Anger Doesn’t Create Negative Karma, Anger is Negative Karma!

Recently, a reader who got the Vajrapani Ruel(1) got in touch with me again. I was actually surprised to receive her call because since she got the Vajrapani Ruel(2) she never got in touch with me again, except for one time that she told me that the Vajrapani Ruel(3) is working for her. When I asked for the detail of her story and also if it was possible for her to write about it, she just ignored my messages. I did try to call her back but she didn’t answer my calls neither she answered my messages.

And so, I was surprised that she called me a few days ago (the time of writing is most likely different from the time of posting) to inquire about my welfare. But amidst the hi(s) and hellos I knew that she wanted to talk to me about something. So I told her my observation and said that I feel she wants to talk to me about something but that she may be uncomfortable about it.

Because of that prompting on my part she started to open up, but she has a lot of preamble before she got to the point, and so I had to be patient with her also and I simply had to let her talk.

According to Celia, the Vajrapani Ruel(4) indeed worked for her, and she has now a better life. But somehow, she seems quite unhappy.

Celia, requested for the Vajrapani Ruel(5) because her husband left her, and her in – laws who has never liked her are quite happy about it and they never hid the fact. Their two children also went to live her in – laws while her husband went abroad. Since she has gotten married she has never worked and so she finds it really difficult to start anew.

It was thru her mother who follows and regularly reads my blog that she found out about the Vajrapani Ruel(6). And so she decided to take the risk and invest on the Vajrapani Ruel(7). Celia shares that indeed the Vajrapani Ruel(8) worked for her, and chanting Bodhisattva Vajrapani’s mantra – OM VAJRAPANI HUM – did worked for her. Her children are now back with her, and she now has her own small business. After working for 6 months for a company of a friend, she was given a chance to open her own business and so she claims that it was obviously because of the Vajrapani Ruel(9) that she got all these things in order in such a short time.

However, there is one concern, she feels that her happiness is not complete. She said while she is happy that there is a reversal in her luck, she feels cheated that her ex-husband and his now live – in partner seems to be quite happy and doing well also despite of the things that they did to her. And she wonders why one of her wishes has not come to fruition and that is that her husband will leave his live – in partner.

After listening to him, I asked him whether she sincerely still wants her husband back, she initially said yes, and clarified that for the sake of her kids they have to be whole again. However, after much discussion, it was clear that she just wants her husband back to revalidate herself and to spite the other woman and her in – laws who has always seems to have a strong dislike for her.

She then asked me as to what negative karma she has that she seems unable to forgive her ex-husband and his live – in partner. I don’t have answer to this question, and called up my Guru Lama about this. Guru Lama then clarified, her anger is not creating negative karma, it is her anger that is her negative karma.

Isn’t this true not just for her but for everybody? No amulets can make us happy if we continue to harbor anger, envy, and bitterness in our hearts. Whether these feelings create negative karma or not for us depends on how we act on these emotions. However, it is obvious that these emotions are some sort of negative karma because as long as we harbor them we can never truly be happy. So I suggest that once we have these feelings we must immediately deal with it and expunge it from our life.

Living Near the Police Station Doesn’t Necessarily Mean You’re Safe!

I used to think that living near a police station would make your home a little safer as opposed to those who don’t. Isn’t it wonderful to have the protectors live near you so you can easily get their attention when you need their help.police

However, when I learned Feng Shui, I realized that police stations are actually bad for Feng Shui because of the amount of yin energy that they exude. You see, police stations normally have their own small prisons also where they temporarily put the criminals that they apprehend. Needless to say, and without judgment, the place becomes a hot pot for negative thoughts, feelings, and energies. Even the police themselves, although their job is noble can’t help it but be surrounded with a lot of negative thoughts and energies. These negative thoughts and feelings creates negative chi and regular readers of this blog knows that the chi of a house seeps out and affects the neighboring houses, in a way, they become intertwined. Because of this it is best not to live near a police station or prisons.

The Dreaded Hungry Ghost Month

One of the most famous Chinese festivals, other than Chinese New Year and Moon Cake Festival, is the Hungry Ghost Festival, which also happens to be one of the most dreaded festival and month of the Chinese.

The Hungry Ghost Festival happens on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month, however, unlike the other festivals, like the Chinese New Year wherein the changing of the Flying Stars happens on a specified time and date, the preparation and effect of the Hungry Ghost Month, as the term indicates, lasts for a month. It actually starts on the first day of the 7th lunar month, peaks on the 15th day, which is the Hungry Ghost Festival, and ends on the last day of the 7th lunar month.

Every year, if you follow the Gregorian/Western calendar, the Hungry Ghost Month lands on different dates. Sometimes, it starts in July and ends in August, or starts in August and ends in September. But it always cuts across August of the Gregorian calendar. For this year (2012), the Hungry Ghost Month starts on August 17 and ends on September 15. The peak is on August 30, 2012, which is the date of the Hungry Ghost Festival.

But what is the Hungry Ghost Festival or Hungry Ghost Month?

Hungry Ghost Month is actually simply called Ghost Month (鬼月, Guǐ Yuè) in Chinese, the word Hungry is added in the words Ghost Months to clarify the nature of the ghosts that best characterized this season…they’re HUNGRY!

During this month, it is believed that the King of Hell opens the gate of hell to release and allow the spirits in hell or ghosts to be free and roam our world. It is believed that the hungry ghosts will visit families and other humans, thus it is said that there’d be more paranormal and ghostly manifestation during this month. Furthermore, hungry ghosts will also look for victims that they can bring with them to hell, and thus there’d be more accidents, more than that because of the strong yin and negative energy of this season, business becomes bad and it is highly advisable that one shouldn’t sign any contract, move to a new house, get operated on during the entire Hungry Ghost Month.

Why are they considered hungry?

Buddhism and Taoism both have a slightly different version of the Hungry Ghost. For Buddhism, Hungry Ghost is in one of the Six Realms of Existence, and they are simply a form of existence. However, for Taoism, Hungry Ghosts are (1) spirits of people who have not yet gone through a reincarnation and are largely forgotten by their descendants, (2) spirits of really bad people and they’re currently being punished, (3) spirits of really sad people who died of a violent death or suicide, (4) lost spirits who harbored so much yin energy or yin feelings while they were sill living.

They’re hungry because they are unable to get food from their living love ones because their violent or yin dominant death has blocked their connection with their loved ones, they don’t have any love ones on earth, or simply they have been forgotten. It is said that a deceased love one will have connection with us for a few more years, and depending on how we treat their spirits they may enter the samsara (cycle of life) immediately or go to hell as an hungry ghost. It is also said that ghost still needs sustenance in the other existence, and they get it from us in the form of offerings. These people not receiving any are then thrown into the pit of hell and become hungry ghosts.

Since most of these ghosts lived a negative life or died a violent death, many of them still harbor ill feelings towards their fate, so when they’re released they also try to do us harm. Thus all of us need to be extra careful.

Recognizing the Signs of Depression

As I mentioned in a previous post, I’ve received two ‘suicide email’ in one day, and because of that I’ve decided to ask my clinical counselor friend to share with me some tips on how a person can recognize depression on themselves or a loved one.

Please fine below the things that she shared with me. I’ve decided to simply copy paste it.

PERSISTENT SAD, ANXIOUS, OR ‘EMPTY’ FEELINGS. This symptom looks like a low mood but persists even after time goes by and the cause of the bad mood has cleared up or receded.

What to look for: Blank stares, loss of interest in life, an inability to feel or express happiness or other emotions. Or the person may report just feeling “empty” or “numb.”

What else to know: Often the depressed person isn’t fully aware of this symptom. Try asking, “When’s the last time you were happy?”

FEELINGS OF HOPELESSNESS, WORTHLESSNESS, OR HELPLESSNESS. In an “Eeyore-like” pessimistic way, the depressed person can’t help feeling that everything is wrong and it’s his or her fault (rather than the fault of the situation or the illness itself). It’s a hallmark sign of major depression. In mild depression, the feelings are similar but less extreme.

How to tell: The person seems unable to see any positive flip side to things or light at the end of the tunnel — and feels little sense of control over choices or events. The person talks and acts as if he or she has no options, can’t see a different path, is useless and meaningless. He or she may fixate on past mistakes, ruminating over them and expressing guilt and self blame.

What else to know: Listen for comments like these: “It’s hopeless.” “I can’t do anything about it.” “I have no choice.” “Nobody cares.” “I’m stuck.” “I should have/could have/ if only….”

FREQUENT CRYING EPISODES. The crying may not seem to have a direct or obvious trigger; sobs often come “out of nowhere.” But it’s not normal to cry every day (though the depressed person may not realize this).

What to look for: In between episodes you witness, you may notice red eyes, sniffles, cracking voice, balled-up tissues, and other trails to tears.

What else to know: Not every depressed person cries; in fact, some never do. Research has shown that women are more inclined to this behavior than men. A 2001 University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) study found that crying isn’t related to the severity of depression and that people who cry more may have briefer depressive episodes.

INCREASED AGITATION AND RESTLESSNES. Some people with depression fall on the “hyper” end of a spectrum of behaviors, where others are the opposite (see symptom #5).

What to look for: The person may seem unable to relax, more irritable than usual, quicker to anger, full of restless energy, seldom calm. Look for pacing, lashing out at others, frequent standing up and sitting back down.

What else to know: For the depressed person, everything seems magnified. So small slights or irritations aren’t just pebbles in the psyche, they’re giant boulders that get in the way of ordinary life.

FATIGUE AND DECREASED ENERGY. Typically depressed people who don’t show a lot of agitation and restlessness (symptom #4) experience the flip side of those behaviors — an increased sluggishness and slowness.

What to look for: The person may complain of having no energy, of feeling unproductive, or of “slowing down.” He or she may have quit exercising, seem tired a lot, move more slowly, and have slowed reactions. “To-Do” lists never get finished the way they once did. The person may skip work.

What else to know: Fatigue is a real mind-body problem. Low mood and loss of motivation are partly at work, as well as a physiological depletion of energy — and the two forces keep reinforcing each other.

LOSS OF INTEREST IN ACTIVITIES OR HOBBIES THAT WERE ONCE PLEASURABLE. This is one of the single most telling symptoms of depression.

What to look for: The person no longer takes pleasure in things that once brought enjoyment, whether the lives of children or grandchildren, a hobby or craft, exercise, cooking, book club, watching sports — or anything. The person may begin to decline invitations, refuse to go out, not want to see friends or family.

What else to know: Some depressed people lose interest in sex. For others, sex functions as a kind of escape, used the same way some depressed people turn to alcohol or drugs.

 DIFFICULTY CONCENTRATING, REMEMBERING DETAILS, AND MAKING DECISIONS. “Fuzzy thinking” is often apparent both to the depressed person and his or her family, friends, and colleagues.

How to tell: Various mental slips may become obvious, such as forgetting appointments and errands, making checkbook errors, misplacing objects, forgetting names, avoiding making plans, postponing decisions or deferring them to others. The person may begin writing reminders to himself or herself or take a long time reading (because it’s harder to focus). It may become harder to perform complicated tasks.

What else to know: Cognitive changes associated with depression can look like dementia; in fact, people with dementia are prone to depression, and vice-versa.

 SLEEPING TOO MUCH OR NOT ENOUGH. Disordered sleep and depression are closely related; in some people, depression manifests as insomnia (inability to fall sleep or to stay asleep), while others experience the opposite extreme: All the person feels like doing is sleeping.

What to look for: Regular sleep routines are disrupted; staying up too late or going to bed unusually early; being unable to awaken on time; complaining about a poor night’s sleep; sleeping long hours but fitfully — so the person never feels rested; excessive napping by day.

What else to know: Depression is a leading cause of sleep problems, in part because it interferes with natural biological rhythms.

POOR APPETITE OR OVEREATING. Again, the symptom tends to show up as one extreme or the other: The person loses interest in eating or falls into a pattern of constant, emotionally triggered eating.

What to look for: Missed meals, picking at food (especially if this is a change for the person), lying about food intake; loss of interest even in formerly favorite foods, mindless munching and other mindless eating, throwing up after eating; weight gain or weight loss.

What else to know: Depression is a common cause of the eating disorders anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating. It’s true both that depression can lead to eating disorders and that people with eating disorders can develop depression.

 EXPRESSING THOUGHTS OF DYING OR SUICIDE. Depression is one of the conditions most commonly associated with suicide. It begins to seem like a logical way to end the pain and suffering. As many as 90 percent of those who commit suicide are clinically depressed, have a substance abuse problem, or both, according to the National Institutes of Mental Health. (Many people with depression self-medicate with alcohol, which lowers inhibitions and increases the risk for suicide.)
