of what’s causing her illness.

On top of that, her husband’s other sister warned EY that the other siblings might do something nasty, and she firmly believes that one of her sister is involve in witchcraft as she boasted a number of time that she knows a powerful witch. Furthermore, even before it became known that EY was suffering from an unknown skin disease, this particular sister who would boast that she knows a powerful witch called up the other sister who is still friendly with EY and asked her whether EY is getting sick, and that if she gets sick it would do well if she just give up the inheritance so that she will get well.

When I heard the story, and after assessing that EY seems to be a very logical person, I decided to teach her the Ruby Amulet ritual. This was before the Vajrapani Ruel became available. EY made her own Ruby Amulet following my instruction, and within a month, all her illness was gone! Furthermore, she dreamt that the black entity also left her!

After a year, she and her son also got their inheritance!

Chant – A – Mantra (2): When You Need Compassion, Wisdom, and Power!

Published Hulyo 6, 2016 by jptan2012

A few months back, a reader who happens to be the CEO of one of a big company called me up because he is having some concerns. He said his company is in a crisis because the investor and the board of directors are not very happy on how he is running is company. They felt that the people of the company views him as a weak leader, and he himself has admitted that he is torn in becoming a stricter leader and a compassionate boss. However, being nice to the people of his company made them abuse him. Thus department heads and directors tend to do as they own thing. His position is in danger because of a possible hostile take over.

He is really worried because truth be told he is the one who put up the company, and to expand he has accepted investors who became part of the board. While he remains to be the majority stockholder, two shareholders sharing their share will overtake his share. And this is what his two brothers are planning to do, merge their share so that they can take the company from him.

To summarize his problem, he said he needs his investors and board of directors to be more compassionate to their employees, but at the same time, he said he needs enough ‘power’ to be able to bring his company back to it’s former glory, but at the same time wisdom to do it properly.

When I looked at his office I saw that there are some changes that has to be done, but he said he cannot do it immediately and while he got the Vajrapani Ruel, which is a very powerful amulet, we both felt that chanting some mantras will help.

I told him to chant the following mantras:

  1. MANTRA OF THE BODHISATTVA OF COMPASSION, KUAN YIN: OM MANI PADME HUM

    kuan Yin3 white

    Bodhisattva Kuan Yin

  2. MANTRA OF THE BODHISATTVA OF WISDOM, MANJUSHRI: OM A RA PA CHA NA DHIH.

    manjushri_buddhist_god_of_wisdom_eq03

Manjushri is a disciple of Sakyamuni Buddha. He is also a great Bodhisattva and is called Bodhisattva Manjushri.

  3. MANTRA OF THE BODHISATTVA OF POWER, VAJRAPANI: OM VAJRAPANI HUM

    vajrapani-6

Namo Vajrapani Bodhisattva / Bodhisattva Vajrapani

I will have to clarify that all Bodhisattvas embodies all these traits: Compassion, Wisdom, and Power. However, there are some traits that are more prominent in some because of the vows that a Bodhisattva made. Everybody who chants the mantra of Kuan Yin (also spelled as Guan Yin or Kwan Yin or Gwan Yin) would know that this is one of the most powerful mantra one can chant. But I thought letting him chant each of these mantra so that these traits that he needs for himself and for his company should become more enhanced.

He would chant the said mantra under deep meditation every morning, and all throughout the day, when he find himself idle (like when he is on the elevator or walking or stuck in traffic) he would alternately chant these mantras.

Several months after, he called me up to tell me that the Vajrapani Ruel and chanting the mantras created harmony and a more compassionate board and at the same time he felt he has made a more powerful and correct decisions to steer the company back to its older glory without ‘harming’ anybody.

Recite A Sutra (5): In Times of Conflict and Trouble Recite the Powerful Protector Sutra Called “THE GOLDEN LIGHT SUTRA”!

Published Hunyo 20, 2016 by jptan2012

Several years ago, kidnap – for – ransom was such a big problem in the Philippines, that when you randomly approach a Filipino – Chinese, that person will surely have a relative, or a relative of a relative, or a friend of relative, or a relative of a friend who have been a victim of kidnapping for ransom. It was such a big problem here in the Philippines, and several of kidnap victims ended being dead.

This must have been about ten to fifteen years ago.

One time I got a frantic call from a distant cousin. Apparently her father – in – law was kidnapped, and she was asking for help as to what she can do. What mantras to recite to ensure the safety of her father – in – law. I was at a lost and didn’t know how to help her and so I have to call my Guru Lama.

My Guru Lama then instructed me to ask my distant cousin to recite THE SOVEREIGN KING OF SUTRAS, THE SUBLIME GOLDEN LIGHT. The sutra is also known as the SUVARNAPRABHĀSA SUTRA, or THE KING OF GLORIOUS SUTRA, or THE SUTRA OF GOLDEN LIGHT, or what is more popularly known as THE GOLDEN LIGHT SUTRA.

THE GOLDEN LIGHT SUTRA is a long sutra but is regarded as one of the most powerful sutra by some lineages. I just would like to add a caveat that for me all sutras are equally powerful and important, it really just depends as to how you use it.

One of the more noteworthy themes of the sutra is the importance for leaders of the nations, or even businesses, or towns or cities to strive for good karma, because their karma is connected to the ones or to the nations that they lead. Because it is said their karma may lead to disaster or the blessing of an entire nation. Hence, the sutra also earned great importance or esteem as a sutra for protecting countries and is often suggested to be public read to ward off threats.

Even Lama Zopa Rinpoche gives high regard to this sutra and has numerously stated that when a person is in danger that person should recite this sutra together with THE DIAMOND OF PERFECT WISDOM SUTRA.

Because this sutra is long, if there is no emergency one can recite a few chapters at a time. However, in times of danger it is best to recite the sutra in one session.

As mentioned my Guru Lama that my cousin and her family should recite this sutra and that if possible request for a temple to chant it twice to thrice a day until they have ensured the safety of her father – in – law.

My cousin and her husband did just that. They even requested the temple of my Guru Lama to do the continuous chanting, w/c they have to make a monetary donation for the various important offerings. On the fourth day, the father – in – law rang their doorbell. They were all surprised because they haven’t paid the ransom because the ransom that they were asking for a too high and they’re unable to raise the amount yet. But from what they are able to gather from the father – in – law is that seeing his old age, he was 76 at that time, they have decided not to tie him and just lock him in a room. At first they were quite rude towards him, however, as soon as they locked him up inside a room, they’ve pretty much left him on his own. He was not released, he actually sort of escaped. I used the term “sort of” because what happened was one day he just heard a commotion, as if the people outside the room were in an emergency. After that he felt there was absolute silence and that nobody seems to be around. That’s when he tested the knob and was surprised to see that it was not locked from the outside. He then cautiously stepped out and soon realized that the kidnappers are all gone. When he step out, he debated whether to call his family or not, but like most Filipino – Chinese he erred on the side of being too cautious and decided to just try to go home on his own. He found out where he was, and because he was dirty, somebody took pity on him and decided to bring him home, but again; still fearful he said he’d just ask for money so he can take a cab. Surprisingly the person gave him more than enough money for him to go home. He then decided to take longer route and when he was sure that he was not being followed that’s when he asked to be drop off his house. They never found out who kidnapped him.

My cousin, her husband, and her in – laws, truly believed that it is because of the reciting of THE GOLDEN LIGHT SUTRA that freed the father – in – law.

Honestly speaking, although the sutra is quite long, I will always make it a point that this a sutra that I get to regularly recite at least once a week.

In fact, those of you who have the highly regarded and what is considered as the world’s most powerful amulet in the Buddhist pantheon called Vajrapani Ruel, might be happy to know that THE GOLDEN LIGHT SUTRA talked about Bodhisattva Vajrapani extensively. It is this sutra that called Bodhisattva Vajrapani as the “great general of Yakshas”. Thus when you have the Vajrapani Ruel and you recite this sutra, it will enhanced the power of your Vajrapani Ruel thus making it more effective.

Furthermore, other than Vajrapani Bodhisattva, THE GOLDEN LIGHT SUTRA talks about various others Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. But we should not be deluded into believing that this sutra is only for protection in times of trouble and conflict. Because according to Lama Zopa Rinpoche is practically for everything even for financial luck, peace, harmony, etc. Allow me to directly quote him here:

At the beginning of the Sutra of Golden Light, Buddha Shakyamuni, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Fully Enlightened, calls to anyone experiencing misery and affliction, bad health, poverty, loss, abuse, ill will, fear, nightmares, or other harms. He says to make the mind virtuous and to come and listen.

This “King of Glorious Sutras,” contains everything needed, from daily happiness to complete enlightenment. It contains a heart-rending practice of confession and rejoicing, profound teachings on dependent arising, reliable assurances of protection, guidelines for ideal government, and awe-inspiring stories of the Buddha’s previous lives, in which the Buddha shows how, even before he had completely eliminated the delusions, he liberated countless beings from the ocean of suffering through compassion and personal courage.

See how powerful it is. Hope this sutra brings you blessings and protection like it did to so many people. I will share other stories about this sutra in the future. In the mean time you can download the sutra by clicking here: The Golden Light Sutra.

Note: Light an incense while reciting this sutra will help double the merits of the act.

But remember, as always when reciting a sutra one has to chant 3x NAMO FUNDAMENTAL TEACHER SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA

Followed by the Sutra Opening Gatha:

The Dharma Infinitely Profound and Subtle

Is Rarely Encountered Even In A Million of Kalpas

We Are Now Able to Hear, Recite, and Follow It

Recite A Sutra (4): Attract Auspiciousness and Cure Bad Feng Shui With The ‘Noble Stack of Auspiciousness Sutra’!

Published Abril 23, 2016 by jptan2012

All sutras are powerful, but admittedly I am quite partial towards the sutra that I’m sharing with you today. I’m talking about the Noble Stack of Auspiciousness Sutra.

Why?

Not only because it is a powerful sutra, but more than that the Noble Stack of Auspiciousness Sutra is a sutra that proves Feng Shui really exist in Buddhism. The truth is there are some lineage of Buddhism who downplays Feng Shui, in particular, Zen Buddhism, they will tell you that Feng Shui is ‘useless’. I’m putting it in quotation marks because what they will usually say that Feng Shui is impermanent, thus they believe that one should not practice it. Yes Feng Shui is impermanent, anything that changes is impermanent and I totally understand where that belief is coming from, but I believe that Feng Shui should not be practiced just because it is impermanent. In fact, it is part of the Tibetan Buddhism and Pure Land Buddhism. I will discuss about this topic more in my succeeding post. However, what I want to say here is that the Noble Stack of Auspiciousness Sutra is one sutra that shows Feng Shui is quite important.

In the sutra, as you read you will see it in details, Shakyamuni Buddha when he still has His human body talked about inauspiciousness brought about by bad directions, bad funeral site, etc. This obviously indicates Feng Shui.

Anyway, I will discuss about that in detail in my succeeding posts. For now, I would like to share that reciting this sutra will surely bring about a lot of auspiciousness to the person reciting it. Furthermore, it is also quite important to recite this sutra when you moved in to a new house or office or when you are experiencing a spade of bad luck. On top of that, if you think a place has bad Feng Shui constantly reciting this sutra in that place will help temper the negative effects of the bad Feng Shui.

I also would like to draw your attention to the fact that in this sutra, only three Bodhisattvas were considered more than auspicious, and they are Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara (also called or spelled as Kuan Yin, Kwan Yin, Gwan Yin, Guan Yin) who is described as auspicious and compassionate, Bodhisattva Majushri who is described as auspicious and wise, and Bodhisattva Vajrapani who is described as auspicious and powerful. This is further indication that Vajrapani Bodhisattva, whose extension power is found with the world’s most powerful amulet – Vajrapani Ruel – is indeed a very powerful Bodhisattva. But I’m getting off track here but I thought this is an information that I should share with my regular readers, especially those who have the Vajrapani Ruel.

You can download the The Noble Stack of Auspiciousness Sutra.

But remember, as always when reciting a sutra one has to chant 3x NAMO FUNDAMENTAL TEACHER SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA

Namo Sangharama Bodhisattva: A Bodhisattva that Protects, Grants Wealth Blessings, Protects Marital Relationships and is Better Known as Kuan Kong

Published Nobyembre 18, 2014 by jptan2012

kuan kong 3The first time I wrote about Kuan Kong was last February 15, 2012. Since then I have not written much about him except for a few mention in some blog articles and about the boy who is believed to have been saved by Kuan Kong from his death when Typhoon Yolanda (with international name Haiyan) hit the Philippines.

After almost 2 years, I am once again writing about Him because I feel that not to write about Him more is a great injustice to Kuan Kong (also called or spelled as Guan Gong, Guan Yu, Kuan Yu, Kwan Kong, Kwan Ti, Kuan Ti, Guan Ti, or Guan Sheng Di Jun).

Guan Yu as he is known as a person died in 220, but his date of birth is unknown. He actually served as a general with Liu Bei, as Eastern Han Dynasty warlord. It must be noted that although they’re called warlords it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re evil; we have to understand that during those time it is the norm.

Guan Yu is one of the best-known Chinese historical figures throughout East Asia that has slowly taken on the world. As mentioned in my last post about Guan Yu or Kuan Kong, the web is a treasure trove of stories about his life. However, I don’t think anyone alive now can actually say for certain what are the most accurate facts and what are the embellishments because people by nature loves to romanticized a person they admire or idolized. However, please be assured that in the bits and pieces of his life that I will share here in this post I will share with you what are the stories that historically proven and accepted. In the absence of that ‘confirmation’, it doesn’t mean that it didn’t happen, but it only means that it may be not very accurate or that it is widely accepted but may be argued by some historians. kuan kong 2

What is not arguable here is Guan Yu is so much loved and so much respected that he is the only person who became a deity or Bodhisattva in three of the major oldest religion in China. Although there has been a lot of crossovers between Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, like Kuan Yin being a high goddess in Taoism, and giving rise to the unofficial religion called Chinese Buddhism, Guan Yu or Kuan Kong or Guan Gong, is the only historically human being who became a significant deity or lord in Taoism, a significant Bodhisattva in Buddhism, and a significant god in Confucianism.  Not to mention that he is also a prominent figure in Chinese folk religion.

Guan Yu is known for being a very good general. In fact, he won most of his wars with as little bloodshed as possible. He doesn’t believe in killing all the enemies. When he wins a war he will not take unnecessary prisoners, so the prisoners that he takes are only the high officials and he would always treat them with utmost humanity. Those soldiers who yield to him are given the choice to join his troops or leave and go home to their family. His wars always has a cause and he will only resort to go to war only if he is absolutely sure in his heart that the war will in the end will serve greater good and is only the last resort. This kind of attitude runs akin to the Buddhist teaching that states one cannot judge the means but one can only judge what’s inside the heart of a person. I hope this will not be taken out – of – context, but in a simplistic point of view, what it means is that at the end some means might be seemingly evil or bad but in the end it is the deepest intent of the heart of the person whether the act is really evil or not. I would like to expound on this teaching a little further and leave Guan Yu’s story for a while in the next paragraph.

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama once shared a story. A guy went on a trip via a ship. While he was onboard the ship he came across a plot by two men to plant a bomb on the ship and kill all the people onboard as an act of terrorism. The man went to inform the captain, but after some reluctant investigation, for they didn’t believe him, it was said that there was no plot at all. Still he did his best to make people believe him, however, nobody believed him. He was totally left in despair as to how to save the people on board. As the time of doom arrives he decided to confront the two terrorists, his first approach was to talk them out of what they plan to do, but because the terrorists perceived that he is a threat to what they have set out to do they manhandled him, brought him to their cabin to either bound him there or kill him. All throughout the man never feared for his life but he feared for the life of the hundreds of people onboard the ship. He knows that he has to do something otherwise all the people on the ship will perish, but he also knows that it is not only the people onboard the ship that will perish but their family will also grieve for them. He was left with no choice and although he knows what he needs to do is wrong, in the end he was left with no choice but to fight the two terrorists and hurt them enough to restrain them. In the process, he accidentally killed both terrorists. There is another version of the story that says he also died with them, an act of suicide that also killed the other terrorist. Whatever the version of the ending the message is quite clear. Killing and suicide are both considered graved sin one that causes eons of negative karma, but the man was reborn as a high lama that is because according to the Dalai Lama, while the act itself alone is pure evil, the deepest intent, meaning deep in his heart, it was not simply to kill the two men, but to save hundreds of live and prevent several more the pain of grief. Superficially speaking this is a Buddhist concept that can be easily abused. But let us always remember that in the end it is not our fellowmen’s judgment that we must be wary of but our own deep conscience and that of karma.

kuan kong 4Going back to Guan Yu, one of the most famous verified story about him was when he took a hit from an arrow. It was a poisoned arrow and the doctor needs to clean his wound right to the bone. He wants to administer a strong alcohol (medicinal wine) to Guan Yu so that he won’t feel the pain, or at the very least he will be able to tolerate the pain as he would open and clean it down to the bone. Guan Yu refused to take the alcohol because he believes taking the alcohol will totally cloud his mind. Please note that at this point he is already showing some signs that his belief are leaning towards Buddhism. For if he were purely Taoist, it would have been fine for him to drink the medicinal wine even if it clouds his mind. For Buddhism, medicinal wine are allowed as long as it doesn’t cloud your mind so much that you are unable to control it. What happen next are two different versions of the story. One version states that he didn’t take the wine but instead went into deep meditation by concentrating on a single matter and in his case he choose to play Chinese chess with himself, and that he totally didn’t feel any pain, even if the doctor was scraping his wound down to the bone to make sure there are no poison left. The other version is that he felt the pain but still bravely faces it rather than cloud his mind with the effects of medicinal wine. Personally, I’m unable to make a decision, which is true, because if he is a practicing Taoist or Buddhist, and if his practice is really deep already, being ‘operated’ without pain relievers, in his case medicinal wine is not impossible. But the point of importance here, is that he already showed signs of refusing wine for the reason that he doesn’t want to cloud his mind, which is a Buddhist teaching. I raise this point because it is later on very important part of his life for him to be accepted as a Bodhisattva in Buddhism. This is important because historians are not clear as to what his religious belief was.

Guan Yu is a celebrated war general, and he always wins a war until towards the end of his life. He was part of the ruling dynasty, but towards the end he notice that his leader is becoming selfish and goes to war not because it is the last resort but he simply wants to conquer more lands and wealth. He decided to break away and vowed to protect the weak. He became a minority, and it is said that in the last war he went to he already knew that he and his troops are going to be betrayed and that he will die, he figured this out when an oracle was done, something that is usually done during his time. They usually consult either a Taoist oracle or a Buddhist oracle to determine whether they should go to war. The oracle showed that he will lose the war and that he will die, but he has to go to this war for a long term good. So he went to war and true enough he and his family and closest friends were betrayed and they were captured.

His ‘archenemy’ who used to be his leader has great respect for him that he refused to kill Guan Yu, something that was totally unacceptable during those times. Not killing Guan Yu is a sign of great weakness and will render him a coward and a lame leader. To avoid killing Guan Yu and simply make him a prisoner for life he has show the people is of poor moral and a scum that needs to suffer imprisonment for the rest of his life.

As a ploy he decided to put Guan Yu in a cell full of women. Unverified stories states that Guan Yu was put amongst the wives and daughter of his friends. But Guan Yun didn’t give in to carnal desires instead he made sure that he became protector of said women. Seeing that this ploy didn’t worked. Guan Yu was then transferred to a better prison and he was imprisoned with naked virgin courtesans and was given permission to deflower them, still Guan Yu didn’t give in to carnal desire, instead he took time out too teach them to read. At the end, he was reluctantly sent to his death. kuna kong

Verified reports states that several weeks before his death, his consciousness would always appear to a monk. And he would ask him to read different sutras so that he will reach enlightenment. This is an important factor in the story and is largely the reason why he became a Bodhisattva. The question is whether his Bodhisattvahood was largely due to a testimony of a single monk? The answer is no, because while the testimony of this monk was the one that is largely popular, there are other numerous both verified and unverified reports that says that before his death his consciousness would appear to different monks to ask for a sutra reading. Also, all these monks so a vision that Guan Yu received enlightenment. In fact, some of these testimonies where not found out until the death of some the monks who saw these visions, for they were never shared but written in their testimonies or orally shared to their students or disciples.

In my last post, I already made mention of the fact that Kuan Kong or Sangharama Bodhisattva is a wealth god and a protector, however, what most people don’t know is, and I myself has temporarily forgotten about this is that he is also a Bodhisattva that helps safeguard marital relationships. This is because in his lifetime, Guan Yu, exhibited extreme loyalty and faithfulness to his wife. He never took on a concubine, or visited courtesan houses, although it was a norm during his time.

kuan kong pendantTo honor and pay homage to Sangharama Bodhisattva, it is highly recommended for you to get his image. Please choose the one that has a beautiful fierce face. Wearing a pendant of his image is also highly recommended. I myself decided to get more Kuan Kong pendant, and of course, Kuan Kong or Sangharama Bodhisattva is one of the Bodhisattva that I featured in my Wish Fulfilling and Buddha’s Blessing Mantra Pendant.
