Lumad: Understanding the Issue.

Published Agosto 4, 2017 by jptan2012

Although, I have made some political forecast on this blog, this blog has never been political. One of the latest ‘political’ forecast I have written is about the 2016 Philippine presidential elections. Both my forecast regarding the presidential and vice – presidential results both came true. As I have said, those are forecast and although it is about politics, the nature of the post is not political.

Today, however, I’m going to write about something that may be perceived as highly political. I want to write about the plight of the Lumads. If you are a Filipino who have watched or been up to date about the current political situation in the Philippines, you would have heard about the Lumads. In fact, the Lumads has supported President Rodrigo Duterte in the last election. However, recently just before the State of the Nation Address (SONA) one of their leaders has come out and blatantly said that they regret supporting PDuts and that it was a wrong decision fro them to do so. Consistent with the President’s personality, if you criticize him, he will attack you, and so he did and said that he will bomb all the Lumad schools because they are run by NPAs. Since the announcement, the DND Secretary has since announced that no such move will be made.

After the SONA, I have heard of people attacking the Lumads, but upon probing they seem not aware of who the Lumads are and what are their plight. And so I have decided to write about Lumads and their sad plight. Please note that some parts of the post might be perceived as critical or as highly political. The truth is as much as I want to avoid being political there are truths that can’t be avoided and I do have to write about it, these truths, unfortunately, are political in nature.

So here’s a brief on the struggle of the Lumads.

Lumad is a generic term for all Mindanaoan tribes but I think this excluded all Muslim tribes. .

As tribes their ancestral lands have been threatened many times, on different issues, and by different groups.

Their usual struggle are with loggers, big and small scale, mining companies, big and small scale, etc. To put it simply, any group or anybody who threatens their ancestral lands is also a threat to the Lumads. For years they are being driven out of their ancestral lands to the point that they no longer have stability and peace. Different groups now reach out to the tribes – religious groups (Catholic and Protestant), International and Local NGOs. Government agencies are not as aggressive in helping, if not totally not felt.

Education is also a challenge because DepEd does not put up schools in remote communities. They expect the IPs (Indigenous People) to walk kilometers on end, and expect them to blend with non IPs.

Aside from the fact that DepEd’s curriculum is not IP friendly. It does not have special subjects on culture, tradition, and other IP related issues, which are very important to help them maintain their identity and culture.

Being so, different groups, in different areas different groups have opened IP schools, with volunteer teachers being given “allowances” only. Some teachers are really LET passers that doesn’t have the privilege of having backers at the DepEd and are unable to get a job. So instead of working as cashiers, store clerk or house maids, etc, they’d rather teach even if they only go home 1x, 2x a month and receive only allowance.

The curriculum in these schools are more sensitive to IPs. Of course, there’s emphasis on environmental protection like it’s not proper to cut down trees, and one should take care of rivers, seas, and mountains.

There are ares where the oppressors are aggressive. Mining companies that have driven out IPs maintain PAGs or Private Armed Groups which co exist with the local Phil Army. PAGs have high – end ammo, sometimes they are even than what the army carries. Several of my friends has seen some of them carrying AK -47.

In areas of Davao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, mining companies are trying to explore “other” sites, which are ancestral lands of the Lumads. These are also the sites where the oppressors are more aggressive.

Lumads doesn’t have any weapons, unless bolos are counted, but they only use it for their daily life like chopping bamboos.. Lumads are generally peaceful tribes or people. They’re not warriors like the Tausugs. So when threatened, they NEED to look for help. So when they become vulnerable because of a threatening situation, they don’t have much choice but to ACCEPT the help of the NPA. The Lumads also admit that there are a few ‘renegade’ Lumads that are being recruited by the PAGs. Of course, in situations like this, money is involved. These renegade Lumads turn their back on their tribe.

As mentioned Priest and Nuns also help the Lumads. The nuns who sells Turmeric Powder, they usually get it from the Lumad communities.

Of course, each group has it’s own approach. The church usually helps in education, livelihood and spirituality. The NPAs provide protection and security.

At this point I would like to make it clear that there is no way I condole violence and support the ideology of the NPA.

2 years ago, a foreign owned mining company that seems to have ties with a Congressman from Visayasdrove out and burned a community in Surigao which they have been wanting to EXPLORE but the Lumads have tried so hard to protect. Because of this the PAGs killed the executive director and 2 volunteer teachers in Surigao IN FRONT of the whole Lumad community. PAGs with the local Army (of course they denied), gathered the whole community, separated the men, women, children they then slit the throat of the ED, then gun down 2 teachers in full view of the shocked Lumads.

Governor Pimentel (although some say he is also connected with Mining companies) took the thousands of Lumads and housed them for over a year at the provincial sports complex. He challenged the national agencies (NBI, PNP, AFP) to arrest and disarm the PAGs.

The national agencies said, why didn’t the police of the Governor arrest them? But according to the governor the .38 caliber of their police is literally rusty, how can they fight with PAGs with AK47!

Anyway, no apprehension was ever made.

It is sad that lately the Lumads are evacuating the area again because they are being harassed either by PAGs or the Army.

This problem has been existing for quite some time, and it is difficult to put the blame on a single administration. However, it is also clear that mining is one of the main reason of this attrition. But so far, mining continues, despite of the pronouncement that the administration is against it, it does continue to these days. Gina Lopez was supposed to be the hope and savior of the Lumads, but her efforts were put to an end when the Commission on Appointments didn’t approved her, and it is perceived that the president didn’t put pressure on CA to have her approved.

Anyway, so every so often, this is what happens to the Lumads. PAGs will threaten Lumad communities, the church will help, but when violence erupts it really are the NPAs who help them.

The Army is said to hate the IP schools because IP kids become more intelligent and know their right because of the IP schools.

Before I end this post, I would like to state that this is how I understand it, but please feel free to learn more about it by doing your independent research. I would like to stress here, I don’t mean to put what the NPAs are doing in a good light, neither do I support any form of violence, be it from the rebel or from the government. I also don’t support the ideology of the NPAs.

Forecasted Financial Situation Is Already Happening and Some Suggestions On How To Deal With It!

Published Nobyembre 28, 2016 by jptan2012

Late last year when I wrote about my analysis of the Bazi Chart or Paht Chee Chart of 2016 Year of the Fire Monkey, one of the things I wrote is the big possibility of a financial crisis. In that particular article, what will precipitate the said crisis will happen either the first part or the middle part of the year, but that the crisis will start to happen either middle of the year or last part of the year. Last June, US$ 1.00 is approximately around Php 44.00, and now it is (as of writing) Php 49.95, the highest is more than 8 years, and the first time to steadily jump up after more than 10 years. In another post, which I have decided will not be shared again; I also insinuated the cost of this financial crisis, at least, for our country.

If you look at the trend, US $ to Php should have started going down already because of the OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker)remittances, but on the third week of November it still continues to rise. Hopefully, it will still go down on December given that the OFW remittances are coming in, but even if goes down, it seems that it will jump up again coming January. I’m sharing this because we all need to get ready for this. I haven’t checked the bazi chart for the year 2017, and will do so soon and share with you my analysis as soon as possible.

Having said that, I will like to clarify that this is not a political post, and so I refrain from making assumptions as to what is causing the continues decline of the Philippine peso, but this I will say while the middle class to upper class are not yet feeling the effect of this financial crisis, we should not be blind to the ones on the lower income bracket who has taken a hit already.

In the past 3 months, I came across two former VIP bodyguards who is now an Uber driver or applying to be a driver. Their concern is that a lot of foreign investors have left the country or have downsized, and of course, not so many foreign VIPs are in need of bodyguard. Another reader also emailed me. Her son apparently works as a call center agent, but several smaller call center agencies have close shop, they are smaller but each one still have about 300 call center agents, not to mention janitors, guards, and non – call canter agent employees.

I’m sharing this because it is important that each one of us prepare for this financial crisis, if indeed it will become a full-blown crisis and I’m not saying it will. Although, I forecasted it, like the Yolanda forecast, the Nepal earthquake forecast, this is something that I’m not proud of nor I’m happy that my forecast has been vindicated.

I’m sure each one of us can do something. We can start of by supporting the good that our government is doing but we should also rally against the things that we perceived are wrong. When I say rally, I mean we should let our voices be heard in a non – violent and non – confrontational manner. Let’s email the government, let’s share our thoughts, and let us be the change, the improvement that we so desire to see.

And of course, do not forget the power of prayers, of going to church or temple, of lighting candles and incense and dedicating its merits for the financial improvement of the country, let us chant -a – mantra or recite – a sutra.

On a personal level, we should start protecting ourselves. Save up, invest properly, carry a powerful amulet like the Vajrapani Ruel or now the traditional sutra amulet like THE DIAMOND SUTRA and / or THE SUTRA ON THE PAST VOWS OF EARTH STORE BODHISATTVA, these amulets doesn’t become available now for no reason, they always become available at the right time.

The Power of a Prayer Wheel: A Personal Testimony

Published Disyembre 2, 2012 by jptan2012

1prayerhweel2If you are a regular reader of this blog, you’d know by now that I’m a great believer of the PRAYER WHEEL. In fact, I’ve written it a number of times, one of which is entitled – THE POWER OF A PRAYER WHEEL – and another time I shared about its power in a post entitled – A PERSONAL TESTIMONY: TAPPING INTO BUDDHISM, TAOISM, AND FENG SHUI FOR A POSITIVE OUTCOME OF A DELICATE SITUATION.

Today, I would like to once again tell you about a recent miraculous experience that I had about the powers of the Prayer Wheel.

I recently went to Cebu where we’re to have a big event. However, two days before the event we were told by the organizers that we haven’t been granted a permit by the mayor of Cebu City and Mandaue City. We need their permit because we are suppose to bike around both cities.

This created a lot of angry heads because all of us has been unintentionally misled that there’d be no problem in getting the permit. With two days before the event, and it being a Friday afternoon, our event is on a Sunday, everybody was hopeless and not very optimistic that we’ll still be able to get the permit.

Not pushing through with the event is going to be a big disgrace to all the companies involve because we’ve flown in some media from Manila to cover the event, invited all the media in Cebu also to cover the event, and most of all, the foreign principals of the companies involve flown in from their respective countries just to be at the event.

After some bickering and a number of threat to go to court, some of us has convinced the group to let cooler heads prevail and to discuss what we can do. The group agreed that there’s nothing else we can do except to go to the respective LGUs involve and ask for the permit. But then again we came to that decision because there’s really nothing else that we can do, but we also know that we’ve got nothing to lose in trying again. Nobody thought of verbalizing that it’s already a Friday afternoon (2pm).

It was decided that we’d separate ourselves into 2 groups. I together with one of my client will go to the office of the mayor of Cebu City, while my assistant and another group of client will go to the office of the mayor of Mandaue City.

I didn’t put up much hope that we’ll accomplish anything but as mentioned we’ve got nothing to lose. I’m just happy that I’m wearing my WISH FULFILLING AND BUDDHA’S BLESSING MANTRA PENDANT, which has the Victory Banner.

The back side of the WISH FULFILLING AND BUDDHA MANTRA BLESSING PENDANT has the images of the Victory Banner, Lung-Ta or Windhorse, the seed syllable of the Goddess Tara - TAM, and the symbolic script of the MEDICINE BUDDHA MANTRA, WISH FULFILLING MANTRA, and the NEGATIVE KARMA CLEANSING MANTRA.

As mentioned in my previous posts, the VICTORY BANNER or BANNER OF VICTORY is a very good Feng Shui tool of Buddhist origin to help ensure that we will be successful in our endeavors.

However, I also note, that the VICTORY BANNER is not really the charm for getting luck in last minute situations like this. Nevertheless, I’m also fortunate enough to be wearing my PRAYER WHEEL pendant! Prayer Wheel Pendant

So while we were on our way to the office of the mayor of Cebu City, I kept on spinning my PRAYER WHEEL pendant, at the same alternately chanting the mantra(if you want to know more about mantras, do read my post entitled – Mantra: The Instrument to Tap the Power of Symbolic Sound, Script, and Thought) OM MANI PADME HUM and mentally stating the intent, which is to be able to get a permit. My clients were asking me what am I doing, whether I’m trying to invoke some miracle, and all I said is that yes I’m trying to invoke some miracle. They laugh a little but also said that they hope it works.

When we got to Cebu City Hall, we saw the mayor coming out of building. We felt compelled to approach him, thankfully he has very few security and they’re not very tight, and I was able to talk to introduce myself, tell him about our dilemma and that we desperately need a permit. He didn’t really ask for a lot of details but instructed a guy to call up the City Administrator to inform him that he the mayor has given the permit, all he they need to do is to prepare and expedite the paper works!!!

One down! My clients all said that the ‘magic’ seems to be working. We also decided that they will stay and wait for the permit and that I should join the other group who at that time was told that the mayor that they want to see is currently in a meeting and won’t be able to see them until early evening. Before I left, my clients jokingly told me to keep on spinning the pendant and create another magic.

On my way to Mandaue City, I decided to continuously spin my prayer wheel pendant and again I continuously chant the mantra of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, which is OM MANI PADME HUM, and alternately mentally stating the intent.

The biggest image of Kuan Yin in the world is in China.

The biggest image of Kuan Yin in the world is in China. Quan Yin or Kuan Yin is better known as the Bodhisattva of Compassion.

When I got to Mandaue City Hall, I saw the other group still waiting to be escorted inside. At that time, there’s nothing else we can do but except to wait, and from time to time plead that we be allowed to see the mayor. After about 15 minutes after I got there, an elderly woman came out to ask us why do we need to see the mayor or the city administrator. My assistant explained the situation, and why do we need to have the event. She went inside again, telling us to wait while she checks out what she can do. Nobody went to see us again for the next 30 minutes and we were all losing hope, although, I still kept on spinning my prayer wheel. 45 minutes after the lady left us she came out with a piece of paper, and informed us that we have the permit!!!!

Needless to say everybody was happy! The event was very successful, and those who said hurtful things at the heat of the moment started apologizing. Those who were at the receiving end of the hurtful words accepted the apologies and there were two people who requested that I get them a prayer wheel and several of them asked me about the prayer wheel.

My prayer wheel pendant is from Nepal and has been with me for several years now. I’ve been thinking of replacing it for quite some time now because it is no longer in the best condition and the top has started to dislodge. Although, I must say that it is still very powerful and effective. However, on that same trip I went to Shangri-La Mactan, and while I was monkey-ing around with some friends at the beach side I lost balance got dipped in the water while still wearing my prayer wheel pendant. I guess that’s a clear sign that I should get a new prayer wheel…and I will because the Prayer Wheel is one of the most powerful Buddhist tools that can be use as a Feng Shui amulet, available to us!!!
