Bodhisattva Wishfulling and Master Protection Amulet Pendant (1): Getting Acquainted with LAMA ATISHA AMULET!

LAMA ATISHA AMULETThe LAMA ATISHA AMULET is said to be one of the most powerful protection amulet in Buddhism. According to Lama Zopa Rinpoche, simply seeing or touching a copy of the said amulet will bring a person tremendous protection against physical harm.

It functions like that of the scapular for Catholics. If a person has this on his body at that time of his or her death, it is guaranteed that he or she will have a good rebirth and will be saved from the lower realms. If displayed inside the house or office, one will be saved from bad influences of other people and it will help create harmony. It is also very good to have this amulet if one is in the hospital, to protect a person from the yin chi of the hospital, and it will also prevent you from getting the attention of the lost souls. Thus, it is also a very good amulet to have to wear when one is going to a funeral or cemetery.

I don’t have a personal story or story that I heard first hand about the LAMA ATISHA PROTECTION AMULET, but one of the most popular story associated by the LAMA ATISHA PROTECTION AMULET, and is widely accepted by the different Buddhist traditions is a story that happened fairly recently. It was suppose to have happened to a young Tibetan man and his family.

As you all know, China has invaded Tibet and a lot of people they are either doing some ethnic cleansing or is slowly erasing the cultures and traditions of the Tibetan who are still in Tibet. The man’s name is Tenzin Choejor ( the truth is Tenzin is a fairly common Tibetan boy’s name because it means ‘holder of Buddhist doctrines’, and the current Dalai Lama’s name himself is Tenzin. I was told that Choezor is not a family name but it is a second name, which means Dharma Wealth. From the name of the man, it can be concluded that his parents are devout Buddhist, but this is not unique because most Tibetans are devout Buddhist.)

Tenzin Choejor’s family is one of the many Tibetans who’ve experienced oppression in Tibet. He was born after the 14th Dalai Lama has fled to Tibet to escape the Chinese oppression, so it can be said that he has never experienced true freedom. He has always long for to escape the Chinese oppression of Tibet but has not dared to do it because all his family are in Tibet. However, his perspective changed when he got married and started to have his own family.

It is said that Tenzin Choejor has planned to escape with his parents, but in a country ruled by oppression and where paranoia is really high, the government soon found out about his plan to escape. It is said that it was possible that another relative or a friend squealed on him. Like most Tibetans who plan to escape or oppose the Chinese government, he was tortured and separated from his family and was put to hard labor for several years. Upon his release, he find it hard to start a new life, because he was considered as an ‘ex-convict’ and even fellow Tibetans who took pity on him will not hire him because they’re afraid that they might earn the ire of the Chinese government. This is when he realized and decided that the only way for him to survive and take care of his family is if they escape Tibet. This time, however, Tenzin Choejor is more careful and he only confided to his father, who told him to ask for the blessing of his grandfather, his father’s uncle, for a blessing because it will be a long journey, a very difficult one, and if caught they might be killed on the spot or if they’re not caught they might die of freezing in the mountains. His father also cautioned him to think again of his plans because Tenzin Choejor’s children then aged 10 and 7 might not survive the trip. However, Tenzin Choejor knew that’s the only way for them to have a better life, and he thought it is better to risk their lives that forever live under the Chinese oppression.

Tenzin Choejor great uncle is one of the few monks left in Tibet who has personally met the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, and because he is monk in a place under Chinese rule, it is expected that he is very poor. So he has nothing to offer Tenzin Choejor but the blessing that Tenzin Choejor seeks from him. He performed some Buddhist protection ritual, which was improvised to adjust to their situation, but then took Tenzin Choejor aside to tell him that there is one thing that he would like to give Tenzin Choejor.

He told Tenzin Choejor that he believe that the only reason he was able to escape the Chinese’s physical oppression, unlike most monks, is because of an amulet that he has kept for a long time. He told Tenzin Choejor that he believes that the amulet is one of the reasons that he remained alive under the hands of the Chinese communist government. He then gave Tenzin Choejor a leather cloth where the image of LAMA ATISHA PROTECTION AMULET is printed. He told Tenzin Choejor that the amulet would keep his family safe. It is said that Tenzin Choejor initially refused to accept the amulet, but his great uncle insisted and told him that he has no need for the amulet because of his old age and that he is ready to part with his body.

Tenzin Choejor then proceeded to escape Tibet. It must be noted that after the initial exodus of Tibetans from Tibet, the Chinese communist government has intensified border security, making it harder for all Tibetan planning to go to exile to leave Tibet. There is no exact statistics as to how many people have been killed or captured and tortured just because the seek a better life. Tenzin Choejor armed with determination and faith in his ‘religion’ decided to set out on an escape with his wife and two young children.

On his way to India, Tenzin Choejor encountered several problems, but somehow they manage to get away with it. Among these two things are an encounter with a Chinese soldiers and a fight against nature.

First, on their escape, they literally came across some Chinese soldiers, and because of fatigue and coldness because of the freezing snow, he and his wife noticed them a little too late. They came across two drunken Chinese soldiers, and was almost apprehended, in fact, a gun was already pointed at them. Should the soldiers decided to shoot at them, the soldiers won’t get reprimanded because there is a standing order to shoot to kill all people who are trying to escape. Fearing for the life of his family, Tenzin Choejor used his body to block his wife and kids, and instinctively touched the LAMA ATISHA PROTECTION AMULET given to him by his great uncle and started to call on the Buddhas. According to their testimony, Tenzin Choejor’s wife didn’t know where he mustered her courage to talk to the soldiers.

Tenzin Choejor’s wife knows how to speak Chinese, being born and raised under the Chinese communist government; Chinese has been her second language. Tenzin Choejor knows the language also but because he grew up in the countryside he understands it better than he can speak. His wife on the other hand knows how to speak it but not fluently either. But she managed to address the soldiers and pretend that she is Chinese, and when asked why Tenzin Choejor’s himself doesn’t speak she told them that her husband is deaf – mute. There are many loopholes to her cover, like how can she explain their looks and what are they doing in the mountain, but because it was dark and maybe because the Chinese soldiers were drunk they let them go. Tenzin Choejor believes that it is because of LAMA ATISHA PROTECTION AMULET.

The second ordeal was when they were in the mountain, Tenzin Choejor’s second child got really ill. Without medicine all Tenzin Choejor and his wife can do are to call on the help of the Buddhas. Tenzin Choejor decided to take off the amulet and placed it on top of his son’s body. Needless to say, the son got healed.

After weeks of travelling in the mountain they finally got to the border of Tibet and India, where they plan to go in exile and seeks the Dalai Lama’s protection. But little did they know that India besieged by thousands and thousand of Tibetan exiles and without a place to put them has made it harder for Tibetans to go inside their country. Though they don’t understand each other, Tenzin Choejor understands the problem with their facial and body language. He started to touch the amulet again and hope for the best. Soon they were met by a Tibetan who took their story. Three days after they were put on a holding area, luckily with food, they were told that they could stay in India.

According to Tenzin Choejor, and these were acknowledge by the highest ranking lamas, it was because of the LAMA ATISHA PROTECTION AMULET that Tenzin Choejor and his family survived the ordeal.LAMA ATISHA AMULET 2

But who is LAMA ATISHA?

For that allow me to share his story using Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s own words. The following was lifted from the archive of FPMT.

Having a little bit of understanding of the life story of Atisha is very beneficial for our mind, so we can try to understand the teaching he wrote. By understanding Atisha’s life story and how he practiced Dharma and achieved realizations, devotion arises and we can feel that his teaching is most precious and pure. 1

Actually it is a very long life story, and it is divided into three parts. In order to have some idea about the great bodhisattva Atisha and how he benefited sentient beings, there are stories about his birth, his home, his birthplace and his early life. The stories explain how he achieved great knowledge and realizations with that holy body. Then after achieving the knowledge and realizations of the path, he benefited the teachings and helped sentient beings— he led the disciples and sentient beings to happiness.

Atisha’s birthplace was in Bengal, India. He was born as a prince and his family was extremely wealthy. He was surrounded by servants and workers, and there were 100,000 people just in his palace. The palace had thirteen golden roofs and 25,000 golden banners on the top, and there were also many pools, like in the West. At the palace there were 25,000 pools and beautiful parks, gardens of beautiful flowers that people could enjoy, seven bridges, and special trees that only grow in India.

When Atisha was three, he became an expert in general education—in astrology, letters, the brahmas, these things. He also became expert in discriminating the inner and outer being, so his parents wanted him very badly to take the place of the king. They tried very hard, but after some time he left with 300 horses, disguised as an army going to fight.

Many people went into the forest with Atisha to seek the guru. He took many teachings on refuge and bodhicitta, and then the guru sent him home to check up and try to understand the suffering of life. This happened three times. He came back, the guru sent him to another guru, and that guru sent him home to check up on the shortcomings of worldly life. His parents tried very hard to have him marry and take the place of a king. They invited all the beautiful women of the country to a party, and let them all dance around, but it didn’t work.

Atisha explained, “ There is no difference for my mind between this palace and a prison. There is no difference between beautiful, expensive clothes and the torn cloth in the garbage. There is no difference between delicious food and dog meat and pus. There is no difference between princesses and mara women—devil women.” Why devil women? Because they transform into beautiful bodies and cheat us. His parents listened to him.

Atisha followed 157 gurus perfectly and received many teachings, initiations and Vajrayana teachings. Once, while he was at home, Tara, the female aspect of Buddha, instructed him in a dream not to be attached to the samsaric happiness of worldly life. After this, Atisha went to see his guru. Then one day, after receiving many initiations, he thought, “There is no Vajrayana teaching left that I don’t know. I have become the most learned.” He felt a little bit of pride. That night, he had a dream that many female dakinis— transformations of buddhas who have high realizations of tantra—showed him many Vajrayana texts that he had never seen before. This made him lose his feelings of pride.

Atisha wanted to receive Mahamudra realization in his lifetime, by living in Vajrayana conduct. One of his gurus, Rahula, suddenly realized with his psychic power that Atisha was thinking this. Without any resistance, Rahula appeared in front of Atisha and instructed him, “What are you doing, forgetting all the sentient beings by leaving them? Take ordination and do great work for the teachings. This will be greatly beneficial for the teachings.” So, Atisha took ordination when he was twenty-nine years old. He was persuaded to do so by his guru and also by the buddha’s female aspect, Tara, Guru Shakyamuni Buddha, Maitreya Buddha and many other buddhas and Vajrayana deities such as Heruka, in his dreams.

After some time, when he was going around the Bodhgaya stupa—the temple in India, the most holy place where Guru Shakyamuni Buddha received enlightenment— above the stupa, in space, he saw the transformation of a young woman asking an old woman a question. At that time Atisha was concerned with quickly receiving enlightenment, and in space the young woman was asking the old woman, “What path should we practice in order to quickly receive enlightenment?” The old woman said, “Train the mind in love and compassion, in bodhicitta.”

Again, when Atisha was going around the stupa, there were paintings on the walls that talked to each other. One painting asked the other what path we should follow to reach enlightenment quickly, and the other answered, “Train the mind in love and compassion, and bodhicitta.”

Again, when Atisha was going around near Nagarjuna’s caves, he saw the statues of Buddha communicating, saying, “Train the mind in love and the compassionate thought, bodhicitta.” There was one ivory statue, and it said, “Yogi, if you want to quickly receive enlightenment, train the mind in love and compassion, and the thought of bodhicitta.” Many statues spoke like this.

Atisha went to see Guru Serlingpa, and he spent about twelve years taking the complete teachings on bodhicitta. In the presence of Guru Serlingpa, he received the actual realization of bodhicitta. Then Lama Serlingpa predicted that he should go to Tibet, the northern snow land.

At that time, there was a lot of degeneration of the teachings in Tibet. The people did not know how to practice the teachings, and they were confused about the practice of sutra and tantra together. The king of Tibet, Lha Lama Yeshe Ö, sent twenty-one boys to India to study Dharma and all of them except two died from the heat. These two came back to Tibet and told the king that everyone was talking about Atisha, the pandit, and that they should invite him to Tibet to help. These two translators’ names were Rinchen Sangpo and Legshey.

As soon as Lha Lama Yeshe Ö, the king of Tibet, heard the name of Atisha, incredible devotion arose in his mind, and he decided to invite Atisha to Tibet. He sent many gold offerings to India to invite Atisha, but it didn’t work. Then afterwards, he went himself to find gold for Atisha, and he was captured and put in the prison by an irreligious king who didn’t want the spread of Dharma in Tibet.

King Lha Lama Yeshe Ö’s nephew, Jangchub Ö, came to see him in prison. The irreligious king told Jangchub Ö, “I won’t free your uncle until you find gold the size of his body.” So, Jangchub Ö found enough gold to reach up to his neck, but still the irreligious king was not satisfied. He said, “If you don’t bring gold the size of his head, I won’t let him be free from prison.” Again, Jangchub Ö went to his uncle, the king of Tibet, and explained all these things.

The imprisoned king of Tibet, Lha Lama Yeshe Ö, explained to his nephew that since a lot of gold was offered to the irreligious king and he was still not satisfied, Jangchub Ö should not offer this king even one handful of gold. King Lha Lama Yeshe Ö said he was now very old and did not have long to live, and it would be more beneficial for his nephew, Jangchub Ö, to take the gold. He said to Jangchub Ö, “I don’t care if I die in prison. Take all this gold and ask Atisha to come to Tibet and spread the Dharma.” Then the king sent a message to Atisha through his nephew, saying, “I gave up my life to invite you to Tibet. Please guide me with your compassion. What I have in my mind is only for you to come to Tibet and spread the teachings.”

The imprisoned king sent the message with Jangchub Ö with a suffering, frantic voice, and then he passed away in prison. His nephew sent a translator with many gold offerings to invite Atisha, but the kings and abbots of India wanted Atisha to stay there. Finally, Atisha received permission and he came secretly to Tibet and helped spread the Dharma there. According to his teachings, he wrote the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment there.

Atisha spread the pure Mahayana teaching like the rising sun, and all conflict, ignorance, and wrong conceptions were destroyed. His text was translated into English by some Tibetan lamas and other translators. I am reading the translation of this teaching because it is extremely beneficial. It is so short. Atisha did great work and brought so much benefit to India and Tibet. In India he destroyed many followers of other religions, wrong paths and wrong conceptions. He did great work.

These days, many young people from the West have the chance to hear the teachings and to understand and practice these meditations on the gradual path to enlightenment. They can find satisfaction in their lives, and they can make their lives meaningful and happy. They integrate it in their own mind, and they understand that there is a chance to make their lives meaningful. All these things are due to the kindness of Atisha, the great bodhisattva.

This great bodhisattva, Atisha, lived in discipline, and had the realization of moral conduct. He kept the 253 precepts purely, and on the basis of that, the bodhisattva’s precepts, the moral conduct precepts and the Vajrayana precepts. He had unshakeable, firm, one-pointed concentration that could last for years—even if hundreds of rockets were flying nearby they couldn’t disturb or shake his meditation. He had perfect realization of shunyata, the absolute nature, and he achieved high tantric realizations, seeing himself in the form of deities.

Atisha had high tantric realization without projections, and he did not see ordinary places—we see an ordinary house built of mud or cement, an impure place, but Atisha had only pure projections and pure view, and he always saw the view of the mandala of the deities. He had high Vajrayana realizations and he was able to transform even kaka into nectar and poison into medicine.

We can meditate like this to increase devotion to Atisha’s teachings. We can do checking meditation according to that. We may find it difficult at the beginning of the subject, and it may take time to understand, but by checking and understanding more and more the various meditations and teachings, gradually it will become clear within our mind.

Important Things To Know About the Hungry Ghost Month!

Since this may be the last time I’m writing about the Hungry Ghost Month on this blog, I thought I’ll put some of the highlights that all of you have to remember.

  1. Hungry Ghost Month happens every 7th Lunar Month of the year.
  2. During this time, the gates of hell are opened to let the hungry ghosts in hell roam and have their food.
  3. Remember, that hungry ghosts are sometimes in this world and not in hell. The said hungry ghosts who lives amongst us are strengthen.
  4. During this time, yin energy or negative chi (energy) is pervasive.
  5. It is not good for you to move to a new house, new office, new work during this time.
  6. It is advisable not to go to any yin places during the hungry ghost month. Yin places are cemetery, funeral, and hospitals.
  7. Do not undergo any medical procedures during this time.
  8. It is highly advisable to put some food outside of your house so that the hungry ghost will not go inside your house to look for food.
  9. Make sure to make offerings to your dead relatives.
  10. Do not go out in the evening.
  11. Do not travel.
  12. Do not pick up a coin on the street.
  13. Do not look if you hear somebody calling you ‘psst…’ or if the voice calling you is unfamiliar.
  14. Do not goof around so much in the evening.
  15. Do not tap anybody on the shoulder.
  16. Remember that even if you have the good stars of the flying stars this could be tempered or ruined by the pervading yin chi of the month.
  17. If you have negative stars this will definitely be aggravated by the pervasive yin energy of the hungry ghost month.
  18. Remember negative effects of Feng Shui blunders such as poison arrows, having sa septic tank inside or in front of your house, crossing or walking under the stairs, etc., are doubled, tripled, or greatly heightened this time.
  19. Do not sign any contract during this time.
  20. Avoid partying in your house.
  21. Avoid leaving food in your room, specially left over food.
  22. If you feel a presence, a negative energy or chi, ignore them. Do not attempt to cleanse them or get rid of them if you are not familiar how to do it properly. You might attract more and encourage them to stay.
  23. When inside the movie house or theater avoid seating of the front row. It is said that the spirits are attracted to the yang energy of a play, concert, movie and will stay on the front row.
  24. Do not leave your clothes outside of your house in the evening. Especially clothes of baby or young children. The spirit might attached themselves to it.
  25. Make sure you cover the eyes of dolls, human figurines, the hungry ghost might possess them.
  26. Don’t drive too fast. Be very conscious. If you hit something or somebody, make sure first that you did hit a living thing. This might be a ploy of a spirit to ‘hitch’ a ride and attach itself to your car or to you.
  27. Do not look into a body of water in the evening.
  28. Do not go swimming.
  29. Do not spit on the street or on random places. You shouldn’t be doing this anyway whether it is hungry ghost month or not.
  30. Most importantly if this is preceded by an eclipse whether lunar eclipse or solar eclipse know that it is an ill omen about the coming hungry ghost month.

As such, it is highly advisable that one remains protected during this time.

The best protections are the following: Chung Kwei pendant made of real / genuine black tourmaline or onyx or obsidian or black jade or gold; Vajrapani Ruel with gold Kalachakra pendant; gold Bodhisattva Sangharama pendant (also known as Kuan Kong, Guan Gong, Kuan Te Yah, Guan Te Yah, Guan Yu, Guan Yu, Qie Lan Pu Sa).

For those who are haunted it is also very good to have a SPECIAL GOLD PIYAO with the Chung Kwei or Vajrapani Ruel and Surangama Mantra Amulet.

There is no exact statistics as to how many people have been killed or captured and tortured just because the seek a better life. Tenzin Choejor armed with determination and faith in his ‘religion’ decided to set out on an escape with his wife and two young children.

On his way to India, Tenzin Choejor encountered several problems, but somehow they manage to get away with it. Among these two things are an encounter with a Chinese soldiers and a fight against nature.

First, on their escape, they literally came across some Chinese soldiers, and because of fatigue and coldness because of the freezing snow, he and his wife noticed them a little too late. They came across two drunken Chinese soldiers, and was almost apprehended, in fact, a gun was already pointed at them. Should the soldiers decided to shoot at them, the soldiers won’t get reprimanded because there is a standing order to shoot to kill all people who are trying to escape. Fearing for the life of his family, Tenzin Choejor used his body to block his wife and kids, and instinctively touched the LAMA ATISHA PROTECTION AMULET given to him by his great uncle and started to call on the Buddhas. According to their testimony, Tenzin Choejor’s wife didn’t know where he mustered her courage to talk to the soldiers.

Tenzin Choejor’s wife knows how to speak Chinese, being born and raised under the Chinese communist government; Chinese has been her second language. Tenzin Choejor knows the language also but because he grew up in the countryside he understands it better than he can speak. His wife on the other hand knows how to speak it but not fluently either. But she managed to address the soldiers and pretend that she is Chinese, and when asked why Tenzin Choejor’s himself doesn’t speak she told them that her husband is deaf – mute. There are many loopholes to her cover, like how can she explain their looks and what are they doing in the mountain, but because it was dark and maybe because the Chinese soldiers were drunk they let them go. Tenzin Choejor believes that it is because of LAMA ATISHA PROTECTION AMULET.

The second ordeal was when they were in the mountain, Tenzin Choejor’s second child got really ill. Without medicine all Tenzin Choejor and his wife can do are to call on the help of the Buddhas. Tenzin Choejor decided to take off the amulet and placed it on top of his son’s body. Needless to say, the son got healed.

After weeks of travelling in the mountain they finally got to the border of Tibet and India, where they plan to go in exile and seeks the Dalai Lama’s protection. But little did they know that India besieged by thousands and thousand of Tibetan exiles and without a place to put them has made it harder for Tibetans to go inside their country. Though they don’t understand each other, Tenzin Choejor understands the problem with their facial and body language. He started to touch the amulet again and hope for the best. Soon they were met by a Tibetan who took their story. Three days after they were put on a holding area, luckily with food, they were told that they could stay in India.

According to Tenzin Choejor, and these were acknowledge by the highest ranking lamas, it was because of the LAMA ATISHA PROTECTION AMULET that Tenzin Choejor and his family survived the ordeal.

But who is LAMA ATISHA?

For that allow me to share his story using Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s own words. The following was lifted from the archive of FPMT.

Having a little bit of understanding of the life story of Atisha is very beneficial for our mind, so we can try to understand the teaching he wrote. By understanding Atisha’s life story and how he practiced Dharma and achieved realizations, devotion arises and we can feel that his teaching is most precious and pure. 1

Actually it is a very long life story, and it is divided into three parts. In order to have some idea about the great bodhisattva Atisha and how he benefited sentient beings, there are stories about his birth, his home, his birthplace and his early life. The stories explain how he achieved great knowledge and realizations with that holy body. Then after achieving the knowledge and realizations of the path, he benefited the teachings and helped sentient beings— he led the disciples and sentient beings to happiness.

Atisha’s birthplace was in Bengal, India. He was born as a prince and his family was extremely wealthy. He was surrounded by servants and workers, and there were 100,000 people just in his palace. The palace had thirteen golden roofs and 25,000 golden banners on the top, and there were also many pools, like in the West. At the palace there were 25,000 pools and beautiful parks, gardens of beautiful flowers that people could enjoy, seven bridges, and special trees that only grow in India.

When Atisha was three, he became an expert in general education—in astrology, letters, the brahmas, these things. He also became expert in discriminating the inner and outer being, so his parents wanted him very badly to take the place of the king. They tried very hard, but after some time he left with 300 horses, disguised as an army going to fight.

Many people went into the forest with Atisha to seek the guru. He took many teachings on refuge and bodhicitta, and then the guru sent him home to check up and try to understand the suffering of life. This happened three times. He came back, the guru sent him to another guru, and that guru sent him home to check up on the shortcomings of worldly life. His parents tried very hard to have him marry and take the place of a king. They invited all the beautiful women of the country to a party, and let them all dance around, but it didn’t work.

Atisha explained, “ There is no difference for my mind between this palace and a prison. There is no difference between beautiful, expensive clothes and the torn cloth in the garbage. There is no difference between delicious food and dog meat and pus. There is no difference between princesses and mara women—devil women.” Why devil women? Because they transform into beautiful bodies and cheat us. His parents listened to him.

Atisha followed 157 gurus perfectly and received many teachings, initiations and Vajrayana teachings. Once, while he was at home, Tara, the female aspect of Buddha, instructed him in a dream not to be attached to the samsaric happiness of worldly life. After this, Atisha went to see his guru. Then one day, after receiving many initiations, he thought, “There is no Vajrayana teaching left that I don’t know. I have become the most learned.” He felt a little bit of pride. That night, he had a dream that many female dakinis— transformations of buddhas who have high realizations of tantra—showed him many Vajrayana texts that he had never seen before. This made him lose his feelings of pride.

Atisha wanted to receive Mahamudra realization in his lifetime, by living in Vajrayana conduct. One of his gurus, Rahula, suddenly realized with his psychic power that Atisha was thinking this. Without any resistance, Rahula appeared in front of Atisha and instructed him, “What are you doing, forgetting all the sentient beings by leaving them? Take ordination and do great work for the teachings. This will be greatly beneficial for the teachings.” So, Atisha took ordination when he was twenty-nine years old. He was persuaded to do so by his guru and also by the buddha’s female aspect, Tara, Guru Shakyamuni Buddha, Maitreya Buddha and many other buddhas and Vajrayana deities such as Heruka, in his dreams.

After some time, when he was going around the Bodhgaya stupa—the temple in India, the most holy place where Guru Shakyamuni Buddha received enlightenment— above the stupa, in space, he saw the transformation of a young woman asking an old woman a question. At that time Atisha was concerned with quickly receiving enlightenment, and in space the young woman was asking the old woman, “What path should we practice in order to quickly receive enlightenment?” The old woman said, “Train the mind in love and compassion, in bodhicitta.”

Again, when Atisha was going around the stupa, there were paintings on the walls that talked to each other. One painting asked the other what path we should follow to reach enlightenment quickly, and the other answered, “Train the mind in love and compassion, and bodhicitta.”

Again, when Atisha was going around near Nagarjuna’s caves, he saw the statues of Buddha communicating, saying, “Train the mind in love and the compassionate thought, bodhicitta.” There was one ivory statue, and it said, “Yogi, if you want to quickly receive enlightenment, train the mind in love and compassion, and the thought of bodhicitta.” Many statues spoke like this.

Atisha went to see Guru Serlingpa, and he spent about twelve years taking the complete teachings on bodhicitta. In the presence of Guru Serlingpa, he received the actual realization of bodhicitta. Then Lama Serlingpa predicted that he should go to Tibet, the northern snow land.

At that time, there was a lot of degeneration of the teachings in Tibet. The people did not know how to practice the teachings, and they were confused about the practice of sutra and tantra together. The king of Tibet, Lha Lama Yeshe Ö, sent twenty-one boys to India to study Dharma and all of them except two died from the heat. These two came back to Tibet and told the king that everyone was talking about Atisha, the pandit, and that they should invite him to Tibet to help. These two translators’ names were Rinchen Sangpo and Legshey.

As soon as Lha Lama Yeshe Ö, the king of Tibet, heard the name of Atisha, incredible devotion arose in his mind, and he decided to invite Atisha to Tibet. He sent many gold offerings to India to invite Atisha, but it didn’t work. Then afterwards, he went himself to find gold for Atisha, and he was captured and put in the prison by an irreligious king who didn’t want the spread of Dharma in Tibet.

King Lha Lama Yeshe Ö’s nephew, Jangchub Ö, came to see him in prison. The irreligious king told Jangchub Ö, “I won’t free your uncle until you find gold the size of his body.” So, Jangchub Ö found enough gold to reach up to his neck, but still the irreligious king was not satisfied. He said, “If you don’t bring gold the size of his head, I won’t let him be free from prison.” Again, Jangchub Ö went to his uncle, the king of Tibet, and explained all these things.

The imprisoned king of Tibet, Lha Lama Yeshe Ö, explained to his nephew that since a lot of gold was offered to the irreligious king and he was still not satisfied, Jangchub Ö should not offer this king even one handful of gold. King Lha Lama Yeshe Ö said he was now very old and did not have long to live, and it would be more beneficial for his nephew, Jangchub Ö, to take the gold. He said to Jangchub Ö, “I don’t care if I die in prison. Take all this gold and ask Atisha to come to Tibet and spread the Dharma.” Then the king sent a message to Atisha through his nephew, saying, “I gave up my life to invite you to Tibet. Please guide me with your compassion. What I have in my mind is only for you to come to Tibet and spread the teachings.”

The imprisoned king sent the message with Jangchub Ö with a suffering, frantic voice, and then he passed away in prison. His nephew sent a translator with many gold offerings to invite Atisha, but the kings and abbots of India wanted Atisha to stay there. Finally, Atisha received permission and he came secretly to Tibet and helped spread the Dharma there. According to his teachings, he wrote the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment there.

Atisha spread the pure Mahayana teaching like the rising sun, and all conflict, ignorance, and wrong conceptions were destroyed. His text was translated into English by some Tibetan lamas and other translators. I am reading the translation of this teaching because it is extremely beneficial. It is so short. Atisha did great work and brought so much benefit to India and Tibet. In India he destroyed many followers of other religions, wrong paths and wrong conceptions. He did great work.

These days, many young people from the West have the chance to hear the teachings and to understand and practice these meditations on the gradual path to enlightenment. They can find satisfaction in their lives, and they can make their lives meaningful and happy. They integrate it in their own mind, and they understand that there is a chance to make their lives meaningful. All these things are due to the kindness of Atisha, the great bodhisattva.

This great bodhisattva, Atisha, lived in discipline, and had the realization of moral conduct. He kept the 253 precepts purely, and on the basis of that, the bodhisattva’s precepts, the moral conduct precepts and the Vajrayana precepts. He had unshakeable, firm, one-pointed concentration that could last for years—even if hundreds of rockets were flying nearby they couldn’t disturb or shake his meditation. He had perfect realization of shunyata, the absolute nature, and he achieved high tantric realizations, seeing himself in the form of deities.

Atisha had high tantric realization without projections, and he did not see ordinary places—we see an ordinary house built of mud or cement, an impure place, but Atisha had only pure projections and pure view, and he always saw the view of the mandala of the deities. He had high Vajrayana realizations and he was able to transform even kaka into nectar and poison into medicine.

We can meditate like this to increase devotion to Atisha’s teachings. We can do checking meditation according to that. We may find it difficult at the beginning of the subject, and it may take time to understand, but by checking and understanding more and more the various meditations and teachings, gradually it will become clear within our mind.

Myth Buster 46: One Should Not Wear Amulets And Feng Shui Charms in a Yin Place Like a Wake, Funeral, or Hospital Because It Will Absorb the Negative Energies!

Recently, one of my readers acquired a Vajrapani Ruel(1), and she and her partner are happy about it because she immediately felt the change in her luck. You see this was an interesting case because she was besieged by negative energies on different fronts. First, the Feng Shui of her place is not very nice, then she seems to be besieged by negative entities as confirmed by Guru Lama and other clairvoyant friends she has. Then she may have been a target of an ‘evil eye’ caused by a jealous ‘friend’. So it was a struggle for her to get the Vajrapani Ruel(2), but when she got it she experienced some immediate noticeable change in her luck.

Then one day she went to a wake of a relative whose death occurred during the Hungry Ghost Month, and she left her Vajrapani Ruel(3), thinking that she shouldn’t bring it because it will cause bad luck. I think she might have gotten this impression because of some Feng Shui consultants who commercially sell some Feng Shui items or charms, and they warn people not to bring their charms and amulets in a wake or funeral or even to the hospital because these items may absorb some negative energy.

As a result, after that she again experienced some bad luck! Why is this, it is because she is dealing with a lot of negative energies, and her Vajrapani Ruel(4) is just starting to work for her and then she went to yin place or yin event without her Vajrapani Ruel(5). It means it has to start cleansing her again from all the negative energies she is dealing with.

But what about the warning of most Feng Shui experts that one should not wear charms or amulets in a wake or funeral or when visiting a sick person in the hospital?

My response to this is…WHAT THEN IS THE USE OF GETTING A PROTECTION WHEN IT CAN’T PROTECT YOU AT A TIME THAT YOU NEED IT MOST?

At the onset of this blog, I already have written and discussed whether we can and whether we should bring our amulets or charms to Yin places such as an hospital, a wake or a funeral, but it is worth writing about it again.

If you take a closer observation, you will notice that the Feng Shui experts who warn against wearing charms and amulets in a yin place or event are mostly commercialized Feng Shui experts. By commercialized I mean somebody who is more focused on selling rather than helping. But it doesn’t mean that all Feng Shui experts who has commercial store act this way, because the world’s most famous Feng Shui consultant doesn’t stop her followers from bringing the amulets or charms into a yin place.

So going back to the ‘teaching’ of some Feng Shui consultants not to bring charms and amulets to a yin place. I have never fully understood the logic of this, because all the more you need to get protected if you are going to a yin place. And so come to think of it there is no logic to this statement or instruction.

When going to the a wake, funeral, hospital or any yin place, all the more you should wear your amulets and charms, because you have to be protected from the negative or yin energies of the place. Not wearing them will deprive you from getting protected thus affect you in a negative way. Amulets like the Vajrapani Ruel(6), Illness Suppression Amulet, Surangama Mantra Amulet, Traditional Sutra Amulet, Kalachakra, Vaisravana – Dzambhala Wealth Amulet, now the Special Gold Piyao, and even the Wish Fulfilling and Buddha’s Blessing Mantra Amulet (this is no longer available) are all self – cleansing and self – energizing amulet. This is especially true for other amulets that have a mantra in it, like those that were released by a famous Feng Shui consultant and expert.

Feng Shui charms and crystals should be cleansed after wearing them in a Yin place. There are crystals that are also self – cleansing and self – energizing, but to take away the confusion, one can simple cleanse these items after visiting a Yin place. You do this simply by putting them on top of a rock salt (or sea salt, pink Himalayan salt, black lava salt) for 7 hours to overnight! That’s it.

So next time you go to a Yin place, please make sure you are protected by wearing your amulets or charms. If you’re Feng Shui consultant or if you’re seller tells you that you can’t wear it in a Yin place, drop them and look for another consultant, or don’t buy the amulet or charm.

Some Basic Questions About the Hungry Ghosts and the Hungry Ghost Month Answered (3): What to Do When a Loved One or A Relative Dies on a Hungry Ghost Month?

Death is always perceived as something negative. But the truth is sometimes death is actually good, because sometimes this means that a person can reincarnate into a better life.

However, if there is a death that one want’s to avoid is death in the evening and death during the Hungry Ghost Month. In this article we will solely talk about death during the Hungry Ghost Month.

First, if you are not familiar with what is Hungry Ghost Month, I suggest you read first the articles with links and titles found below this article.

Hungry Ghost Month is considered one of the worst seasons of the year, with its highlight on the day of the Hungry Ghost Festival, which is on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month. Hungry Ghost Month is the whole of the 7th lunar month. People are warned to take extra care and not take unnecessary trips and activities. One of the most important things that a Chinese takes caution of is going to the hospital or a funeral during this month.

I remember when I was young when a sister of my grandmother is really ill and her family was praying for her early demise out of compassion and pity so that she will not longer suffer. However, she lives on for a few months until during the Hungry Ghost Month there was sign that she was about expire. And so this time her family started praying that she live until after Hungry Ghost Month. This scene might be a little comical but if you are familiar how much negative energies goes around during Hungry Ghost Month you will understand why this is no laughing matter.

Buddhist and Taoist believes that when a person dies during Hungry Ghost Month this is surely a sign that this death was caused by the Hungry Ghost, with the exception of those who passed away between 5AM and 9AM, unless of course the cause of death is something that is tragic or sudden.

It is said that the consciousness (soul) of the newly dead is immediately pulled into the Hungry Ghost realm because there is a very big chance that the person’s dying process was hasten because ‘misery loves company’ and so the destitute Hungry Ghosts will try to pull a sick person’s soul so that they can have a surge of yang energy provided by the dying person.

Also when a death occurs on a Hungry Ghost Month, it usually means there are 2 more following that death, this 2 usually happens within a year of the death of the first one. And more often that not, the first death will also cause tremendous bad luck to the family.

So what to do if somebody dies within the Hungry Ghost Month?

  1. Go to a Buddhist temple and have a special puja done for the person for 49 days.
  2. Go vegetarian for 49 days.

 

If the above remedy is not possible, do the following instead:

  1. Get a Vajrapani Ruel and put it on the body or on the casket of the dead person all throughout the wake.
  2. Better to cremate the body.
  3. After the wake, get the Vajrapani Ruel and set – up a temporary altar for the person, and place a picture there and place the Vajrapani Ruel in front of the picture. Leave it there until the 49th day of the death of the person.
  4. Recite the The-Sutra-On-The-Original-Vows-And-Merits-Of-The-Medicine-Master-Lapis-Lazuli-Light-Tathagata and/or Sutra-of-the-Past-Vows-of-Earth-Store-Bodhisattva once a day for 49 days.
  5. Make offerings (flowers, oil, incense, water, fruits and vegetables, money) to an image of a Buddha or Bodhisattva for 49 days.

Today’s post is about a reader who I secretly named as “Doubtful Chalyn” or “Doubting Chalyn”. Chalyn or Lyn as she is called emailed me sometime late April of this year. According to her she has to email me seven (7) times because I responded to her. I don’t think I saw her first 6 emails but the last one where I replied sounded like she was a little desperate. And so when I replied, I decided to give her my contact number.

Doubtful Chalyn called me up while I was in a meeting and so she got a little disappointed and sent me a message asking as to why I would give her my number, she called 3 times. I returned her call that same evening and explained that during daytime, I’m usually busy and is unable to reply right away to messages and most of the time, I’m unable to take a call.

Anyway, she said she needs my help and insisted that she needs the Vajrapani Ruel. She also clarified that it was both she and her husband who reads my blog, but it was her husband who really wants and is desperate to get the Vajrapani Ruel. During our conversation, she kept on asking me whether the Vajrapani Ruel really works and that whether it will work for her. I already sense at that time that she was a doubtful reader or and believer. And so I told her not to get the Vajrapani Ruel if she is not sure.

I was surprise when she called again the following day and insisted that we meet that day because she and her husband really wants to get the Vajrapani Ruel. We met at a mall and I further asked them about their concerns, Doubting Chalyn has shared it with me already during our conversation but wanted to hear it from her husband and I want to know whether the Vajrapani Ruel is really for them.

Vajrapani Ruel

The Vajrapani Ruel looks simple, maybe even rustic, but this simple amulet is packed with a special talisman paper inside, with various ingredients, which includes Namtso Salt, soil, various herbs and plants, crystal, and a relic from a high lama. It’s important to put the ruel inside a amulet holder or something sturdy as to not ruin it. If the cloth had tear which exposes or spill the ingredients inside, the ruel becomes useless. The Vajrapani Ruel itself is only about 1 to 2 inches and it varies from one ruel to another.

Lyn has gave me the reason why they desire the Vajrapani Ruel and that is because her husband’s business is not doing well and that money has been tight since July of 2016. But it was Ranran, Lyn’s husband, who concretizes everything for me. According to Ranran, his business was largely affected by the steady weakening of the Philippine peso against the US dollar, and because of this a lot of his customers has left him for more affordable, although not necessarily better, alternative supplier. This happened at a really fast rate, and since a lot of his customers are also foreign mid –scale businesses, when they left the country and close shop, his income was greatly affected.

Ranran also said that another reason that he wants to get the Vajrapani Ruel is for Lyn to get her long time wish. Lyn hasn’t mentioned anything about her wish to me during our phone conversation but I learned that day about her estranged relationship with her family because she eloped and married Ranran, a man who is 7 years younger than her, and who used to be her father’s employee. They have been married for more than a decade and not once did she get to her parents and siblings, and it is only a cousin that would tell Lyn of some news about her family. When Lyn’s father passed away 7 years ago, she was not allowed to go to the wake, and was only allowed to attend the funeral provided that she doesn’t join them before and after the main funeral. This obviously has constantly become a pain in the chest for Lyn. Even they had two kids her parents, refused to see the kids. Some of siblings of Lyn but only briefly and they certainly don’t have any kind of relationship with her kids.

Again, during our conversation at the mall, Doubtful Chalyn will always ask me whether the Vajrapani Ruel will work. I again told them not to get it if they are very anxious about the whole thing. It was then that I mentally branded her as “Doubtful Chalyn” or “Doubting Chalyn”. Ranran then explained that they are decided in getting the Vajrapani Ruel and that Lyn is only like that because she was desperate for the Vajrapani Ruel to work for them.

Note: I have since admitted to Lyn that I branded her has “Doubtful Chalyn” or “Doubting Chalyn”. And she and Ranran really laughed about it.

That was 4 months ago, as Lyn’s message indicates. Now allow me to share the miracle base on Lyn’s very own words.

According to Lyn and Ranran, they since had a reunion and getting to know the cousins (of Lyn’s kids) party with Lyn’s family. When they asked what happened why the sudden turn around, as it turn out, Lyn’s youngest sister has been convincing their mom and other siblings to reach out to Lyn and rekindle their family relationship with her.

Going back to their initial reason for getting the Vajrapani Ruel. As mentioned, one of Ranran’s biggest and old times went back to him. Obviously this is a big deal for Ranran because getting the client back is a big financial help and also reputation builder. Things have started to get better. And the inheritance of Lyn is a big help but is simply a bonus to the first two miracles!

Now “Doubtful Chalyn” is now a term of endearment for Lyn, but she is insists it is a name no longer apt for her. She said she is now “Lyn the Believer”.

By the way, she now also chants the mantra of Bodhisattva Vajrapani, OM VAJRAPANI HUM, everyday!

Vajrapani Ruel Stories (9): Two Bags Full of Money Help Solves Family Financial Problem

Allow me to once again share another amazing Vajrapani Ruel story. RM is a former OFW turned seamstress. She’s employed at the clothing company of my friend’s uncle. Her parents were also employed by my friend’s grandparents then by my friend’s uncle, and my friend’s family knows her family quite well.

RM is a single mom of 4 kids. Her husband left them for another woman, because of the financial burden of raising 4 kids without a husband she has to leave the country and work abroad. Her kids were left under the care of her parents.

RM said that her parents helped raised her kids really well. And she never had any problems with her. Her mother also always made sure that her children would grow up understanding as to why she needs to work abroad. However, there’s always one thing that bothered her. She would always send money to her parents, and when her father died several years ago, she would still send money to her mother. But it seems like there was not much improvement to their house, and like most OFW, she would have loved to shower her kids with material things, but it seems they only have the most basic things. And the extras that they have are the ones brought by RM home for them. Since her kids never complained and seems happy with what they have she never really questioned this, but it has always been at the back of her mind. Because she earns a little more than an average OFW.

Soon her mother got sick. This was a painful period for RM because it happened at a time when her youngest child graduated from school. RM would have wanted to worked for a few more years so that she can have their house repaired and give her mother a better life since she has been working hard to raise RM’s kids. Please note that RM’s mother also worked until she reached the mandatory retirement age of 65.

RM had to come home because the prognosis was bad and she was told that her mother might pass away anytime. So she came home and although her mom lived for another 7 months, it was a very stressful time because hospital bills are piling up, her two older children who have work on their own try to help, but its not enough. RM doesn’t have any savings of her own because she would send all her money to her mother who would then budget it for the kids and their house. She can’t help but feel bad and asked how come her mom was not able to save any money.

Between the financial help from her kids, her mother’s pension, and help from my friend’s family, they were able to get over their financial responsibilities in the hospital, until her mom died without regaining consciousness 7 months after. My friend’s family shouldered the funeral.

All throughout, she has this little voice in her that is wondering whatever happened to all her money that she sent back to her mother.

But life is good despite of what she went through and some financial problems. All her children found a job, and RM also decided to go back to work. Her children won’t allow her to go back abroad so she went to work for my friend’s family. All throughout, although she didn’t harbor any anger, she was wondering as to what happened to her money.

Soon another tragedy strikes again. Her third child was held up by armed again on a payday. They wanted to get his money and other valuables; he put on a fight and was shot. He was rushed to the hospital where he was in critical condition for a week. He eventually survived but some of his internal organs were severely damaged. Recovery was a long and arduous process. Again medical bills started piling up. Although my friend’s family helps her, RM knows that she cannot just always ask from them, and the thought of her and her children working just to pay off debts is really depressing for them.

This is when my friend’s mother decided to acquire a Vajrapani Ruel for her. According to RM, a few days after she got the Vajrapani Ruel, she got this urge to clean her room and her cabinet. She now uses her mother’s room. She has done this when her mother passed away and had to move some of her things away, but for some reason she decided to do a general cleaning again.

Inside her cabinet, there seems to be a smaller cabinet or drawer that she hadn’t noticed before. It seems like a secret drawer. She pried it open, and lo and behold, inside it are two big bags full of money with some smaller bags. Some of them are still in dollar!!!BAGS OF MONEY

She now realized where the money she sends her mother went. She kept it for her. It is quite typical for her mom to keep it at home because she is not familiar with how to do bank transactions and is very old school. Why hide the money? Because she would always tell RM also that she is afraid that thief might get into their house, because in their neighborhood there has been a lot of break ins! It’s also possible that it was RM’s father who made the secret cabinet because he used to be a carpenter.

RM totally believes that it was because of the Vajrapani Ruel that led to the discovery of the bags of money. She cried and cried when she found the money, not only because it will solve her financial problem, but also because she was overwhelmed with her mother’s love, because she realized that her mother seldom uses the money that she sent them. Chances are she mostly uses her own salary and that of her husband and eventually their pension to raise RM’s children.

RM said that the Vajrapani Ruel didn’t only gave her money back but it also showed her how much her mother and father loves her and her children.
