I’m feeling ambivalent towards the impeachment trial of Renato Corona. Naniniwala ako na justice should be served no matter who the are the personalities that are involved. Pero on the other hand, impeaching a Chief Justice, at least for me, might create judicial crisis. Madami na kasi ang hindi naniniwala sa justice system sa bansa, hindi kaya lumala pa ito dahil sa impeachment trial ng Chief Justice.
This is the very first impeachment trial of a chief justice in our country and I hope hindi siya pagmulan ng mas matinding crisis.
I will not pretend that I comprehend everything that has been thrown against Chief Justice Renato Corona, pero to be honest, base sa mga nababasa ko sa dyaryo, napapanood at naririnig sa news sa TV at radyo, there is really grounds to ‘discipline’ the Chief Justice. I’m just not sure whether an impeachment is the right course to do it. Pero, on the other hand, kung hindi impeachment ano? Given that calls for him to resign has not been heeded.
From a perspective of an ordinary citizen, dapat naman sa umpisa’t umpisa pa lang ay hindi na tinanggap ni Renato Corona ang position na pagiging Chief Justice. Considering he was appointed by an outgoing president who belongs to pa party which will be considered as minority in the new administration. Furthermore, the said party’s presidential candidate also didn’t make it as president. Add to the ‘manipulation’ is the fact, that it was one of the most tone downed oath taking. Medyo parang sikreto ang pagkakaganap. Para sa akin lang, kung nag iisip at may delikadesa ang Chief Justice sana doon pa lang eh tinanggihan na niya na ang position na yun.
Pero add to that pa that even before he became Chief Justice ay wala siya ni isang decision that went against GMA. Plus as Chief Justice parang ang dami niyang hinarang na desisyon that will negatively affect the former president’s position or of her ‘people’.
If the question is whether he deserves to be impeach, my answer to that is yes. I’m just saying na sana may ibang paraan pa.
