Being Surrounded By Divine Beings!

Published Hulyo 2, 2015 by jptan2012

In my previous post – IF IN DANGER CHANT THE NAMES OF BUDDHAS AND BODHISATTVAS FOR PROTECTION, I talked about my experience in Zamboanga that happened several months back.

Today, I would like to explain how does it work. As indicated in the various Buddhist sutras, when we call on the name of the Buddhas and/or Bodhisattvas, we are immediately surrounded by various divine beings, and in effect they represent the Buddhas or Bodhisattvas.

To be specific, the sutra says that if we call on Amitabha Buddha we are immediately surrounded by divine beings that will lend us some protection. Then in the Medicine Buddha sutra it states that when we chant the sutra or call on the Medicine Buddha, 12 Yaksa Generals with its retinue of divine beings will come and surround us. For Bodhisattva Kuan Yin, it’s slightly different. It says that Kuan Yin Bodhisattva herself will come to our aid.

The question then is why can’t they just totally protect us? Taking into consideration, what happened to us in Zamboanga, why do we have to have a minor accident that will cause us a flat tire? Why do car numbers 1- 4 had to be held – up? If the protection is really from the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, why can’t they just totally prevent it?

That is because according to the Buddha’s sutra, the Buddha then said, the bigger force is cause and effect, and He has no way to stop it. They may help lessen it but if something is bound to happen it will happen, but they can help lessen the effect.

For example, if somebody is bound to get sick, they will get sick but the severity will change. If somebody is bound to have an accident they will have an accident but the severity will change. For example, instead of a car accident, they might, depending on their good karma or affinity with the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, accidentally prick themselves with a pin.

So going to our experience that night, we have a collective cause and effect of having come into a bad experience. In hindsight, the universe was simply conspiring for us to experience it that is why our flights were rebooked several times until we arrive on that night. We want to leave early in the day, but circumstances simply prevented us from doing so. Lastly, because of several factors including free will we really had to leave that night, if it weren’t for my chanting, for the Vajrapani Ruel, and definitely for the Christian prayers of some people in the group, we would have certainly met a bigger tragic incident, but the point is we didn’t.
