There is a popular Filipino belief that a maiden who sings while cooking will marry a widow. Is there truth to this?
Well…absolutely no! This idea came about because usually parents or employers don’t like their maids or children singing while cooking because this has the tendency to ‘shower’ some saliva on the food being cook. However, repeated reminder not to sing will be ignored. To scare a maiden who naturally wants to marry a bachelor, the elders or employers will scare them that they will marry a widow. Given that the number of requests for the Wish Fulfilling and Buddha’s Blessing Mantra pendant and the very powerful Vajrapani Ruel are mostly form single ladies who wants to marry, I can see how effective this scare tactic is. And in the olden times here in the Philippines, when you say widow, the picture that comes to mind is an old thin or obese guy with a cane smoking a cigar that may be totally unpleasing to the eyes of a maiden.
