The Curious Case of A Foreign Pirate that Became a Filipino Hero: The Other Side of the Story of Lapu Lapu and Ferdinand Magellan!

Published Mayo 3, 2017 by jptan2012

Lapu Lapu is considered as the Philippine’s first hero. All Filipino children knows of the story on how Lapu Lapu as a native defended the country or at least Mactan against the Portuguese explorer who organized the Spanish Expedition, which lead him ‘discovering’ the Philippines. It is said that in the Battle of Mactan, Magellan and his men arrived with the intent of colonizing and claiming Mactan, but Lapu Lapu, who is now regarded as the first Filipino hero resisted it and in the process killed Magellan.

Then after the Battle of Mactan, we don’t know much anymore as to what happened to Lapu Lapu, only that he was regarded as the first Filipino to fight the Spanish conquistadors!

In my recent trip to Cebu, I heard another version of the story, something that is not entirely foreign to me because I have heard about it before and only this time I’m hearing it from the mouth of a tourism officer from the Department of Tourism. This person is also a historian.

It does make me wonder as to why we don’t know much about Lapu Lapu only that he killed Magellan and he refuse to show the body of Magellan so it was buried somewhere in the shore of Mactan.

Well, this is the other version of the story. Whether this is true or not, I leave it up to you to decide.

Lapu Lapu is not a Filipino; in fact, it is believed that he is a pirate from Borneo who ‘conquered’ Mactan. When Ferdinand Magellan he was truly an ambassador of goodwill, and this is why a Rajah (forgot the full name), yes Cebu was inhabited by Muslims and ruled by Rajahs, seeked Magellan’s intervention for Lapu Lapu was ruling the island with so much cruelty. The rajah was from the main island.

It is said that Ferdinand Magellan agreed to intervene and sent an emissary to see Lapu Lapu, and Lapu Lapu agreed to meet with him. So Magellan went off by boat with only a crew of 50 men on board, for it was a short trip from the main island to Mactan. When they got there they found out that the water was shallow and it was also low tide, so Magellan and his men went on foot. It was a long walk from where they have to leave their ship or boat. They need not worry about anything because it was a friendly visit and Lapu Lapu has send off word that they will be received in a amiable manner.

So 50 men including Magellan went off by foot, it was a long walk so they were tired by the time they reached the shore of Mactan, but little do they know that Lapu Lapu has send off approximately a thousand of his men (I personally think that this number could have been exaggerated) and ambushed Magellan and his men. It was said that Magellan requested his men to retreat, but they decided to stay with him. Naturally, tired and unfamiliar with the territory and caught by surprised, Magellan was killed together with his men.

So who killed Magellan? Some historians believe that it was not Lapu Lapu who killed Magellan, and that it was one of his right hand men who killed Magellan. Lapu Lapu simply took the credit by virtue of being the leader of the tribe. But he was the one who ordered that the body of Magellan be buried right away so that Magellan’s friends and people cannot claim his body. He then has a tattoo of Magellan printed on his body as a sign that he conquered a ‘warrior’.

So what happened to Lapu Lapu, while was their no more word about him after the Battle of Mactan? Some historians believes that after the Battle of Mactan, an uprising from the other Rajah’s brewed against Lapu Lapu, and so Lapu Lapu fearing for his life left Mactan and went back to Borneo. He brought with him all his family and his whole tribe. So to this day there is no trace of a descendant of Lapu Lapu in Mactan or anywhere else in the Philippines.

So why am I writing this because it has nothing to do with Feng Shui? It is because this serves a prelude to my next post about the statue of Lapu Lapu that might have caused some misfortune in the city of Lapu Lapu. But other than that, it does serves an interesting alternative story about why we don’t know much about the first Filipino hero, in fact, we seem to know more about Ferdinand Magellan the alleged conquistador.

Chant – A – Mantra (7) & Recite – A – Sutra (8): Additional Protection from the Double Illness Star and Double Wu Wang in the Northeast!

Published Nobyembre 4, 2016 by jptan2012

Any Feng Shui enthusiasts and Feng Shui students would have known by now that the month of November (starting on November 7, 2016 – December 6, 2016) a lot of us will have to be very careful and be ready for double negative energies brought about by the combination of the Annual Flying Stars and Monthly Flying Stars.

Note: To understand this post better you can read the first two posts about it. 1. Double Wu Wang Whammy for People Born in the Year of the Ox and Tiger this November. / 2. Is the Double Wu Wang in the Northeast this November Fatal?

First, the most dreadful star (#5 Flying Star / Wu Wang / Five Yellow Star / 5 – Yellow Star) is doubled in the Northeast this month, which means people born under the year of the Ox and Tiger, Middle Sons (regardless of age, regardless whether they are married or single and whether they still live with their parents or not), and people staying in the Northeast (bedroom, office or even if your house is in the Northeast of the village or subdivision) and people whose house or office door faces the Northeast are all affected by the Double Wu Wang. This is the most dreadful star in the Flying Star formula, and all Feng Shui experts or Feng Shui consultants caution us about this, and having it doubles this year in the Northeast brings tremendous stress to those who have to deal with it. Those who have to deal with it are the people I mentioned above.

But at the same time, the #2 Flying Star, which is known as the Illness Star, a star that causes not only grave illness but also serious accidents that may lead to long term illness or death is also doubled this month. We are all susceptible to this, but people who are affected by the Wu Wang, as mentioned above, are doubly affected. As a precaution, it is highly advisable for you to wear the Illness Suppression Amulet if you have it.

For those who are affected by the Double Wu Wang in the Northeast can wear the Vajrapani Ruel and a gold 5 – Element Pagoda (Five Element Pagoda) pendant, and a gold Kalachakra pendant. Carrying or surrounding yourself with Traditional Sutra Amulets like THE MEDICINE BUDDHA SUTRA or THE SUTRA ON THE PAST VOWS OF EARTH STORE BODHISATTVA or THE DIAMOND SUTRA will also greatly help and offer much protection.

In my earlier post about the same topic, I also said that this is the time for one to rely and have faith on prayers. For Catholics you can do your novenas or pray your rosary. For Christians and Muslims you can pray to your God and have faith in Him. For Taoist, you can ask special protection Fu from your Taoist priest. For Buddhist and those who would be willing to practice how Buddhist protect themselves now can do the following suggestions found below.

Go to the temple and light incense everyday.

Go to the temple and bow to the images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas everyday.

Donate to the poor or who are in need with utmost sincerity.

Chant the following mantras (minimum) 108x a day everyday:

  • Mantra of Amitabha Buddha: OM AMI DEWA HRIH
  • Mantra of Medicine Buddha: TADYATHA OM BHEKANDZYE BHEKANDZYE MAHA BHEKANDZYE RADZA SAMUGATE SOHA

  • Mantra of the Protective Deity Kalachakra: OM AH HUM HO HAM KSHAMALA VARAYA HUM PHAT

You can also Recite the following Sutras as often as you can:

Invite Wonderful Blessings in Your Life by Reciting a Sutra!

Published Abril 1, 2016 by jptan2012

I am a believer of the power of amulets; needless to say my favorites are the very powerful Vajrapani Ruel(1) and Surangama Mantra Amulet(1). The numerous personal testimonies found on this blog is testament as to how powerful wearing amulets are, especially the Vajrapani Ruel(2) which has showered a lot of people who has requested it with tremendous wealth luck, money luck, and financial luck. Wearing an amulet is like carrying an extension of a Buddha or Bodhisattva’s energies. However, the sad truth is not everyone will be able to avail of a powerful amulet. But of course, there are other ways of tapping into the power or energy of a Buddha or Bodhisattva.

In the past, I have written a lot about the importance and benefits of chanting a mantra, and a lot of you (my readers) has emailed me or texted me or personally shared with me the testimonials of how chanting a mantra has helped in your personal life or even in your career.

Chanting a mantra, for me, is one of the most powerful ways to connect and tap into the energies of the Buddhas or Bodhisattvas. Some people might say it is not as effective as having to wear an amulet like the Surangama Mantra Amulet(2) or Vajrapani Ruel(3). Well, there is truth to this, but I believe in some ways, chanting a mantra may be even more effective if we are able to chant it under deep meditation. How deep? To the level that you are no longer conscious of you’re surrounding. If we are to chant in that level of deepness, I would say it is even more effective than wearing an amulet. But whether we are able to chant it deeply or not, it is bound to have some effect, and we will definitely feel its power.

However, today I would also like to add and discuss the importance of reciting a sutra.

Amitabha_Sutra_bookA sutra or sutras are Buddhist teachings, usually ones that has been personally taught by Shakyamuni Buddha when He still have a physical body. Although, there are some sutras that was taught by different patriarchs. One of the most famous one is the 6th Patriarch Hui Neng. His sutra is called THE PLATFORM SUTRA OF THE SIXTH PATRIARCH. On my future posts I will discuss more about the sutra of the patriarchs. But for now let us focus on the sutra of the Buddha Shakyamuni.

I have mentioned before that mantras are powerful words lefts to us by the Buddha himself for us to chant to evoke some power. These mantras are usually found within a sutra. And as mentioned a sutra is a teaching taught by Shakyamuni (also spelled as Sakyamuni) Buddha. In effect, even when it has undergone a translation, it is still considered the very words of the Buddha.

Basically, a sutra is a teaching of the Buddha, and while the Christians and Muslims has the Bible and Koran (respectively), which is a compilation of different ‘books’, in Buddhism the sutras are not compiled. But there are a lot of different sutras.

As I said, a sutra is the Buddha’s teaching, within them are found the different mantras. But more than that, simply reciting (reading it loudly) carries a lot of blessings with it. As to what type of blessings it carries depends on the sutra being read, and these blessings are usually mentioned within the sutra itself. So reading a sutra doesn’t only bring about knowledge about Buddhism, but it also brings about blessings and this is another form to tap into the power or energies of the Buddha or Bodhisattvas.

But there are important things that one should remember when you got hold of a sutra. They are the following:

  1. You should treat it like a holy object only because it is a holy object.
  2. Don’t put it on the floor or a chair.
  3. If you placed it inside a bad, make sure you don’t put the bad on the floor or chair.
  4. Do not bring it inside restrooms, unless if its worn as an amulet.
  5. Do not sit on it.
  6. Do not lie on it.
  7. Do not put things on top of it.
  8. In keeping it, make sure you placed it on a high clean place.
  9. In keeping it, as much as possible put it on a vertical position and not horizontal. If horizontal (again) please make sure you don’t put anything on top of it unless it’s the same sutra.
  10. Take care of it like it’s the most precious book that it is.

In my next posts, I will share with you some of the sutra that I regularly read. Some of them I have written about in the past but it is worth writing about them again.

But for now, remember that while the Vajrapani Ruel(4) or the Surangama Mantra Amulet(3) are powerful amulets, there are other ways of tapping into the energy of the Buddha or a Bodhisattva.

Special Energizing Buddhist, Taoist, Feng Shui Rituals to Bring Wealth, Career, and Personal Success (5): Put Sacred Objects or Images in Your Home and Workplace

Published Disyembre 8, 2012 by jptan2012

The simple act of inviting a Buddha, Bodhisattva, Goddess, Deity, Immortal or a Saint in your home or workplace will shower upon you wonderful blessings of peace, luck and protection. Having a Sacred Image can immediately transform negative energy into positive ones, and if the energy is all positive, it can ensure that the energy stays positive.

Sun Wukong aka Monkey God aka Pilgrim aka 'Great Sage, Equal to Heaven' is a very powerful wealth and protector god. He is one of the few deities worshipped both in Taoism (also spelled as Daoism) and Buddhism.

Avalokitesvara or Kuan Yin is known as Cannon in Japan. Notice that even though the image looks feminine, the breast is exposed and its flat signifying a breast of a man. This is to signify that Kuan Yin has no gender.

Constantly seeing the images of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Deities, Immortals, or Saints will also subconsciously connect us to higher form of consciousness.

While I prefer actual images of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, etc. Other sacred objects like Prayer Wheels, Stupas, or the Koran for Muslims or the Bible for Christians will also do.

A table top prayer wheel.

An indoor stupa is only effective if it either has a relic or a sutra or mantra inside it. A real relic is very rare though.
